How will he remember me / If I’m stoned by the crowd / deep down in his heart
Precious is the Memory I wrote this poem in response to Helen Bascom’s image Precious is the Memory and her question beside it “How will he remember me?” which I used as the opening line. I would like to thank Helen for allowing me to display this image here and for including this poem in her Active Art blog.

I’ve been sitting here scanning more of the never ending back catalouge of old negatives and came across this random bit of street life… and I had to laugh… it’s the perfect counterpoint to one of Helen’s great early masterpeices… My Blue Boobies… which sadly I can no longer find in her portfolio… but hey it was pretty unforgettable in that quiet and restrained sort of way she has when she want’s to make a point… so Helen this one is for you…. / . / The revolution is not between these thighs….... / . /

So our good friend Helen has finally been given the old iron-side and sac tossed down the river like so much discarded kittenry. To be perfectly honest, I’m surprised it didn’t come sooner, but was hoping it wouldn’t come at all. / The woman of course to whom I’m referring using the aformentioned link-thru to wit will not function, is none other than Helen Bascom. / In keeping with a ruddy good sense of giggles and silliness and something I know will probably make Helen piddle, I would like to offer the following rememberance as if the woman had kicked off; something I’m sure those who have snapped her guitar strings wish were true but will summarily be sacked for at a later date. Now then… Helen was a wonderful woman with nerves of steal. I say steal of course because I believe someone stole them while she slept and replaced them with guitar string. This lovely woman was to say, wound up like a balista, which was exactly what she would do in the case of her nerves being tested…that is to say, unleash a venomous fury the likes of which the old blck hearted one would get a chill at everytime she was pitted out of her cage. / Like an angry tiger being teased by an overweight brat at the zoo, Helen was always ready to tear out someone’s jugular all in the name of three things. The first and what some scholars who research the cause of the third world war is what was and will continue to be like warm milk and heroin to Helen: the truth. Truth as it would be seen in the eyes of the many is a fundamental thing, but lacks boundaries and comes in many forms, is open to interpretation and thusly maleable…Helen could not have this. Not to put too fine a point on it, if a man is black he’s been tarred and feathered and if he’s white then he’s been in the blasted freezer too long he’s gone bad! The second and what I myself consider more important than stolen cheese is: acceptance. Accepting the things in life and in others that are different from your own is the only way the human race will ever stop masturbating in the shower and start actually screwing each other out loud. Politicians practice the former all the time and the general publi is forced to bend over receive a proper fist fucking all in the name of discretion and liberty. The third is something I’ve never been able to confirm though I whole hearted beleive in: just a plain good time to be had by all. The woman loved a good fight and was always willing to whack you on your Jon Tomas for thinking bad thoughts about republicans when you should be filling up kerosine tanks when you think about them instead. / Now while Helen may not be missed by all, she will be missed and even those of you out there who despised the woman alongside the ones that do indeed miss her now, I have a charge for you. I say everyone that comments on this journal must display one reason they will solemly miss her and one reason they are glad to see her be gone. Comments in otherwise will be deleted and summarily cat sacked. For those of you who actually do know Helen and are in her area, I have a favor of a different flavor. Slide over to her house with a bottle of Jim Bean, some advil and bottled water for morning and don’t forget a wooden ruler. EDIT All fun and games aside, I won’t be deleting comments without the good/bad comment about Helen. This seems to have become a big issue with a lot of people on RedBubble and in the event that the forum thread gets locked, this journal will remain open…I hope. / NEW RULE: keep it clean and no attacks, otherwise, opinions are your own, feel free to share. UPDATE Apparently this is becomming quite a stirring issue! / / pointed this out in a journal link Forum about ok, where is Helen? Growing Concerns? i would be afraid to complain about anyone if they bothered me now Shock Horror Ok, What Happened To Helen? To My Friends and Suppoters Sad Day Its a Website People MY PERSONAL STANCE ON SOME (LIMITED) RED BUBBLE POLICY Is RedBubble A Family?? Bascom kicked out of The Tent for calling a spade a spade leaving red bubble Art and Political Censorship John Nelson / Will be leaving us by tomorrow, his work has already been removed, anyone wishing to say their farewells best do it soon. Having had most of the day to digest the news of Helen’s deletion and consider my own position on RedBubble I have made the choice which is the only one open to someone like myself. I am a principled person, I have beliefs and I am a fair human being in so much that I give an equal ear to all sides and come to a reasoned conclusion and decision. / As it turns out I find myself believing that this is no longer the normal way of doing things on the bubble site and have taken the decision to leave having been here for just under 2yrs. Many friends have been made along the way, my art did improve through inspiration initially but things for me have stagnated on the site in the last 6mths or so, for whatever reason. / Often a sad event will be the catalyst for a decision to take a different path where my art is concerned. Anyone (who knows me or my work) who wishes to remain in contact (and those who don’t but would like to) can bubblemail me until tomorrow for more details. I wish everyone who chooses to stay at RB all the best for the future. We will also soon be losing Terugvanver / to quote him because his words will be lost when he deletes his account Today is a very sad day in RB. / Very sad… Today, my friend’s profile was deleted from RB. / Helen is my friend.. / Her art decorates my wall.. / Because her work was work with a message. / Like Blood Diamonds, a protest against the diamond mining slavery in Africa. True, Helen can be rough, but I never caught her dishonest. / We play nice in RB, but sometimes things are so bloody wrong that one must speak up. / I’m not American and I have nothing against anybody. / I believe in freedom. Freedom of expression, freedom in art, freedom of movement, freedom of sex. freedom over the will to end your life, freedom of… and I can go on forever, / Think about this: we know our Sun was the product of interstellar dust, created by several supernovae. Gravity pulled it in and what escaped the pull of what became the Sun and was big enough, ended up in planets, moons and asteroids. Much of what we have on Earth, our tiny speck of dust in the Universe, was there from the beginning. / We came from dust…. True, new research shows essential building blocks for life like aminoacids were brought here by comets and asteriods. / Yet it all has the same origin. / Why this bla bla about this? / Because, when you really think about it (yes.. switch of tv, internet, radio and mobile phone for a while)... every living thing on Earth is born in absolute freedom! / To say it in a funny way… when you are born, you are assumed to follow the rules of that country without ever been asked if you want to comply to them (no.. am not preaching anarchy here at all..). Helen is a person who understands this principal right very well. / And yes… many times she has been insulted and shouted back. / Hell.. we are human beings and we should take full advantage of our brain functions. / You know, somehow we are expected to rule by our Neo-Cortex only but NO.. we have that basic limbic system in our head which defines our emotions. / It’s part of every living creature (besides the point we, humans, show very louzy control of higher brainfunctions, resulting in greed and suffering). And so, at the end of my debate and support for Helen.. / I cannot be part of a system which violates our principal right of Freedom of Expression. Be well my friends… / Some have my email address. / My website is www.stolkphotography.com. / Photography is my passion, based on principals like freedom. / Always… / Take care.. Will wait until tomorrow to exit the bubble. We have also now lost: Roy Barry / We will also soon be losing: Aaron Schwartz Bye / We will also soon be losing: Gingy / Say goodbye to Marion Cullen Knee Jerk is Not my Style / Others now lost: / Exultation / labelladame A Note of Remorse that is perhaps a little late, if you follow this link to continue chastising the man, I AM GOING to remove it, no more blood should be shed and there’s too many good artists going the way of the albatross, just read it

