  • This image was featured on the Redbubble Home Page! Thanks Redbubble! Pastel painting on Kitty Wallis sanded pastel paper. From a photo shopped photographic reference shot I took of my daughter. My daughter and model dragged me along to an antiwar march in DC this past St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2007. Best parade I was ever in on the day! That march really influenced my work and “Lucy” was painted a month after the experience. The photo reference was taken at Kent State University when we were visiting my son for homecoming. My daughter was standing on the hill where the shootings had taken place in 1970, I saw the shot, and captured her as she really was, crazy Halloween top hat and the balloon she’d Christened “Tuesday” with a sharpie marker. I reversed the puffy white clouds in photo shop to create a smoky haze of “War Is Over” clouds. The white outline around the figure was a remnant of the photoshop effect. I liked the surreal quality of that so I kept it for the “LSD” Beatles factor. The piece is framed in an old 70’s frame and studded with plastic rhinestones. ;-) “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” Additional information from my myspace blog: I’ve been getting some questions about this piece, I suppose because it’s a bit of a departure for me. More surreal or psychedelic than my usual work. Part of that is intentional as a reflection of the nature of the Beatles tune which influenced the work. John Lennon always denied that the song referred to LSD, and was really inspired by Julian’s childish drawing of a girl flying in the sky. Appropriate that this pastel is inspired by my daughter’s personality. It shows her progression toward adulthood, which is the underlying theme of my White Album series. This work began as a candid snapshot of my artsy daughter at 16. We were visiting my son at Kent State U, Ohio, for Homecoming. She was really wearing the cheap top hat around campus that day, she had gotten it for her Halloween costume. The Kent Homecoming committee were passing out the balloons and she took one, and for some reason decided to name it “Tuesday” and wrote that on the balloon with a sharpie. It was a windy day with large puffy white clouds, and she was standing on the hill where the Kent State Massacre had occured. This is an important detail about my thought process for the piece, as the tragic event happened in May 1970 – the year the Beatles broke up, and around the time John Lennon began his life with Yoko and did the Baggism, Bed-In and “War Is Over” song and campaign. I saw the shot that day as she stood on the hill, and my daughter held the pose for just a moment. She hates when I take her photo – but she’s so damn quirky and cute I can’t resist! I got down low to have only the sky for a backdrop. Her expression is actually more resigned exasperation with me than anything deeper. Somehow her signature stoicism works. I played with the image in photoshop and liked the sky reversed, with darks where the whites had been. The blue sky turned the opposite on the color wheel, “marmalade” colored. The white outline is a remnant from the photoshop effect I was using, and since she was backlit in the original photo, I thought it was cool, and again, a bit surreal. The balloon was really blue, but the effect reversed that, too. It’s not meant to be realistic. I had just watched “John Lennon vs. the US” at the time and thought I’d add the words “War Is Over” to the balloon, as a flashback to the 1970’s and a hopeful premonition for today. “War is over Tuesday” may have worked as well ;) My daughter is an activist against the war and while she doesn’t like her likeness here, she does like the message. The flowers on the balloon could be a reference to “cellophane flowers of yellow and green towering over your head” but that didn’t occur to me til today :) My friends have been interpreting this piece in different ways. One wondered if the balloon is her hallucination. Another says the clouds are post-war colors. I like that. ~ A

  • Ah, if only it were possible to fly away hanging from a balloon. It would be awesome to get away from the daily chores that way!

  • Sales of this Design? – 1 sale so far :) / Flying Machine / by Karin Taylor / from the ‘Inspired Series’ / / Mixed Media / ink, chalk pastel, charcoal, acyrlic, mediums / silver, gold, bronze and rose metallic acrylics / adobe photoshop My most recent work, this piece was influenced by the ‘gliders’ in my family who have taken to the sky recently. My husband, my son and their friend Erich are all involved in a local gliding club…and always suggesting I paint an aeroplane lol I thought, there’s no way i can do that! / But i found a way, after lots of thinking on the subject to incorporate a sort of flying contraption i designed myself into this piece. My girl is onward bound and it’s semi-self portrait i guess you could say…altho most people don’t see the resemblance to me….she is a lot younger, perhaps how i would like to be thought of lol Also inspired by my lovely and ever patient friend Christine / a fabulous friend and textile artist, her threads and yarn and tactile things have affected me on an immense scale, so that all my work these days is imbued with these elements….although there is no actual wool or thread in the painting, i have used these as inspiration for her scarf and hair detail. The khaki overalls are what i wear when i’m painting, with a white singlet in summer, or a jumper in winter…...i am yet to find a hairdresser who could accomplish this hairstyle for me.. the little parrot represents conscience, a little voice that knows right from wrong….this is an idea loosely taken from a movie i saw a while ago ‘The Golden Compass’ I dedicate this painting to Christine, as she has listened to all my crazy ideas, and very carefully encourages me or points out things that may help, and i don’t know where i’d be without her…..thanx Chris :) Patchwork and patterns, repitition, daisies, journeys, serene expressions, genuity…..

  • This was done as a small “in between” thing while taking breaks from revision. My friend Coolness Bears (who has an account here but doesn’t actually make any art =P ) suggested I draw a teddybear on a balloon. So here it is! / As always, if any tweaks are needed, let me know! Kind of reminds me of my Freedom drawing (girl on a balloon), which I hadn’t thought about at first. Done from scratch in Illustrator. Small design available here. /

  • A composite. Clouds and balloon blended in Photoshop. Used HDR processing to achieve the deep contrasts and applied some sepia tone. Used flood to add the water and Terragen for the mountains. • Arrested Expansion is a symbolic scene that depicts a combination of self-excluding objects that might not be present in real life. Objects in the secluded room make the viewer feel claustrophobic and unreal, which might be compared to someone’s mental delusion based on a medical condition. Image is a mixture of photo stock with some 2D vectors, and 3D objects. Photoshop, 3ds max, Illustrator. / The most common cause of cardiac arrest is a heart rhythm disorder or arrhythmia called ventricular fibrillation (VF). The heart has a built-in electrical system. When a contraction happens, blood is pumped. But in ventricular fibrillation, the electrical signals that control the pumping of the heart suddenly become rapid and chaotic. As a result, the lower chambers of the heart, the ventricles, begin to quiver (fibrillate) instead of contract, and they can no longer pump blood from the heart to the rest of the body. If blood cannot flow to the brain, it becomes starved of oxygen, and the person loses consciousness in seconds. • I created the balloon from a picture I took of a plaque on a building in London, the teacup belongs to my wife (who is the woman in this) and I took a picture of it on our kitchen table. The rest of the stuff in this are my textures and designs applied to a scan of paper that was changed to blue in elements. The clouds are preset shapes in elements and the dress and dog are royaly-free cliparts from a couple old books I have that I scanned. I think this would make a lovely card (hint, hint!) / / The title is from the name of a Tori Amos song from her “American Doll Posse” album. Enjoy the momentary view captured here, wait sixty seconds and the entire scene changes ! from this angle of the field on a normal day the balloons are comming at me, but earlier the winds were opposite, then the calm came ! by this time they were all scattered ! gosh ! I even remember the words from the fellow next to me in a wheelchair, He had his Canon, with one of those extra long sport lenses, He said the Kids will love this one ! I asked their ages, he said 75 and 76 they couldn’t make it this year, a close family friend passed away ! Life happens! and there are Beautiful moments to share as well !
