  • My wife and I recently spent a week in the Barrington tops region north of Newcastle. Not only is it beautiful country but it is close to home. Our first night there a storm was passing just to the south of us through Dungog. This was a lightning strike close to us and the flash illuminated the rain falling from the clouds. As the storm was far away I had the apeture open to f4 which is fine for distant lightning but terrible for a close flash. I have had to adjust in Camera Raw to get the details of the lightning stike as good as I can. not other adjustments have been done. Image taken with a Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm lens at f4 and 30sec exposure.

  • During our recent trip to Barrington Tops we took a day to drive around the Williams and Allyn rivers. Along the Allyn river rd is a swimming hole called Ladies Well. It is one of the prettiest places we found in the Barrington region and we had it all to ourselves. I chickened out of going for a swim as I found it to cold but my wife Miriam did go in. This is the lower pool which is a little harder to get to as it is a slogg across slippery rocks and rainforest. / This is a Panoramic image made from 2 shots taken with a Nikon D300 using the 18-200VR lens. Both images were processed from RAW in CS3 and then stitched.

  • This image was shot while standing in the middle of Percy Creek in the Barrington Tops National Park, NSW, using a tripod-mounted Canon 5D Mark II in January 2009. I’d only had the 5dmk2 since early December and this was its first good workout. Using the Sigma 50mm f1.4 and no filters, my aim was to achieve perfect clarity in this shady spot and I pretty much reckon I did. You can barely see it in large view, but zooming right in on this image on my screen brings out the individual strands of the tiny spider’s web just above the water on the left AND water droplets on each strand. All this so-called talk about 5dmk2 focusing issues is crap. OK, it’s only got a 9 point system, but I prefer it much more than the 45 point (or more) disco happening on other, unmentionable, cameras. I didn’t want to compromise clarity on basically this flat surface so I kept the ISO at 50 and reluctantly went to f16 to get the timelapse up to 10 seconds. I framed and composed and shot it in Monochrome, but in converting I toyed with the settings set to Standard. This took the file size from 10 megabytes to 19 – a quick lesson in shooting in RAW and Monochrome and assuming the colour data wasn’t captured! Needless to say, this image is best viewed large See also Percy Creek>

  • Some of you may have twigged that I have been revisiting photographs I took over 3 bodacious days back in January 2009 while camping at Horse Swamp in the Barrington Tops National Park. The reason is primarily because I have been too busy at work and a bit ill to go shooting of late, and so have been going back and reviewing the results of previous outings, only this time with a more patient eye. Back then, I had had the Canon 5D Mark II only a few weeks, and, I am willing to admit, not much in the way of filters beyond a UV. I knew I needed to learn about them and use them, which I did and now do, and consequently the sky doesn’t feature much in the shots taken on this trip. This image was shot in Monochrome, in the middle of a hot afternoon, with a tripod under a fern canopy. I had borrowed Tatiana’s EF 24-105mm f4L Zoom Lens and shot this as a single RAW file at 24mm, ISO 50, over 0.8 seconds at f16. With this photograph I wanted to feature the huge swirl, which was happening due to the fact that the falls basically cascaded into a dead end before taking a 90 degree turn off to the right of frame. ‘Twas a bit of a challenge getting it all in without dominating the composition. Fortunately the perspective I needed slotted in with the rule of thirds.
