This is a self portrait I did for a challenge on another site. It ended up winning second place and getting my highest score so far :-) It was really difficult to shoot. I was REALLY lucky to get this when the sun was showing because tihs took about 30-45 minutes of experimenting with how to light it and how to compose it before I got my 8 minute window between when the sun came out from behind the clouds and went behind the trees. It was REALLY difficult to get it so where my head was bellow the reflection of the mountain in the water so that i would have the orange hallow around my head….I actually had to balance my tripod on three round rocks to get my camera high enough to get it positioned that way. (this is a self portrait) Then I would CAREFULLY set the timer on the camera so as not to knock my camera into the water….really nerve wracking…and then run to the rock and pose myself. I basically had 5 tries at this and was really lucky to get it. I feel like my outfit doesn’t match the surroundings but I couldn’t think of a color to change it to to make it match. Oh well. I still really like this photo, and its nice to finally do a self portrait again.

  • Photographic based digital montage, 2007 (no 2 from series of 3 re-worked). Shot two seperate models & P/S combined them. I also draw in & enhanced part of the headpeice, the body, the dress, added a fringe to the face, hid the eyes, made the features more angular, blew up the lips, created cheekbones, reworked the branches, filtered wallpaper effects, extended the chandelier, added lacework/flower elements, desaturated the lot & added a sepia tone. Approximately 50 Photoshop layers.

  • ALL PROCEEDS DONATED TO PHOENIX APPEAL The hand has been a universal motif since ancient times, whether it be a signature, greeting, protective device or healing tool. I’ve been working on a series depicting hands. Inspired by vision, they are few and far apart and like dreams will not be forced or summoned. The painting manifests completed in my mind, every layer of detail woven into the next in the manner of a tapestry; every element in the design holding meaning. When this happens I know its time to get in the studio and paint before the image loses potency and fades away. The hands in these paintings are my own and painted life size. They are meant to be expereinced not only as art, but as a focusing tool. By placing your own hand upon the image and concentrating on the colors and undualting lines, what they represent, and endevoring to sense this within your own fingertips and palms, the mind is directed toward awareness. Occupied, it ceases its chatter and allows you to be directly in the body, in the present moment rather than thought – traveling to the chores and concerns of the future or dwelling in a remembered past . Just focus on feeling the colors and what they symbolize to yourself and imagine pulling this sensation into the hand, to the heart and throughout the body. Then radiate it outward. Dont direct or worry about where its going anymore than the sun and stars concern themselves with where their light shines. Just focus on the sensation. In time you’ll be able to do this practice without a painting. Its a form of cleansing, washing away the dust and debris of the road. This painting itself is a feminine one, representing healer and healing. It was inspired by a friend who practices therapeutic massage, but the modality is not important here. This image is not only about the desire to heal others and self, but the drive and ability as well. I’ve written a few of my notes below. In many cultures butterflies are associated with the unfettered spirit, soul, femininity, and all that is beautiful and ephemeral. Lakota teachings say that butterflies flutter near girls and women, often landing on their shoulders, and convey knowledge regarding the location, harvesting, preparation and applications of botanicals. For this reason the monarch butterfly, so abundant on the prairie, seemed an ideal metaphor to convey the traditional concept of healing, healer, and wellness. The spots are patterned after the border of a monarch’s wing, symbolizing the Lakota woman’s affinity with butterfly medicine, but have other meanings as well. They are stars and fireflies in the night skies of summer, yin to sun’s yang , countering heat, dryness and light with cool, moist darkness. This imagery came one day as I held my hand before the sun, studying the way its shape was cast into deep shadow, almost a silhouette. I could feel the coolness in its shade. The sun flashed between my parted fingers and for a few moments afterward miniature suns danced across my field of vision, even when looking into the shadow of my hand. The two fingers glowing blue at the tips represent healing energy transferred by healer to client. This blue light is positive intention, conscious purpose, the place from which a healer draws power and luminous sky washed clean and purified by summer thunderstorms. The hand is dark (yin), it greets and touches the sun, source of warmth and light (yang). The small blue circle in the palm of hand is the void from which power is drawn. It is infinite, like the sky above. The swirling circle of orange is inspired by the patterns on a monarch’s wing, representing movement, new life, the birthing process, creation. There’s more, but this exerpt provides an idea of my intent. Whats more important is the way it resonates with you. Text copyright Helena Nelson -Reed. Please do not use without written permission.

