:) / doesnt the title sound so arty?
Just playing around with camera whilst my daughter was at dancing lessons. Anyway there was a puddle and the ball rolled in it and I got an idea for a photo. I took quite a few and this one just appealed to me. It was like basketball was there and my son’s reflection a memory. The image has just been rotated vertically and no other processing done to it. Black and white halftoning simulate highlights and shadows on a torn shirt, revealing a basketball underneath. Produced from a (heavily edited) photograph I took of a basketball inside an actual ripped t-shirt.

Prisoners play basketball in the recreation yard of the Brevard County jail in Mims Florida USA. Jail overcrowding has become a real problem, in local jails, allowing more recreation time for inmates, just to free some of them from the holding areas. This image was shot through the guards glassed in viewing room. The Chuck Taylor All-Star Tennis Shoe was introduced in 1917 and changed the face of sports footwear for generations. They are still popular today and remain relatively unchanged although their country of production is different. These are a pair of my old beat up “Chucks” that just beckoned to be painted. I was going to up the values of the shoes a touch in this composition but I kind of liked the subtle glow that was achieved by keeping the shoes lighter so I left it in its current state. The piece is painted with Rublev 18th century reproduction watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The Rublev paint adds nice texture when repeatedly glazed. The original is 14” x 10” in size. Featured in Painters in Modern Times group in August 2009. /
We all know how much President Obama loves basketball. As a basketball fan myself, I had a lot of fun creating this!

I was taking some evening shots in an empty playground today when this kid came along and scrambled up and sat in this basketball hoop. The sun was just about to set and the moon hung in the southern sky – which was hazy and pink from the forest fire south of us. He seemed a bit surprised by how it felt to be up there and said he was going to go up there more often.
