  • Bastet Responsible For: Joy, Music, and Dancing! Also Health and Healing. / Bastet ( Bast, Ubasti ) / Egyptian sun, cat and home goddess. As a sun goddess she represents the warm, life giving power of the sun. A goddess of the home, pregnant women and of the domestic cat, although she sometimes took on the war-like aspect of a lioness. She was also associated with ‘Eye of Ra’, as such she was a instrument of the sun god’s vengeance. I had this background painted for a while now but couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with it. I’m glad I was finally inspired to do something with it. Credit The stunning model I used for reference is almudena-stock and can be found here: http://almudena-stock.deviantart.com/

  • For a special friend / Who has walked many lifetimes with me, / And beyond… / One who knew the silent footfall of the cat goddess, / Whose lips have sung to the dark grace of Bast, / Who has danced with Gods and evoked the spirit of Anubis… / And carried their magic through the ages / To a world that has forgotten. / Beneath the crown of divine Mother, / Her beauty is ageless, her wisdom a gift. / Time flows past so slowly, / Yet whether for a day, or a lifetime, / Her memory brings warmth, / And no matter the distance, she always sees - / Beyond this world, beneath your facades - / She knows what is real, and sees who you are. / There is no hiding when her light shines upon you. / Precious sister, you walk in another land, / and so many suns have set, since I felt your smile. / But you are remembered. and today I honour you. / (Happy Birthday Kylee)

  • Bastet had the roles of fertility, protector of children and the protector of all cats. Bastet became so popular that she became a household goddess. Bastet’s counterpart was the goddess Sekhmet who represented the cat goddess’ destructive force. Sekhmet is known as the goddess of war and pestilence. Together, Bastet and Sekhmet represented the balance of the forces of nature in Egypt. Painting in mixed media / 100×42 cm 3rd October 2008 Music -

Every Little Helps! Ancient Egyptian goddess worshipped in the form of a lioness and later a cat. The daughter of Re, the sun god, Bastet was an ancient deity whose ferocious nature was ameliorated after the domestication of the cat around 1500 BC. She was native to Bubastis in the Nile River delta but also had an important cult at Memphis. In the Late and Ptolemaic periods large cemeteries of mummified cats were created at both sites, and thousands of bronze statuettes of the goddess were deposited as votive offerings. Small figures of cats were also worn as amulets. / Bastet encourages us all to cleanse ourselves of anything that no longer supports us in health and happiness. Questions we might like to ask ourselves….Do we need to let go of old negative patterns or beliefs? Are there relationships that we have outgrown? What habits no longer serve us? The list could be endless. What we must remember is that if our lives are unsettling, then we need to take time out for the simpler things in life that help to stabilise us. No.2 in the series – Painted using a new technique and experimenting with recycled materials. / The second in the series….hope you like it? Thanking everyone for their support and interest….Sophie x 27th February 2009

  • Bast (also spelled Ubasti, Baset], and later Bastet) is an ancient solar and war goddess why not listen to music while watching ? / Bast the egypt goddess

  • Bast is the Egyptian goddess with the body of a maiden and the head of a cat. She is the Goddess of cats, the rising sun as well as the moon, truth, enlightenment, sexuality and birth, fertility and the harvest, the home, music, dance and the arts, among many other attributes. She is also sometimes considered to be the Egyptian version of the Greek Artemis and Roman Diana. Halloween was originally celebrated as the Feast of Bast and Sekhmet. Sekhmet is Bast’s twin sister, who has a lion head. While Bast is associated with life, Sekhmet is associated with death and is the destroyer goddess). In this stylized, abstracted portrait, I portrayed Bast with a golden corona or solar disc to represent the rising sun and life. The triangles are a symbol of fertility as well as the creative power. Mixed Media (liquid copper leaf, gold acrylic, oil pastels, colored pencils, and black art marker) on tan Canson pastel paper. Original work measures 19×12.5 inches. View more of my artwork at www.lynnetteshelley.com Also check out my companion piece to this artwork – Bast’s sister goddess Sekhmet

  • Sekhmet means “The Mighty One.” Sister Goddess to Bast, the lion-headed Sekhmet was the avenger / warrior Goddess in ancient Egypt and one of the most powerful of the Egyptian mythological gods and goddesses. She embodied the destructive force of the sun and she meted out divine punishment on behalf of the gods and the pharoahs. Conversely, she was also a goddess of healing and of surgery and medicines. She is usually depicted in red dress to denote her avenging nature and she is also known as the “Eye of Ra”. Original artwork measures 12.5×19 inches and was created with liquid copper leaf, gold paint pen, oil pastels, colored pencils, black art marker on heavy textured Strathmore paper. This artwork is a companion piece to my depiction of Sekhmet’s gentler sister Bast Bast of the Rising Sun View more of my artwork online at www.lynnetteshelley.com
