  • A pastel painting of one on the sculptures in the sculture park called the living desert out from Broken Hill. This was from a very qiick drawing I did as the sun was setting on a red coloured sky reflecting onto the vast plains turning everything red, there was still a lot of red smoke around from the bush fires,As a balmy breeze gently drifted through the beautiful scene, a piper played some beautiful Scottish laments, then the plane appeared glinting silver with a sliver vapour trail behind.Magical.

The office and workshop of William Sinclair & Son, bagpipe makers since 1933. I had probably passed by this door and window a thousand times before it occurred to me to take the snapshot and looked up the history of it. William Sinclair & Son have been professional bagpipe makers since 1933. William Sinclair Senior’s father Alexander Sinclair made the first set of pipes on a foot-treadle lathe with the pedal power provided by his son: by trade William Sinclair Senior was a stone-hewer and his son William was a joiner, but there was a long family tradition connected with the pipes – Alexander Sinclair taught his sons with his other students of the pipes, and William Sinclair Senior was Pipe Major of the Leith Celtic Pipe Band, the Broxburn Pipe Band and the 5th Volunteer Edinburgh Rifles. He was also Pipe Major of the Boys Brigade in Edinburgh. (The old Boys Brigade headquarters is just up Ferry Road from 1 Madeira Street.) During a stone-hewer’s strike William Senior made reeds for the pipes to bring in money: in the 1926 General Strike, William Junior left the building trade to become a professional Bagpipe Maker, and in 1933, the firm of William Sinclair and Son set up shop. And they’re still trading today.

  • mournful bagpipes
    by kathleen

    US$3.99–US$106.40

in an effort to avoid traffic I went to take photos at the biggest cemetery in town… i got out of the car and heard the pipes so I followed… it was eerie as the wind was billowing on the top of the hill and the gray clouds were all around… the only thing to have made this photographic moment better would be a kilt… thanks to chris for the impromptu performance, when I asked him to play for the camera, he asked, “something mournful or something cheerful…” of course I said mournful please… as if there was another option!

  • PLEASE VIEW LARGER FOR DETAIL Neston Female Society The society was founded in 1814 when the ladies of Neston formed a co-operative named Neston Female Friendly Society. / It was formed to enable all the ladies, left at home with their children, to help each other out in times of hardship while the men folk were away fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. / The original charter is on display at Neston Parish Church although in 2003 the society had to drop the word ‘friendly’ from the title, due to the increasing costs charged by the Financial Services Authority which was costing the society up to £2,000 per year. / The society’s motto was, and still is, ‘Bear ye one another’s burdens’. / The motto says it all. Help one another. The society is open to all females from the age of fifteen, and all members pay a modest annual fee of £2.00 each. / The society operates a modest scheme to the members which consists of a: / Members’ sickness benefit / Members’ maternity benefit who have children in wedlock / Members death grant / These benefits are given with the discretion of the committee. The committee consists of 6 female members, and the secretary, traditionally, must be male. The society also has 3 trustees. / The main focal point of the society is its traditional ‘Ladies Day Walk’ which takes place on the first Thursday in June and has done, annually, apart from the war years. / It culminates with a procession of the members, clergy, mayor/mayoress and invited dignitaries. It departs from the Malt Shovel car park, proceeds down the High Street and stops for a service at Neston Parish Church. / After the service at the church, the procession makes it away, via church lane and Parkgate Road, to gather around Neston Cross for a short service and the blessing from clergy. It then makes its way down High Street, Bridge St, Chester Road, to Neston Civic Hall for tea and the Annual General Meeting. A truly colourful day is enjoyed by everyone. / The society has gone from strength to strength and attracts around 200 children walking along with the society members to celebrate the annual Neston Ladies Day. The colourful anniversary walk keeps the society in the public eye and mind. They are led by a band. This year (2008) it was a bagpipe band. The kilts added even more colour. Brightly dressed women and girls form the long procession which makes its way down the High Street to the Parish Church. In their hands they carry the same white staves that are carried at funerals, but instead of black crepe they are garlanded with flowers and ribbons. / Traditionally the flowers are gathered from the members own gardens. Red peonies, which are at their best in the Neston area during the early part of June, have become such a feature of the occasion that they are known locally as Ladies Day flowers. Before the procession two stalwarts bear the society’s 7ft. square banner with its motif of clasped hands and text from St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians, “Bear Ye One Another’s Burdens.” The Mayor in his robes and chain of office, members of the local clergy and many other local dignitaries walk as the guests of the society. Inside the church the scene is as colourful as that in the High Street, with flowers packed onto every ledge that will hold them. Before taking their seats the members of the society stand their staves in the umbrella holders at the end of the pews, transforming the aisles into avenues of flowers. Within recent years, however, the society has assumed an additional importance, it is once more unique. All the other female friendly societies in the country have been disbanded, rendered obsolete by the welfare state. Only the ladies of Neston, conscious of their responsibilities as the guardians of a tradition, walk in the footsteps of the pioneers of 1814.

  • Tribe & Diatribe
    by Ellcott

    US$17.10–US$91.20

In this work I have contrasted two traditions: / – the old Scottish tribal tradition … with an essentially filial (family) foundation, and / – the paintings background… the modernist minimalist tradition of De Stijl… an essentially intellectualist tradition founded more in diatribe.