  • Lady of the Wildwood portrays the second, mother aspect of the Great mother (virgin, mother, crone) and is based on ancient Celtic myth and spirituality. When creating her I incorporated an alchemical formula for gold (wholeness and balance), a form of blessing on anyone who studies the image and the places where she hangs. Most of the elements represent images of alchemical symbols used during the early Dark Ages. Her consort is the Stag King, another painitng on my Red Bubble page. Here’s a portion of the material I’ve written about her: “I am the feminine spirit of the wildwood; past, present, and future. I sprout the fertile acorn, guard the pregnant doe heavy with fawn, and personify life energy emanating from the primordial forest itself. Withing my womb you see the Royal Child, my future dancing baby. We represent a visual doorway opening into the circle: embrace the poetry of my closed system in which all is connected, the great web of creation is my being. Nothing is simply a thing; all has life and properties of its own. Beware; don’t make the mistake of assuming this doesn’t exist. Think of the pentagram and its five points: the elements of earth, water, fire, air and the fifth essence, ether (the quint – essence); life quality made by a sentient, universal creative force. Pale and luminous against deep forest shadows, I am light itself, ruling the kingdoms of nature. My heart glows with life, rosy with health. Within the shadows are my creatures, my beloved hares and deer, birds and salamanders, all composed of graceful, vine – like patterns. This represents their wild environment and interconnectedness. You can understand me on many levels, all true, for I represent Queen of Fairy, the feminine energy of the wild and untamed wood. The Lord of the Wildwood, masculine energy perfected and personified, is my consort. I am the goddess in her guise as Earth Mother and protect the feral and freeborn. I am metaphor and allegory for certain truths, yet just as easily convey a personal meaning only you understand”. Text and image copyright Helena Nelson-Reed. • Photographic based digital montage, 2007 (1 from series of 6 – redesigned from 2004/5 Japanese Series). Re-worked combining two from the series. I shot the tree, flowers & combined them in P/S with drawn elements & filtered the lot. Approximately 50 Photoshop layers. Generally I tire of my artwork yet still love this series to this day.

  • Photographic based digital montage – Feb, 2008. Created over several hrs…2 nights this week (suffering from concussion) from an accidental fall over the wk’end. Photoshop montage combining digital shots of jewels, scanned samples of vintage style wallpaper and added drawn elements. Fifty layers retouched, blended, filtered, colour & tonal curve adjusted. I’m considering using the design as a furniture (upholstering) velvety/suede fabric for a small round bedroom foot stool.

  • Pencil and dry brush watercolor on Bristol board. / The original story is barely more than a mention in another, more important tale. All we know its that the affair was brief and couple soon parted. So it is with deities and fairie folk every where, or there’d be no stories about their adventures and entanglements. The few lines caught my attention because of the properties each deity personifies. Druantia, the Fir Tree goddess and mother of the Ogham, is independent, strong willed, free spirited, nurturing and passionate. Aengus Og shares these characteristics, and is a reputed King of Fairie (as well as deity) – but also a gentle and considerate lover. On the simplest level this is a nice little story for a painting. On the second level it demonstrates masculine and feminine energies personified and united in harmony. On the third level its about Soul reuniting with the Beloved, the Source. Their mythic roles, at the end of this paragraph, will illustrate why and how. The following verse describes their first meeting, in Druantia’s words. “Deep within my forest I see him, standing beneath the tall silent firs, and I sing out! Hearing my voice, Aengus Og, maker of sweet music, protector of lovers, is curious, and drawing near, replies by plucking an irresistible invitation upon his golden harp. Thus we strangers approach one another, weaving a spell both wild and sweet; the perfect binding of wisdom and beauty, form and substance. Overcoming strangeness we become familiar, knowing one another amidst slippery, cool needles and wild herbs. We each savor the other’s fragrance, mingled with that of spicy pine, damp earth, and a myriad of plants and blossoms. We whisper, I in the green, rustling tongue of trees, Aengus with tender messages delivered by tiny magical birds, formed by his sweet kisses and warm, moist breath. The perfect union; the guardian and healer of souls and the mistress of transmigrating souls, those spirits spiraling downward from human body into plant, animal, and stone form. DRUANTIA (Celtic, British) Queen of the Druids, mother of the tree calendar, fir tree goddess. Fertility, passion sexual activities, trees, protection, knowledge, creativity. Also she’s the goddess responsible for the transmigration of souls through lower animal forms, plants and inanimate objects. She is also connected with the oak (research Irish, Scotch, Welsh, Breton, Gaulish root words for Druantia and druid) ANGHUS OG (Celtic, British… several versions of this name) God of youth, physical perfection, beauty, creativity, protector of lovers, god of fatal love, guardian and healer of souls, associated with musicians and songbirds. An accomplished musician, he owns a beautiful golden harp upon which he plays irresistibly sweet music, his kisses turn into birds carrying messages. Has a fairy palace on the Boyne and is of the Tuatha De Dunaan. Text and Image copyright 2006 Helena Nelson Reed. Please do not use without written permission.

  • been reading about tribal child raising and the benefits, and we know I like birds… I began this art as abstract patterns, bubbles of pattern that transformed when I realised by putting a ‘fork in the road’ to the concentric circles, that I created an eye and beak. Before that, it could’ve been shown either way up. also, it transformed from earthy brown colours, to a colourful bird. ‘Is it art? ‘my teacher used to always question. He’s not here now. He’s just asking the question still! in my head! I like it-it’s bright, colouful and alive.
