Wow, what a big weekend… It started with a band shoot, then a midsumma burlesque shoot where I stalked Adrian on his first real photography gig, then a gay pride march shoot and then I totally crashed into bed and today I feel really yuck (not hung over in case you were presuming, just bloody tired). Anyways, I have only had a few minutes to even look at my shots from the first two shoots. I’m really new to this concept of event photogrpahy. As in where people are relying on you to produce something more artistic than a happy snap. So here are a few of my shots from Saturday evening. Constructive criticism, comments, advice all very welcome. I want to learn! Here is the full gallery

  • The atmosphere of a show.

I want to start off by saying that I am not a fan of flash. I avoid using flash like the plague because I feel it ruins the atmosphere. Ambient lighting is much more attractive than images captured with flash, especially the usual pop up flash of most D-SLR cameras. Shooting bands in basements and garages has forced me to find ways of retaining some atmosphere, while still being able to get the clarity I need in my photos. Over the last couple months most of the local bands have to to expect great photos from me regardless of the lighting. I always meter first and get the white balance where I need it and ask that the bands that want photos taken keep the lights on for at least one song so that I can get some photos with available light. Time after time I find I like the atmosphere much more in the available light shots. The problem is bands tend to play in the dark, and when they don’t, the lighting is still miserably inadequate. Well, the pop up flash can be used to retain some of that atmosphere and appear almost as available light when used right. In the dark, the camera will strobe the flash to assist focusing. This is a good opportunity to preview something else. You can direct the light from your pop up flash very easily with your hand. The strobing will show you what areas you are shadowing with your hand and allow you to illuminate exactly what you want to. Try different positions and contortions with your hand to direct the flash light where you need it in different situations. Like where the flash will hit something in the foreground that you don’t want in the shot and cause the rest to be underexposed. Just cup your hand over the flash and force it to shadow that obstruction to eliminate it from the shot and create a more effective atmosphere. It can also help when you plan to do some post processing and make a certain subject the focus of an image.

I had the absolute pleasure of shooting Cathy Cavolo’s band on Saturday. We spent a while trudging through alleys in Kensington playing dress-ups, and later on, I shot the band performing at Hardimans Pub. Adrian Carmody the unbelievable talented photographer known for his unique ability to stay focused in mosh pits has turned his hand to philanthropy. No that’s not stamp collecting but giving money to those who need it for no other reason than well, they need it. He’s already joined the hall of fame by buying the world’s most expensive card / But oh no being a great bloke isn’t enough for our Adrian. He’s just become an awesome bloke by buying three more. Let me tell you what that means. It means people get a chance. A chance to be healed, nurtured and loved. A bit of heaven in hell. Congo and Rwanda are under fire people are suffering ‘cos they were born in the wrong part of the world. If you think $30 does nothing you’re wrong. It does everything if you consider love everything. And man can Adrian shoot great pics. Check out his stuff here but also on his website… His band shots are amazing. I know there’s lottsa band members out there in the bub. Seriously this is the guy who should be shooting your stuff. He manages light so well and captures emotion beautifully. This guy wreaks of talent, and soul. Thanks Adrian x That’s one more beer I owe…and yes, yes, yes John Robb (the originator of this idea) I owe you too!

After making friend with security she was allowed to sit side stage and watch from there with the rest of the photographers. We still had the usual first 3 songs no flash rule but we weren’t kicked out of the venue afterward which is rare for a stadium gig. Pair artwork with lyrics of favorite songs, individuals or groups. List in the forum 5-10 of your favorite bands and performers. It will be interesting to see how many of the members in our group share the same passion for a particular vocalist, song writer and/or band. I have paired several of my photographs with lyrics from some very talented artists including: Bob Dylan, Pink, Iron Maiden, Michael Jackson, Carly Simon, Billy Joel, Maria Muldaur, Doors, Cat Stevens, Elton John etc. I have a file of many lyrics that I will pair with photographs that fit the theme of my photographic image. Music is a universal language to be shared. I have observed some artists painting the lyrics of songs as well as CD covers, one of the most underestimated art forms. The winner of this challenge will win their choice of a $20 voucher from Red bubble, the book published by Red Bubble, “In The Moment” or your choice of any card of one of the members of our group. I want to solidify the group experience by supporting our members and selling their cards is very encouraging and reinforcing. My hope is that every member has a card sold during their membership in this group. Also future gifts will be donations to charities that afflict our members to promote research and more effective treatments for medical and psychological disorders. Please submit your art paired with lyrics from your favorite artists by May 15th.

