Hawk aircraft of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team – The Red Arrows
The British Royal Air Force Red Arrows displaying some of their signature 9 ship formation flying skills. This image was recently taken during a rare US apparence at the Airpower Over Hampton Roads airshow in Langley, VA.
This is a three exposure stitich of a RAF Red Arrow. It is on display today and tomorrow as part of the Sunderland Airshow 2008. Unfortunately, due to bad fog along the coast, amidst glorious sunshine and humidity, most of the displays have cancelled. Perhaps tomorrow I may be able to bring you more images, weather permitting!

The Red Arrows do not use front-line aircraft because of operating costs. The team uses the RAF’s advanced jet trainer, the BAE Hawk T1A. While the Hawk is very basic compared to the much more modern Eurofighter Typhoon, it is still fast enough and very manoeuvrable, ideal for low-altitude aerobatics. The plane also does not have a sat nav or radar or onboard computer. The Red Arrows normally cruise at 360 knots (one nautical mile every 10 seconds). Statistics Wing span: 9.39 m Length: 11.85 m Height: 4.0 m Maximum speed sea level: 800 mph (1,037 km/h) Maximum altitude: 48,000 ft (15,900 m) Empty weight: 8,000 lb (3,630 kg) Maximum weight: 18,390 lb (8,330 kg) Powerplant: one Rolls-Royce Adour Mk 151 Thrust: 5,200 lbf (23 kN)
The Red Arrows are renowned throughout the world as ambassadors for both the Royal Air Force and the United Kingdom. Since the Team was officially formed in 1965, the Red Arrows have completed over 4,000 displays in 53 countries. The Red Arrows’ reputation is built on the commitment and professionalism, combined with Royal Air Force skills, training and equipment. Many of the Red Arrows’ pilots and support staff have recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq and many will be temporarily detached on operations overseas during their time with the Red Arrows.
