Powlett River is the spot our illustrous government has told us we will build the southern hemispheres largest desalination plant. There has been no consultation or environmental impact studies just an announcement of what will happen. Needless to say this move to convert a wilderness and pastoral area into a pollution guzzling industrial estate is not being well recieved. To run this $3,200,000,000 plant an additional 1,200,000,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases will be released into the atmosphere each year plus it will pollute the local marine environment at a rate of 7,000litres a second which will obviously alter and possibly (some say definitely) destroy the local marine environment. This will in turn force the Philip Island Seal and Fairy Penguin (Parade) population to look for better feeding grounds risking the $75,000,000 a year that tourists spend visiting these natural attractions. On top of that the site for the plant as you can see is absolutely gorgeous (it’s 200m from where I took this photo). To find out more visit your water your say 100% of profits from this image will go to the, your water your say action group fighting fund (I’ve put the margin up more than usual as the donation thing is kind of pointless unless there’s a bit of money in it). My five year old daughter found this butterfly at Powlett River when we were there a few weeks ago at the bubble get together. We found this friendly little fella in the toilets where Zahra picked it up. It then spent ten minutes on her finger before it finally flew off. Stormy morning along the Bass Coast ~ A big swell offshore and some beautiful light to shoot with…Got double whamied during this shoot, firstly with the big splash soaking camera and filters, and me…then getting back to the car in some heavy rain..all part of the fun and worth it when you get a good dawn shoot in..
I love the simple elements in this shot. The soft honeycomb type rock gets erroded into so many interesting shapes along this section of coast. Always makes for interesting compositions…I was going to put the mono up as per below, but the color one has the edge for me as it hightlights all those great tones in the rock….thanks for having a look…
Had a school ask me to take a Landscape Photography workshop for there Outdoor Ed students on Philip Island. I suggested The Pinnacles as a good location but as I haven’t been there since I was courting my wife more than ten years ago I thought I’d better check it out again so I’d be familiar with the location when I took the kids. Before going down I gave a mate I met on the bub a call, the amazingly talented Tony Middleton and we decided to meet up. It is extremely rare for either of us to shoot with others but having so much in common we flowed together well. It was also a real treat to get to see some of Tones amazing 617 original trannies and some of the shots he’s saving up for limited release when he opens his gallery. Over the years each of us has got in the habit of picking up rubbish on our shoots too so it was funny to see us both load up independent of each other after shooting this wonderful sunset. I’m sure there are responsible fisherman/women out there but from what I’ve seen a lot of them are bloody pigs the way they wantonly dump all there rubbish everywhere (sorry had to get that out of my system). Anyway Thai take away on the walk in Shearwater (muttonbird) antics on the way out. What a fantastic way to spend an evening. This was one of the first shots of the evening and the sun was still a little too high and therefore bright to make this work as well as it could of. A nice cloud on the horizon and/ or a few big overhead cloud reflectors would of helped but hey I’m not a local who can go back every second night for the perfect conditions like some people (I’m not jealous of where Tone lives or his 617, really I’m not….). Took this on my Pinnacles sunset shoot with Tony Middleton with my new 5DmkII last week. I must say this camera has totally transformed the way I shoot. When I shot with Velvia I’d rarely shoot more than 36 shots a day. On this shoot with digital I shot 102 shots in around an hour. I bracket everything (for a few shots I took 6 brackets) and of those shots I’m happy with at least one of each composition set I took. Wonderful to just shoot each scene with different lenses, filters and compositions to see what works best without worrying about the expense and with the ability to check you’ve got it or not and bracket a bit further afield if necessary. Strangely satisfying to flow so quickly from one viewpoint to the next too. With this shot it was just walking from one spot to the next and thought a boulder shot would be good, now are there any that stand out, and literally as the thought occurs I see these little beauties which as you can see were quite unique in this boulder strewn landscape. After a bit of tripod fun on the boulders this was the result. Would be interesting to take this one again under different lighting conditions but this one works for me anyway. Got into a pretty precarious posi to take this one but hey it was the only way to get the shot. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM @ 16mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 1/10th sec / Aperture: f/16 / WB: Auto For other shots from this area check out my Bass Coast gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

I know I’ve uploaded a few shots from this shoot but I loved this one so much I thought I’d share it too. I usually try to avoid mass uploads on the one location at the one time but this little shoot was so amazing that I can’t help but upload another one. The Pinnacles, Phillip Island. Recently I have felt that I really wanted to take an image such as this…at the end of summer and especially such a dry one. It is at times like these that I can still see a real beauty in the country, the grass has almost become white it is so dry, on particular evenings when the sky the sky turns on a real show this ‘white’ grass can take on pastel hues as well. It certainly a far cry from what the region is agriculturally famous for (rolling green hills)…But then again 100years ago this very spot was rainforest. I can’t help but sigh bubblesite / photography blog / portfolio ©T.Middleton2009 —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——

Taken at The Pinnacles @ Cape Woolamai, Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia. I loved how the colour of this rock was different to all those around it. I took many shots of the one rock but think I liked this one the best. I really loved this place and cannot wait to get myself back there, there’s so many different angles this place can be captured from and I want to find them all! Taken with my Canon 40D and 10-22mm wide angle lens. 4 seconds @ f14, ISO 100. One of the photos in my Phillip Island series, please click here to see the rest of my images in the series
