  • Metro stop on line one: la Défense – Château de Vincennes. During the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries England exported railways to almost every country in the world, and the convention of running on the left hand track was followed by almost every country. While SNCF adopted this convention the French metro system, however, follows the convention that is applied to its road network: trains on the metro run on the right hand track as can be seen from the rear lights of this train at Bastille.

  • La Colonne de Juillet dominates la Place de la Bastille. It marks the site of the prison known as the Bastille which was stormed by the Mob at 2.30 in the afternoon of 14th July in the year 1789, at the start of the French Revolution. La Colonne is 51m/167ft high and is topped by a graceful figure of Liberty (by Dumont), which was regilded in 1989. It commemorates not the fall of the Bastille but the Republicans killed during the July Revolution of 1830 which overthrew Charles X and brought Louis-Philippe to power. Four Gallic cocks and a lion relief on the base of the column symbolize the free people of France. A spiral staircase (283 steps) inside the column leads to a viewing platform from which there is an impressive view of the new Opéra-Bastille.

  • This grew by the stream where Amos Fortune tanned the hides he sold in the Monadnock region. Amos Fortune was the first freed slave in New England. I lived in the house he built in 1894. The land there was lovely. This was drawn in ink in a sketchbook of smooth parchment paper. A dab of color was added with markers. A spider appears on a lower leaf. A web is near the top.
