The arctic fox lives farther north than any other fox. They are well adapted for the cold harsh weather of the Arctic. The arctic fox can hunt lemming that they can’t see beneath the snow, but if the arctic fox can’t kill enough to eat, it will settle for leftovers from other animals. Photograph taken in Iceland Feb. 2008.

So-named because of their dog-like bark calls, the Barking Owl can also emit a terrifying scream which has given them another name – ‘screaming lady’. Rarely heard, even by those living near a barking owls nest, its scream is said to be so spine-chilling that it has been supposed it may be responsible for giving rise to stories of the ‘Bunyip’ – A fearsome creature of aboriginal folklore which inhabits creeks and lonely billabongs.
