  • When I seen this old Falling Barn, not far from the little town I live in.. I new I had to get a shot of it… and I’m glad I did.. because it has since fallen completely…

  • I found this old barn traveling along the Cour d’alene lake. As I walked up to the entrance of the barn, I heard what I thought was sprinklers turning on. I looked down and there it was a HUGE rattlesnake. So this barn was nicknamed The Rattlesnake Barn. • Black tomcat peeping through a hole in the old barn.

  • This image was taken late afternoon in the loft of our barn (badly in need of a new roof). At first I was captivated by the points of light in the semi-dark loft and tried capturing them. Then I thought to myself how much more interesting they would be if you could see the light in its path from the roof to the spot of light on the floor so I began to move the loose hay on the floor from one side of the barn to the other. (I am terribly allergic to hay.) The dust worked its magic and created a spectacular light show. Several hours later my lungs are still agonizing over the assault! / Shown here with off white mat in mocha flat frame. /

  • An old abandoned barn in a field at winter

  • In the early days fodder to get the stock through the winter was usually hay. The whole process was done by hand in the earliest days later a horse draw hay rake like the one shown was used. The hay then was place by hand into stacks around a pole to help keep it from blowing away. By pressing the hay down as they started and latter by the weight of the hay, it would become fairly waterproof. This took a certain skill by the stackers. The hay would cure by the heat generated by the release of moisture in the hay and compression. A fence was then place around the stack to keep the stock out until it was time for them to feed on it….Image was taken on The Mountain Farm Museum, GSMNP. The barn seen is the Enloe-Floyd Barn, and is of the Shotgun style

  • One of the more modern structures in Cades Cove. A lot of the barns that were there, have gradually fallen in and nature reclaimed them. I can remember back to when a few people still lived in the Cove. They were allowed to live there by an arrangement with the park service when the land was sold. They are all gone now including those that stayed in the cabins in the Elkmont area. This barn sits beside the Cades Cove Loop Road. It still is in great shape and will probably out live me. I wish I had thought and taken the time 30 years ago and shoot a lot of the structures that are forever gone. Hind site is always better than foresight. Never pass up a chance for a shot, what you pass up today may be gone tomorrow…a block and tackle was often hung from the overhang of the roof to pull hay up and into the window up top.. image taken as mornings 1st light tops over the ridge to warm the already beautiful colors, and intensify parts of the field back of the barn…Cades Cove is located in the Great Smoky Mountains and one of the more heavily visited areas.

  • I found this lovely Autumn farm scene on a dirt road beside the Watauga River near Boone, North Carolina. Farms like these and a simpler way of life would have been very common 50 or more years ago in these mountains but now they are few and far between as this region has become very popular for tourists and summer vacation homes. Taken with Nikon D50.

  • Von touched up my barn photo differently than I saw it. His sepia tones are much more interesting don’t you think? And he didn’t crop it even though I did. Do you like it this way?

  • Er … well … you could drive through it! One of my most LOCALLY popular images, and something of a signature work that serves as the background for my business card and other promotional materials. • AND NOT ONE MINUTE TOO SOON FOR ME !!!

  • As Paul McGuire and I began to walk down the trail towards Smuggler’s Cove along the Hayburn Wyke in North Yorkshire, between Scarborough and Ravenscare, we trekked through an open field, and in the corner was an old blue tractor sitting and perhaps waiting to start his usual day’s work, or maybe reminiscing of the days gone by, and the work he did in his youth. He sat quiet with old age, sheltered under a weary barn, which seemed held up only by the trees and bushes on either sides and at the back of it. Nature was nursing these two old farm hands in their old age. As we walked by, we knew that this was a scene we needed to capture There was something comforting about this old tractor and barn, like two old friends who stand together, as trophies of past glories. This is a HDR image combining 5 bracketed shots, using Photomatix Pro for Macs, and adjusting some tones in Enhance Details as part of Tone Mapping. • I was driving through the countryside, when I spotted this old barn. I thought the sky had an interesting pattern or coloration, and would accent the barn nicly. Even though the barn has seen its better days, it is still being used by the farmer. The photo was taken in Page County, Virginia. I did apply a slight curves adjustment in Photoshop CS3 to enhance midtone exposure. This is my second attempt at textures. /
