  • Another Creative Painting, this time of a view of Torbay, Devon. This is by way of a joke, as there are two views in my painting, one of the two lovely ladies, sun-bathing on the beach, and another, of the yachts in their race out at sea. / Torbay owes its fame to Napoleon, as, when he threatened to invade England, and to attack our Navy, which used to anchor off Southampton, the Fleet was moved along the coast to Torbay, which was a suitable safe anchorage, with a muddy bottom, which held anchors securely, and protected from the Westerly gales. Even today, at the first hint of a big storm, the large oil-tankers and container ships move into the Bay, to wait out the storm. After Napoleon’s threat extended into years, some of our Fleet’s officers rented fishermen’s cottages, and brought their wives down to join them. Now, Torquay, which was then a minute fishing village, is the largest concentration of wealth in Devon, with more 5-Star Hotels than any other town in the UK, outside London, and more resident millionaires than any other town outside London.
