Gougane Barra (Irish: Guagán Barra, meaning “Barra’s retreat enclosed by mountains”) is a settlement, west of Macroom in County Cork, Ireland. / FEATURED in: / All Water in Motion, April ‘09 / Historic Churches, April ‘09 / First Things, July ‘09 / Rural Around The Globe, July ‘09 with thanks The name Gougane Barra comes from Saint Finbarr, who is said to have built a monastery on an island in the lake nearby during the 6th century. The present ruins date from around 1700 when a priest called Denis O’Mahony retreated to the island. During the times of the Penal Laws, Gougane Barra’s remoteness meant that it became a popular place for the celebration of the Roman Catholic Mass. This image is of the church at Gougane Barra – built on the island near the monastery/well site at end of 19th century. Canon EOS 400D 18-55mm lens
This is the runway at Barra airport. Yes – the planes take off and land on the beach, so the timetables depend on the tide times. http://www.orcadiaimages.co.uk

While I stopped at Garrynamonie Beach for 2 nights which allowed me great views down to the Isle of Barra… and the possibilty of great sunsets however wind rain and cloud had other ideas.
I’m continuing my series The World from Above with a view of the medieval Kisimul Castle which lies on a rock in Castlebay on the Outer Hebridean island of Barra. Taken just before landing at the island’s beach airport. At the start of my 2007 tour of the Outer Hebrides, we left cloudy Glasgow to fly to sunny Barra on the only scheduled flight in the world to land on a beach with the timetable dictated by the tides! I can highly recommend this amazing trip in a Twin Otter prop plane seating just 15 passengers, and the first officer doubling up as steward! “If it had been clear leaving Glasgow, we would have taken the scenic route a wee bit lower over the Sound of Mull…,” apologised the pilot. He made up for it by doing a circle of Barra before landing. Please enlarge to appreciate the light, etc. better.

This is the Airport on Barra. / Located in the Outer Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland, Barra is where my wifes bloodline comes from ( Dawn Shirley Elizabeth McNeil ), so we made a pilgrimage back. / As the plane lands on Cockle Strand when the tides out, you get a rumble when the wheels touch down. / But what a marvellous trip. ( we felt so at home ) / I just love those Islands. / I took this with my Pentax 35mm, so it may be a bit small as it was scanned. / ( this is part of my shoebox collection ) / ( hdrx2 images using Dynamic-PhotoHDR & PhotoImpact12 with picasa3 as Post Op ) =============== /
