These colourful birds inhabit mainly forested areas, but will often live close to suburban areas as a source of food. The parrots are usually around 40 to 45 cms in length (which includes a 20cm tail). The male king parrot sports a brilliant red breast and head, black tail and dark green body. The female has a dullish green head and body with a dullish red underbelly. They are found along the coastal areas of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. / / A King Parrot will feed on fruits, seeds or small insects. Birds close to suburban areas may feed on food crumbs and scraps. It is important not to feed King Parrots any leftovers, as their diet is much different to that of humans. King Parrots living close to suburbia have become quite domesticated, and whilst being cautious, are not afraid of human contact. King Parrots will often perch on an outstretched arm to feed on bird seed from an open palm. The King Parrot breeds September through January. King Parrots will often travel together in small parties. King Parrots are large birds and in our (australianfauna.com) opinion, not suitable for captivity. However, these birds are often kept as pets here in Australia in less than ample enclosures. This is a 9 week old English Setter Puppy who I took care of after my friend had a litter of Llewllin English Setters. These are the field setters as opposed to Show Setters that were introduced when Lavarak began breeding English Setters for Competition. His coloring is unusual since he is a tri with liver and black ticking and beautiful green/amber eyes. This breed is intelligent, very affectionate and needs a lot of family attention to grow up to be wonderful couch potatoes. I took a series of shots of Barney when I took care of him for several weeks and delighted in his curious and playful nature. Given his sense of wonder and adventure, Barney made a great subject for photographing dogs which I love to do owning two Setters myself. Given their lack of pretension and self consciousness, it is delightful to take photographs of our canine companions. I have a series of amusing and poignant photos of this adorable puppy. Candid shots of dogs are very popular and there are many wonderful photography books on canines given their unique and very different personalities. I adore them and believe people can benefit and learn a lot from our beloved and dear animal friends. / Please view this in the large format.
