  • A large Neolithic long barrow near Rodmarton, Gloucestershire. The barrow was excavated in the Victorian period and artefacts removed before it was filled in again. There are at least three side chambers, though these have now collapsed. A retaining wall has been built around the barrow to prevent erosion.

  • The sun goes down on the only remaining English Electric Lightning at the former RAF station at Binbrook, Lincolnshire, UK. Binbrook’s Lightnings provided quick reaction cover for UK airspace during the Cold War, and the Squadrons based there were the last to operate the type. Lightnings were retired from RAF service at the end of the 1980s. RAF Binbrook closed down upon their retirement. A proportion of the sales of this image will go to the Dave Cole Memorial Fund. • These nicely lit trees are standing on a barrow near the town of Svaneke on the north-east corner of Bornholm. Furthermore, the barrow is situated on a hill top, making it easy to have a clean sky as a background. Bornholm holds an exceptional position in Denmark when it comes to testimonials from the Bronze Age. Here, the biggest concentration of preserved barrows is found. Most of them near to the coast lines. Barrows like this were built in the older part of the Bronze Age (1700 – 1100 B.C.) of earth and turf around and above the dead person, who was laid fully dressed in a stone- or oak coffin. The barrows were often extended during later burials, which meant, that they could grow to considerable sizes. This one belongs to the bigger ones. The tombs were equipped with grave goods, which reflected the position of the dead in the society. / In the younger part of the Bronze Age, habits changed, and dead persons were burned. Urns with ashes from these dead persons may be found both in barrows like this, or in smaller ones made of stones. / / / / Bornholm / Architecture / Forests / Seascapes / Landscapes / Black’n’whites / /
