After hearing a number of so-called ‘horror stories’ from friends regarding the loss of all their ‘most treasured and irreplaceable data’, I am writing this little entry (in a hurry) to assist those who store any information or data on their computers – and have no back up system If you lose your data on your computer – do not blame the computer or operating system. Not having a secure backup system is akin to leaving your photo albums at the train station and blaming the album when someone walks off with it. As simple as that. There is no excuse for bad backup practices these days – the information is readily available. If you wait till you lose your precious data before doing something about it – well, blame yourself. Back up systems, do’s and don’ts In general Anything stored on Windows in a ‘My’ folder or on the ‘desktop’ is dependent on the operating system. If Windows needs to be reinstalled, your data is no longer accessible – these places are the WORST possible place for anything that is important. Hard disk drives are one of the worst mediums for important and irreplaceable data. They are magnetic, mechanical and electrical. Any of these have a failure, and your data will cost many thousands of dollars to recover. Backing up your data can be done in numerous ways of varying security, complexity and hassle. The choice is yours – make it wisely, and accept responsibility for your choice. DVD/CD – regular backups. / Pros – safer medium. Not too expensive. / Cons – a bloody hassle with the size of data files. Can be slow. Regular/scheduled back-ups to an internal Hdd. / A spare Hdd in your machine which is larger enough to hold all your important data. Make scheduled/regular backups to it. / Pros – easy, relatively inexpensive, fast / Cons – hdd is in same physical shell as original data. If your Pc is stolen, so is your backup. Does not protect from things like fire, flood, etc. Reliant on your PCs power supply. External hdd / Pros – alternate physical unit – usually will not be damaged by your PC’s power supply going ‘pop’. Relatively inexpensive. Fast / Cons – external units tend to overheat quite easily. Physical unit is close to original data, and can suffer same physical damage. Depending on the method used to connect to your PC – can be slower then an internal drive. Raid arrays / Raid0 = no redundancy. Forget it. / Raid1 = mirrored drives (at least 2). 2 (or more) drives are seen as 1 by the OS, and data is replicated across both. This covers you from 1 drive failure. / Raid5/6/1+0/0+1/X – this is information your either know, or need a professional for. Online backups / Pros – off site storage – safest. / Cons – slow, expensive. A good middle-of-the-road system – for data that will hurt if you lose it, but not kill you: External RAID1 unit, under your desk, with an active fan cooling it. / Scheduled automatic+user backups of ALL important data. / There is software that will easily do this for you, like Synctoy. / Can be connected via firewire, usb, or eSata. / Nothing stored to your ‘MY’ folders. / Copy your most important data to dvds/cds and store them at a friend/relative. A 500gb hdd costs around $150. 2 = $300 / A Raid1 enclosure can be had for around $200. / That’s $500 for this system. / Smaller hdds are much less expensive. An 80gb hdd is around $50. If your internal hdd dies – it will cost you thousands of dollars to have it restored by professionals – and it is the kind of thing that only professionals can do. So – in short – be informed, treat your data carefully. Don’t blame computers for your neglect. Ask if anything does not make sense. Edit: / Any computer repair store that you are likely to take your machine to – will not safe guard your data. The first thing that most repairers do when they get your machine, is format your drive, or reinstall the operating system.
I was going to give all the details of each part of the ‘wet windows’ series. But alas, [stuff] happens. (sigh) A few months ago, one of my two very old desktop computers died a sudden and painless death. It and I had been sharing electricity for 6 years and it took the brunt of my computer learning on the chin/circuit board. I found out what jumpers were by adding multiple disk drives, upgrading over and over again but needing to guess where to put those darn little plastic thingies every single time. We went thru Windows Service Packs and their perils. We survived without even one serious infection thanks to Zone Alarm and FIVE (yes, I know) virus and spyware programs. And we lived the the Dark Days when I used to (gasp!) surf the web for freebies. Then click and silence. I’m not saying ‘goodbye’ yet tho. Anybody know how to install Linux? On Sunday, the second desktop computer followed the first to that place wherever dead computer brains go. It’s usually like that in real life when a partner dies but I guess computers feel some sort of bond too. These two should have since they shared a keyboard, mouse, and monitor for a pile of years. LOL! I’m not crying – much. I have someone anal retentive safety habits so I know my back-up habits were at least ‘upper colonic’. About 80% of my files were safely backed up, which means 20% are history without paying someone serious bucks to recover them. Not gonna happen. Two things bring water to my eyes. One is the lost programs. Some of them are impossible to replace like DVD X Copy Deluxe. I purchased it legally about a heartbeat before the Feds said it was illegal and yanked it. Unfortunately, it must be activated by an online computer that no longer exists so the legal disk is worth as much as a coaster with a hole in it. Actually, that’s what it is but that’s beside the point. Number two of the eye-wetters is all of the ‘wet window’ files went with the hard drive into Hard Drive Hell. They were in there to be archived in the external hard drive when the system crashed. I ALWAYS check my files when transferring them from place to place, making sure they arrive safely. They did. But before I got them into the external drive, I erased them on the SD card from the Nikon because I was going out on another shoot and didn’t want to “risk them in the camera”. Bad idea. Hard lesson. Oh well. This shot was taken using the information I saved to get the first shot accepted by the camera and learning groups in Red Bubble. As a testament to my documentation, it worked on another day, another lighting, and in a slight drizzle where I covered the camera with a hand-held shield and took the shot anyway. Woo hoo! However, all the previous work – except for the single shot I uploaded immediately – is lost. In fact, Red Bubble is the ONLY place where “wet window one” exists as there is no longer a master. LOL! “wet window two” was fun and I will redo the entire series because it was both educational for me and fun. But you’re gonna have to wait a while longer for the rest of them cuz it’s about 20 degrees here so even if it doesn’t rain/snow/hail, my happy ass ain’t gonna do it yet. :-D I’m skipping all the Nikon D80 details this time so sue me. Hehehehe! PS I goofed setting the D80 for black and white so Corel did the honours. ;-) PPS I really like this shot as well as the other so I’m giving it away ‘at cost’ for anyone who wants it. PPPS If you read this far, you are also going to be eligible for a end-of-year gift: December 20th to December 25th, ALL art on my front page will be available at Red Bubble’s cost, or whatever Red Bubble charges for what you want. Some of the art will be my best work and, if you’re really a fan of mine, Bmail me and maybe your request will make the front page too. :-D This is a personal ‘thank you’ to all you fans & good friends who have made my Red Bubble experience such a fantastic set of months. And yes, not even one year has passed and I’m just shy of 30,000 views of my art. :-D There is no other place on the planet that can offer a “rookie photographer” exposure like that. :-O Bless you all and thank you once again! Lenny