Helen Bascom has been relieved of her duties as a voice of morality and decency among us. Helen is not necessarily the most popular massager of self indulgent egos and you may or may not agree with her methods, but there is no doubt that she is a caring and gutsy human being. She has never shied away from expressing her abhorrence of all forms of oppression and prejudice; racism sexism homophobia extreme religious zealotry Nazism etc. / / Various extreme right wing morons have waged a battle against her for years, these are the people who believe a Black man is not fit to lead a country and who would stoop to any depths to see Helen and other liberal minded people silenced. They use lies and deceit to further their self serving causes. I have personally been goaded by them too. It sickens me that they have won :-( / / This is a very sad day for people here who care about the things that are really important and that make a very real difference to the quality of humanity, surely among adults a few swear words aimed at an antagonist do not constitute a hanging offence? Or do they? / / This is a forum on the subject
Where’s Helen?
September 29th was a black day on the bubble for a lot of people. On that day, the voice of truth and reason failed on RB and was banished irrevocably. Helen Bascom had her account deleted without opportunity to defend or explain. To those who don’t know her, Helen is one of the longest standing members of this site, an amazing artist and writer and a passionate lobbyist for change for the better in this world. I have never met a single human being with such grit and determination, such passion, such COMPASSION, and such integrity…... She was the voice of reason and conscience and constantly spoke out to address issues that were unfair and injust in not only her country but across the planet. Sure she was outspoken, determined, ballsy, and flew in the face of convention when she felt “convention” was unacceptable. But she never missed an opportunity to speak out, stand up, or defend the underdog or those who had been treated unfairly. For this, Helen was very controversial, but love her or dislike her, you had to admit, her passion and energy were overwhelming and admirable and she always fought unwaveringly for what she believed in. I use the past tense “was” here because on redbubble, it appears that the subject of Helen is past. However Helen WAS all these things and Helen still IS ! And I intend to keep the spirit of what Helen stood for on RB alive. On top of these things, she is a fine human being, and my friend. I respect and admire her. And if I do nothing else here, I will speak out about this in her defence, while she is unable to. My sense of fairplay dictates that if I don’t delete my account at Redbubble then I must stay here and continue the fight FOR HER. This T Shirt is one way I can protest about Helen’s treatment here on the bubble and show all those who take pleasure in her departure, that those of us who can see past their petty egos and opinions outnumber them by far, and we will continue to fight for the truth and focus on what really matters.
Why you might ask? Go ask anyone at Redbubble “where is Helen Bascom?”

This past weekend we experienced the most lovely and temperate weather. I decided to take Malcolm out to play. Of course I have to take my camera and my tripod. I am gathering up my stuff and Malcolm is growing impatient. “C’mon Mom! Let’s go! Let’s go!” he insists. “I’m coming Malcolm,” I tell him. “Hold on.” Finally I get my stuff together and as I open the door I tell him, “You must learn patience Malcolm. It only took about 3 minutes for me to get ready.” “Yeah,” he says. “But it was the longest 3 minutes of my life!” Ah, to be age 4 years again. :-) My beautiful Obvious Child
