I want to start off by saying that I am not a fan of flash. I avoid using flash like the plague because I feel it ruins the atmosphere. Ambient lighting is much more attractive than images captured with flash, especially the usual pop up flash of most D-SLR cameras. Shooting bands in basements and garages has forced me to find ways of retaining some atmosphere, while still being able to get the clarity I need in my photos. Over the last couple months most of the local bands have to to expect great photos from me regardless of the lighting. I always meter first and get the white balance where I need it and ask that the bands that want photos taken keep the lights on for at least one song so that I can get some photos with available light. Time after time I find I like the atmosphere much more in the available light shots. The problem is bands tend to play in the dark, and when they don’t, the lighting is still miserably inadequate. Well, the pop up flash can be used to retain some of that atmosphere and appear almost as available light when used right. In the dark, the camera will strobe the flash to assist focusing. This is a good opportunity to preview something else. You can direct the light from your pop up flash very easily with your hand. The strobing will show you what areas you are shadowing with your hand and allow you to illuminate exactly what you want to. Try different positions and contortions with your hand to direct the flash light where you need it in different situations. Like where the flash will hit something in the foreground that you don’t want in the shot and cause the rest to be underexposed. Just cup your hand over the flash and force it to shadow that obstruction to eliminate it from the shot and create a more effective atmosphere. It can also help when you plan to do some post processing and make a certain subject the focus of an image.

Wow, what a big weekend… It started with a band shoot, then a midsumma burlesque shoot where I stalked Adrian on his first real photography gig, then a gay pride march shoot and then I totally crashed into bed and today I feel really yuck (not hung over in case you were presuming, just bloody tired). Anyways, I have only had a few minutes to even look at my shots from the first two shoots. I’m really new to this concept of event photogrpahy. As in where people are relying on you to produce something more artistic than a happy snap. So here are a few of my shots from Saturday evening. Constructive criticism, comments, advice all very welcome. I want to learn! Here is the full gallery

Crazy musical duo Jase From Outta Space and Skirtchaser (the names say it all!) asked fellow bubbler James and I to come ‘round and talk ideas for some promo shots after their manager aeris saw our work on RedBubble. We’re still working out when to do the ‘proper shoot’ but these impromptu test shots have already got our creative juices flowing. ...This is a mix of both our shots if you were wondering

Pair artwork with lyrics of favorite songs, individuals or groups. List in the forum 5-10 of your favorite bands and performers. It will be interesting to see how many of the members in our group share the same passion for a particular vocalist, song writer and/or band. I have paired several of my photographs with lyrics from some very talented artists including: Bob Dylan, Pink, Iron Maiden, Michael Jackson, Carly Simon, Billy Joel, Maria Muldaur, Doors, Cat Stevens, Elton John etc. I have a file of many lyrics that I will pair with photographs that fit the theme of my photographic image. Music is a universal language to be shared. I have observed some artists painting the lyrics of songs as well as CD covers, one of the most underestimated art forms. The winner of this challenge will win their choice of a $20 voucher from Red bubble, the book published by Red Bubble, “In The Moment” or your choice of any card of one of the members of our group. I want to solidify the group experience by supporting our members and selling their cards is very encouraging and reinforcing. My hope is that every member has a card sold during their membership in this group. Also future gifts will be donations to charities that afflict our members to promote research and more effective treatments for medical and psychological disorders. Please submit your art paired with lyrics from your favorite artists by May 15th.

Hey there Guys & Red Bubblers…...... / As you know i’ve been spending much less time here recently and no I am not writing from beyond the grave, I am still very much alive! lol / Things have been a little busy for me here in Bournemouthville, the Southernest part of the coast in UK. / Recently I been working hard on band photography, a few private parties, and mainly promoting my company here. / i’ve had some really great news recently as i’ve been recommended through a new contact of mine here, and am going to do his friends Wedding in May. / So if one phonecall wasn’t enuff yesterday to stop me from jumping around like a flea all day, I also received another enquiry to do a Wedding just before this one. / Fingers crossed, that this person too, will acquire my services & be blessed on his Wedding Day with my smile, and professional approcah. / To be honest…..... / i’ve never done a wedding before, but have happily taken shots as a guest in the past & compiled a video for the couple, but this is going to be a major turning point in my career, and its alot of responsibilty. / I’m use to taking normal shots of people or candid shots of bands etc, but this is a special day for people & only one which can be remembered through the images taken, rather like a storybook, each picture depicting every emotion from family & friends. / I’m rather looking forward to this…......... / I’m sure I might be a little nervous on the day, but i work exceptionally well under pressure, and because the guest lists are quite small, will be quite a cosy wedding on both occassions. / So with a few Events coming up this year, and my persisting ambitious attittude to succeed in what I do, this year looks like it could be getting better for me. / After spending the past couple of years, building my portfolio, and trying most things, finally I am going onto better things. / I have also been approcahed by a well known band, to possibly cover their 4 day tour in the UK, and am now now waiting to hear back from them as they are touring in the USA currently. / I’ve also got alot of other things up my sleeve for this year, and so my website will keep displaying many different things, I love variety! / New friends are putting in good words with people for me, and slowly I am getting more noticed, so all is good in my world. / Hope everyone here is happy, and if you get a minute check out my latest pictures of a band which I photographed the other eve on my band photography page. / The band is called Lady Winwoods Maggot & they ROCK! / FFP Creative