Some months ago I purchased an external harddrive for my laptop, in order to backup my important data including most of my digital images. Then, to cut a few steps from my post processing steps, I started working on my images directly from the external backup drive. Now I cannot access this 4 month old drive, get various different errors and cannot access my data. I’m extremely sad over the 1200 images I took during my recent trip to Europe to see my family. Although I have not given up on retrieving this data somehow, please do not make the same mistake I did. If you are using a harddrive to backup your data, you may want to buy another one to backup the backup onto. I’m very very sad over this, thought I would vent and hope this does not happen to you.

Going on a long holiday can bring a lot of photographic opportunities. The thing is that if you also take one of the new breed of 20+ megapixel cameras like the Canon 5D mk2 then you have to think of a way to managing all that data you’ll generate. Thus I have packed some travel companions as shown below. HP 2140 netbook This is the business level of HP netbook offerings. The regular consumer level HP netbook has a plastic case and fairly small 60GB HDD. This 2140 version is a little more expensive but comes with a more robust, and sexy, aluminium case and a 160 GB HDD. / So far it has been very useful and more than capable of handling the several GB data generated each day. Unfortunately the slightly low 10 inch screen resolution although all right for web surfing can stymie the use of software like Photoshop or Canon DPP – they both need 1024×768 where the screen is 1024×576. Otherwise the LED backlit screen has reasonable colour fidelity. / For connectivity HP has two USB ports, an express card slot, a network port, wireless LAN and an SD card reader amongst other things. Ideally an additional USB port would be useful. / To do basic image stuff I’ve loaded Irfanview which handles basic image manipulation and opens RAW files and allows me to post some reasonable looking stuff here on the Bubble. Alas all the HDR and careful manipulation has to wait until a rendezvous with a bigger and better screen on a regular PC. / Other software includes WiFi detecting software, MS office, VLC media player and Skype (which can use the built in web cam) Sandisk Extreme Card reader When Dealing with large cards you need a good high speed reader so you don’‘t spend your time in a hotel room watching a progress bar. I use this Sandisk USB2 based one. File transfer is pretty quick and helps to doesn’t tie up much time. / Interesting note not all Sandisk readers are as good as this one. You do pay for what you get – this isn’t the cheapest version around. It reads both CF and SD card formats. Seagate Freeagent Go 320GB This is a little (using a 2.5 inch notebook hard disk) external drive does a great job of keeping a copy of the images safe in case bad things happen while on the road. The drive doesn’t need additional power which is very useful. / The other advantage is that the drive comes with easy to use backup and sync software. Options include the ability to encrypt the data on the drive. / For the fashion conscious the drive comes in a number of colours. For the geek conscious you can get capacities up to 500GB.

Hi everyone, I haven’t been able to update my gallery as I reformatted the computer and had a huge scare! Thanks to Windows’ inability to recognise large hard drives by default, it wiped out the partition data on my recent photos – roughly 12 months worth. I’ve been trying to restore it for the past few days and finally making progress on it. This little (yet major) scare has made me ponder more seriously about backups since hard drives and external enclosures are fairly cheap nowadays. I hope everyone has a backup procedure of some sort particularly of recent work! Cheers, Wayne

Thought I’d add this to my journal as a reminder as well. Just a reminder to all. Backup your images. I back them up twice. Since I have a laptop with a C and D drive I back up to the D drive, and make a back up on an external drive. After being in the computer industry for 40 years, I can’t stress this enough. Data loss can be costly. Cheers. G.

