  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Tiny My son came across this tiny little Mountain Dragon, whilst we were out walking in the Winburndale National Reserve, Sunny Corner, near Bathurst, New South Wales. Thanks to the two Steve’s, I have now found out that this little guy is in fact a Mountain Dragon and not a Gecko! Much Appreciated!! The Mountain Dragon (Rankinia diemensis ) is one of the smallest lizards that bears the name dragon. They grow to around 20cm in length and can be found from the Blue Mountains to Victoria as well as Tasmania. However, they usually blend in so well that they go unnoticed. Mountain Dragons are very similar in appearance to Jacky Lizards. / References advise that a primary difference is the colour of their mouths – Mountain Dragon’s are blue and Jacky Lizards are yellow. Mountain Dragons are oviparous – that is, they lay eggs. The small juveniles – barely 7cm in length – are fond of little black ants.

  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Honey Bees (or honeybees) are a subset of bees, primarily distinguished by the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests out of wax. Honey bees are the only extant members of the tribe Apini, all in the genus Apis. Currently, there are only seven recognized species of honey bee with a total of 44 subspecies (Engel, 1999) though historically, anywhere from six to eleven species have been recognized. Honey bees represent only a small fraction of the approximately 20,000 known species of bees. Some other types of related bees produce and store honey, but only members of the genus Apis are true honey bees. In Australia, Honey bees play an essential role in agriculture, not only producing honey and beeswax but also pollinating a vast number of food crops. Beekeeping is a unique primary industry, depending on native flora for about 80% of its production. Nectar and pollen are produced seasonally and beekeepers must often move their hives large distances to be successful. Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia.

  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Dandelion I could not believe my eyes when I saw this Dandelion, as it was the size of a tennis ball – The largest Dandelion I have ever seen! The name Dandelion is given to species of the genus (Taraxacum), a large genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. Dandelion are a common and extremely hardy plant, found in most temperate zone gardens during the summer months. Dandelions were originally widely distributed throughout Eurasia, but have been inadvertently introduced to North America and Australia, where they have thrived. The dandelion has a bright yellow flower, which gives way in time to a globe of fine filaments that are usually distributed by wind, containing the seeds that help it spread. This is generally known as the “dandelion clock”, and blowing it away is a popular pastime for children. Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia.

  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Pink Rebutia narvaecensis Rebutia is a genus in the family Cactaceae, containing 41 species and are native to Bolivia and Argentina. They are generally small, colorful cacti, globular in form, which freely produce flowers that are relatively large in relation to the body. They have no distinctive ribs, but do have regularly arranged small tubercles. They are considered fairly easy to grow and they may produce large quantities of seeds that germinate freely around the parent plant. • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) Brightly coloured flowering annual that is heat and drought tolerant and thrives in hot, sunny positions and is grown for its ferny grey-green foliage as well as its colourful flowers. They do well in poor well drained soil, and don’t mind the frost. They flower continually for months. Plants can be short-lived but often self-seed. California Poppy is related to the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), but does not contain opiate alkaloids. Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery White Lillies Christmas Lily: tall dark green stems with glossy green foliage topped with one or two large white trumpet-shaped flowers – Heavily scented. In the northern hemisphere these lilies are called ‘Easter Lilies’, whereas in Australia they are produced specifically for the Christmas period. Some Christmas lilies may have red/scarlet lines on the flower – it is more likely these are L. regale, or the Regal Lily. Lilies stand for tenderness or purity, despite the fact they are poisonous. Because of the wide variety of colours and sizes, they suit with most other flowers, and are commonly arranged along with long-stemmed roses as a romantic gift. Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia.

  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Pink Frilly Gladioli Gladiolus (from Latin, the diminutive of gladius, a sword) is a genus of flowering plants in the iris family (Iridaceae). Sometimes called the sword lily, the most widely-used English common name for these plants is simply gladiolus (plural gladioli, gladioluses or sometimes gladiolas). The genus Gladiolus contains about 260 species, of which 250 are native to sub-Saharan Africa, mostly South Africa. About 10 species are native to Eurasia. There are 160 species of Gladiolus endemic in southern Africa and 76 in tropical Africa. The species vary from very small to the spectacular giant flower spikes in commerce. These attractive, perennial herbs are semihardy in temperate climates. They grow from rounded, symmetrical corms, that are enveloped in several layers of brownish, fibrous tunics. Their stems are generally unbranched, producing 1 to 9 narrow, sword-shaped, longitudinal grooved leaves, enclosed in a sheath. The lowest leaf is shortened to a cataphyll. The leaf blades can be plane or cruciform in cross section. Canon PowerShot A650 IS / 12.1MP – 6x Optical Zoom – 4x Digital Zoom