I have six of their albums and the gig was after work hours. So, yeah…when Charlize Theron again proved noncommital on the whole romantic dinner thing, I decided to head on down to Regent Street, eventually settling on a position at least 50 metres away, K10D and 90mm f2.8 in tow (not ideal shooting conditions, but then again last time I tried to photograph U2 it was using a 3megapixel point-and-shoot from the halfway line of Stadium Australia). And since it was a free concert, so I was hardly going to say no! / It was a ‘surprise gig’ but the evidence was out there for anyone walking past BBC House that day that somethat was going to happen (and it wasn’t a Miley Cyrus concert….). / Adam Clayton and The Edge exit BBC Radio 2 less than an hour before their ‘surprise’ ‘mystery’ gig. / Three-quarters of a Bono leaves BBC Radio2. Thanks, dude with purple clipboard! / By way of background, U2 basically took over the BBC today – from interviews and a morning concert in front of 400 lucksters, to a TV show and more interviews during a drivetime broadcast. So when they started wiring the outside of BBC House with cables that stretched to the roof, only a couple of people were massively disappointed Coldplay weren’t doing a performance / “Why yes, we DO have a new album out”. (Though I’m not yet fully warmed to ‘Boots’, I think both ‘Breathe’ and ‘Magnificent’ are good tracks.) / No, BONO! Get away from The Edge!! (wait, that could be misconstrued…) / “You know the words, so everybody sing along!! Oh, come on… this album has been pirated and available on bittorrent for weeks, as if you haven’t illegally downloaded it already!“ / ‘Wait, what? The Ting-Tings and Taylor Swift also have new albums out? Damn… we may have timed this release badly..” / The crowd was approximately 5,000 people, and the BBC live coverage (which I enjoyed the next day) was excellent too. Best concert I’ve been to, based on the artist and the entry fee. / Bono noted the irony of somebody like him who is afraid of heights writing a song called ‘Vertigo’ and performing it on a building roof. Oh, great…what next… the band really weren’t lost when they wrote “Where the Streets have no Name”?? / The Edge also needs to get away from… the edge. / The band played three songs (‘Boots’ and ‘Magnificent’ from the new album, and ‘Vertigo’ from the prior one) then hurried back for a quick addional performance of ‘Beautiful Day’ before the crowd were asked to disperse. Or, I guess preferably, go camp outside the closest HMV til Monday when the album is released. / “Yeah, so… if you guys could all clear the road now, we can move our Bentleys before they get wheel-clamped…” Ah, London. It has its moments. And this was several. Oh,and a couple of hours before that I snapped Mr T leaving BBC Radio1. Somtimes you get your cake, and you get to eat it, and then Charlize Theron calls. Today, I scored 2 out of 3 and I’m not complaining! / Until nex time!

Hey there Guys & Red Bubblers…...... / As you know i’ve been spending much less time here recently and no I am not writing from beyond the grave, I am still very much alive! lol / Things have been a little busy for me here in Bournemouthville, the Southernest part of the coast in UK. / Recently I been working hard on band photography, a few private parties, and mainly promoting my company here. / i’ve had some really great news recently as i’ve been recommended through a new contact of mine here, and am going to do his friends Wedding in May. / So if one phonecall wasn’t enuff yesterday to stop me from jumping around like a flea all day, I also received another enquiry to do a Wedding just before this one. / Fingers crossed, that this person too, will acquire my services & be blessed on his Wedding Day with my smile, and professional approcah. / To be honest…..... / i’ve never done a wedding before, but have happily taken shots as a guest in the past & compiled a video for the couple, but this is going to be a major turning point in my career, and its alot of responsibilty. / I’m use to taking normal shots of people or candid shots of bands etc, but this is a special day for people & only one which can be remembered through the images taken, rather like a storybook, each picture depicting every emotion from family & friends. / I’m rather looking forward to this…......... / I’m sure I might be a little nervous on the day, but i work exceptionally well under pressure, and because the guest lists are quite small, will be quite a cosy wedding on both occassions. / So with a few Events coming up this year, and my persisting ambitious attittude to succeed in what I do, this year looks like it could be getting better for me. / After spending the past couple of years, building my portfolio, and trying most things, finally I am going onto better things. / I have also been approcahed by a well known band, to possibly cover their 4 day tour in the UK, and am now now waiting to hear back from them as they are touring in the USA currently. / I’ve also got alot of other things up my sleeve for this year, and so my website will keep displaying many different things, I love variety! / New friends are putting in good words with people for me, and slowly I am getting more noticed, so all is good in my world. / Hope everyone here is happy, and if you get a minute check out my latest pictures of a band which I photographed the other eve on my band photography page. / The band is called Lady Winwoods Maggot & they ROCK! / FFP Creative
