  • A brief peaceful respite in a crowded Dublin Shopping Mall.

  • December 2007, I was asked by friends, who were expecting their first child out here in Riyadh to capture the pregnancy in my own unique way… A trip out to the desert followed and the rest, as they say, is history. Nearly 6 months after the arrival of little Kennedy, we were back out at the desert yesterday re-shooting, plus One! With searing temperatures reaching into the 40s first thing in the morning over here in summer, this was a shoot that lasted all of 15 minutes… I’ve never clicked so furiously at my shutter and bare feet have never gotten so hot!

A combination of 2 public domain photos, 2 brushes, and a rather unpleasant chapter of my life that I only recently realized I had never before expressed in my art. The idea came from the Pensieve concept from the Harry Potter series, in which a person can return and view their own memories from an external point of view. (The figure in the foreground on the left actually looks like me, which I found a bit creepy, but fitting nonetheless.)

  • Cigarettes contain about 4000 toxic chemicals in them (scary huh!) and every time that you inhale you are bringing them into your body. They reach the baby through the placenta and are also very toxic for your baby. The main problem is that smoking damages the blood vessels (which is the reason it can cause heart attacks and stokes) and therefore harm the blood vessels of the baby and the placenta. The longer you smoke the more damage it does to the placenta and the more likely it is that your baby will be starving for food and oxygen. This the reason that many babies of smokers are smaller and stressed, and can be born prematurely. Heavy smoking can cause such damage to the placenta that it becomes detached from your uterine wall and cause the death of your baby (and serious risk for you too). In fact smoking is estimated to be responsible for around 10% of all perinatal infant deaths. Another major concern is that the baby grows addicted to the nicotine chemical. While the brain is developing in the third trimester studies have shown a link between smoking late in pregnancy and attention deficit disorder (ADD) and other learning disabilities. While the link is not yet conclusive, it is probably wise to avoid risking your baby’s brain to nicotine to be on the safe side. -prismacolor color pencils / on recycle paper

  • There is a great challenge with drawing white animals. I’d been thinking about the polar bear for a while, then one of my reference photos spoke to me. I added the cub and the icy background. This will be the first in a series of mother/baby drawings. Polar bears are still listed as a “vulnerable” species. Melting polar ice makes it harder for the bears to find food. Charcoal on Strathmore smooth bristol paper, 17”x14”, 2009.

  • Acrylic on canvas textured oil painting paper. Standard A4 size. I have not been able to stop thinking about the apparitions of Our Holy Mother in Egypt this week. I saw the videos of them last night and was totally and utterly overjoyed to the core of my being. I prayed to Her, thanked Her for this GREAT miracle of Her presence and thanked Her for the hundreds of miracles Her presence has already made happen. I LOVE YOU HOLY MOTHER and I LOVE YOUR SON! Rejoice all people for our faith is REAL! I had some problems with this in balancing the colours and trying my best to make it flow without becoming too busy. I really hope I was able to succeed in that and that I was able to portray a more impressionistic, vibrant and moving tribute to the Adoration of Jesus our Saviour, His Holy Mother and the Archangel Gabriel. I’m not sure why I felt compelled to put St Gabriel in the image of the Adoration of the baby Jesus but I felt moved to include him seeing as how he was the one who appeared to Mary at the Annunciation. / /