I can’t believe it. I was re-arranging my stuff and then zap … they are all gone … empty. I looked everywhere … EVERYWHERE … tmp files, recycle bin … nothing nothing nothing … I almost cried … almost and you know why almost and not really? Because I did a BACKUP of everything last night before I went to bed. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this CD. It’s all there and restored to it’s proper place. All that work. OMG … if I hadn’t done a backup I would have been totally devastated! People please please please BACKUP YOUR WORK NOW!!!! I cannot stress this enough. Too much work is put into these pieces of ours to afford to lose to some computer glitch or stupid click of a mouse or storm power surge or anything.

Well yesterday I went and bought a 500gb external hard drive. My photos are starting to fill up my internal hard drive so I plan to move them all onto the external drive and take them off the PC. I also plan to start burning to DVD (something I haven’t done) as a second copy. I bought quite a few blank DVD’s yesterday as well a good storage box to keep them from the light and extreme temperature fluctuations. I have been doing some reading this morning about backing them up and wondered if perhaps I should buy another external drive purely to back up the first external drive. So in effect I take them off the camera onto the first external drive, then back that drive up onto another as well as backing up to DVD. I plan to disconnect the drive the hard drive when not in use. I have already lost one computer to lightning striking the house, so if it’s not connected to the computer I hopefully wouldn’t lose it too if god forbid it happens again. Does anyone have any advice about whether I should buy a second drive purely to back up the first, or will the one I’ve bought and DVD copies be enough?

Awhile back ago I had decided which camera I wanted, a Canon Rebel XTI. Have a Canon Rebel G from many years ago which I intend to sell because we have moved into the digital age. So i’ve been doing some shopping and was quite suprised. Now camera shops to me have always had the reputation of being pricey but giving you good service. I figured with the way today’s economy is taking a downturn and people are spending less that all stores are suffering, including the camera shops. Yesterday I went in to a dealer and asked if he had the model I was looking for. “Yeah, LAST one” (isn’t that what they always say?). They didn’t sell the body only and wouldn’t budge in the price. What’s the point of going to the shop if I can buy it cheaper online and not even have to pay sales tax?? I don’t see how they stay in business. So i decided to take the plunge, i’ve been excited about it for quite sometime now because I miss using my old SLR but was equally excited with my Canon A620 because of all the new features and being digital. When i tally up the total including the lens and battery charger it’s over 1K! That my friends, I can honestly say, will be the most money i’ve ever spent on myself. I’m serious (cars don’t count…and even there i’m very cheap..lol) So i’ve got the items looming in my sales cart, nervous about pushing that button to buy because of the coming christmas season and all the other spending that i’ll be doing. This means i’ve had to spend moderately. But I am excited! I am hoping and wondering if my old camera filters and lens cap will fit on my new lens, that will save me some money. Seems like they would be I just don’t know Which also got me to thinking, as i’ve been taking more pictures. Currently I try and frequently back up my photos to a CD. I don’t trust having them stored on the PC simply because these computers ALWAYS crash at some point and all data is lost forever. How do you back-up your photography? Do you have multiple methods/sources? I’ve seen online storage sites, some you pay and some you don’t. But is this ideal, can others access or download your photographs? Please share, i need some guidance to make sure that i’m properly storing my photos so i don’t end up losing them due to modern technology. Thanks and happy photo taking!

Lost all my backup files … external HD crashed .. x( Only few that already been backed up to DVD. I’m actually in the process of make some back ups to DVD in recent days. ARGH!! I’ve lost all the important files, including my honeymoon photos with my wife in Bali last January. And all other works. Lesson learn. BTW, is there any way I can download my own high res file that I’ve uploaded in RB? Thanks. Regards, / Sidqie. Sick and Stressed Out.

So, stupid me didn’t backup my hard drive, and when my power supply decided it was time to go bye-bye, and take my motherboard along for the ride, I was forced to go and see the sleazy local computer guy who I swore I would never go to after he buggered up my last computer. But hey, he’s cheap, and I didn’t have the cash for a super computer, so he was my last resort. I picked it up today, after 2 weeks of digital nothingness, and he assured me that everything would be just as it was. I was most worried about my art files, and the programs I use to make them. Well, for some stupid reason, he decided that the 10+Gig Poser folder wasn’t needed, and he didn’t think much of the Photoshop one either, so he killed them, along with all my other programs, security, bookmarks, and all my settings. I am very unimpressed, but it’s my fault really. I should have backed up my computer more often (or at all). You would think I’d have learned my lesson since this has already happened twice so far. Me feeling very stupid.

No, not about the John Edwards scandal. About archival CDs and DVDs. This is a bit of information that I got from my workshop last week. I’ve always been good about backing up my work. Usually, I burn two discs and store them in different places. My workshop teacher says that this is not good enough. First, one of the saves needs to be to an external hard drive. The second save needs to be to an archival gold CD or DVD. These do not come cheaply as they cost more than a dollar apiece. You also need a special pen to write on them as Sharpies will eat through the discs over time. These discs are supposed to be good for 100 to 400 years. Today, I’m madly copying old files to the new CDs. It’s a good process as I’m also getting rid of crap that I’ll never want to see again, but backed up when I didn’t have all the skill that I have now.