  • A Trivia Question For Music Aficionados

I’ve been searching for a long time for an answer to this. / Anyone that’s a vinyl collector, musician, DJ, whatever I hope you can help. It’s a trivia question that I’ve asked myself but can’t find an answer anywhere. Back when I was a teenager…or more precise pre teen the standard time for most songs were roughly 2 – 4 minutes in duration, and I think 4 minutes may be stretching things a bit I don’t know. I know songs like ‘Hey Jude’ ‘Stairway To Heaven’ to name a couple exceeded that time frame, but what I need to know is what was the very first song, band, musician, that first broke the record and went beyond that 2- 4 minute song play. / Anyone know ? ...just one of those nagging questions that I can’t find an answer to. Sure would love to know though.... :) Thank you my friends, Bear

It’s very cold. I could hardly feel my hands on my way home from work. Also, it is, as Grammy would say, Snowing to Beat the Band outside! Speaking of which, I got a warning of Danger, Falling Snow on my way home. Yeah. No kidding. Anywho, after snapping a few pictures of our Snow Season I drove on in Solitude – lonesome as a leaf without a tree. I got home and sat here in Solitude as well. That is, until I logged on to Yahoo messenger and talked to Ozjami , and MSN messenger to talk to Googa . Oh well! Well, in case I forget to send Season’s Greetings your way in a timely fashion, I wish Happy Holidays to you all.

Who wants to make a logo for my band? As some of you know, my band is in the studio as we speak. So, I have a tight ass thrash/core band, I’m not telling you the name yet….even though some of you already know it! So, if you are interested in creating a logo for me, which would be seen everywhere all over the place with the best band you have heard since you learned to open your ears….;) Seriousness. She’s my brother’s girlfriend Lydia, and she’s extremely talented! She plays piano, and has a very powerful voice for her size & age. / Besides being in The Jallah Richards Band with my brother & two of their friends, she’s a songwriter. She’s written a lot of stuff, & actually released her debut CD this past summer entitled, “Grand Dreams”. If you’re interested, you can check her out here or on Myspace. / She wrote a few of the songs for/about my brother…One in particular she wrote about a girl they both know. She thought the girl was chasing after my brother, turns out she was chasing after his best friend! It’s the first song on the cdbaby website…Anywho…Yeah. That’s all I’ve got for now, because I’m tired & need to get to bed. Gramps has carpal tunnel surgery tomorrow on his other hand, & I’m driving him & Grammy. It’ll probably be a good five hours at good ol’ Grand View Hospital yet again! Oi.

OK ok sounds dramatic, but it is just that I got my first check from the bub yesterday, and it felt SO good. / RB has been a small part in a long and hard research round I have done over the last two years. / I am planing to get on the road with my band again, and that could easy end up taking two – three years. / So I am aiming for a web setup that sort of makes my art and music sales continue selling without me tending to it more than 4 – 6 hours a week (done on the move with a laptop). / The research I have done is to find out what is the best way to go about this. / RB turned out to be somewhat of a key component for my art sales in many ways, even though the sales I have had so fare hardly makes a dent in my economy. / But that is not the point, the point here is the many potentials RB represents both in marketing and in getting to know key persons that you can team up with to make way to a mutual goal, and in the process get to know more people to work with next time around

Hi, just wanted to explain myself. I am an old Punk…my children….get embarrassed by my stories…that I still listen to hardcore music both old and new. Their friends seem impressed with my record..ops .. CD collection. I do have to get my Cd’s back from both my daughter and my son’s. As I am now a very respectable teacher at a very private (public in UK) school…I teach art. I spent all night listening to Radio Caroline when I was staying in Holland. When I was going to teacher’s college I was the only Punk there..I spent all my weekends in Melbourne at the Ballroom, in St Kilda with my friends watching what we referred to as ” The Little Bands” and also lots of the early Australian and overseas Punk and alternative bands. I saw the likes of the Saints, Split ENZ, The Boys Next Door and later Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, INXS, The Clash, POL, The CURE, The Fall, John Cooper Clark to name but a few. I think I was the only trainee teacher amongst the group. I remember a movie Dogs In Space Richard Lowenstein -later being made based on the scene, parties, lifestyle and one of the little bands we saw all the time, as we had friends in the band The Ears…. oh such a long time ago….. Now my 19 yr old daughter is going out with a heavy metal guitarist…..I have yet to be allowed to attend a gig…..they have been touring interstate….but are back again… maybe soon…...I will bring the Camera and see if I can add to the site…..Did have some fun in London in the mid 80’s as well but that is another story. Cheers Lesley

Sadly the Rainbow hotel in fitzroy which is a Melbourne music institution which was built in 1872 is closing at the end of November, falling prey to developers who are putting up more apartments. Many a sunday night I have spent at this pub enjoying the sounds of soul funk band Grand Wazoo, sipping on an Ale and indulging in a sasauge sizzle in the beer garden. / Many a band has played there over the years with lots of memorabilia ligning the walls. I went there tonight to see the Cd release of Grand Wazoo’s lastest live album which was recorded at the rainbow in June and also to see the guest appearance of Jeff Duff, yes guys you all remember Jeff Duff from the band Kush and the heady days of countdown. What a fantastic night was had, if I had better footwear on and not my high heeled boots I would have followed the band and Jeff to their 1am gig at the Espy. Sad to see some of thes icons of Melbourne dissapear and aparments, pokie venues replace them.
