I saw this woman as i wandered through a Rwandan hospital. There, in the stark hospital room, she sat admiring this tiny creature with such love and gentleness. Her contentment of knowing that this tiny baby was hers. / I could not resist but to capture it.

Its broad, black stripes are closely spaced and often doubled. Unlike the Siberian tiger, it has striped forelegs. Sumatran tigers are the smallest tiger subspecies. Males average 2.4 meters (8 feet) in length from head to tail and weigh about 120 kilograms (264 pounds). Females measure approximately 2.2 meters (7 feet) in length and weigh about 90 kilograms (198 pounds). Distribution: The Sumatran tiger is found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in habitat that ranges from lowland forest to submontain and montain forest with some peat-moss forest. Biology: The Sumatran tiger eats wild pig, big deer (called rusa), and small deer (called muntjak or barking deer). The specific range size of this tiger is not know, however the population density is approximately 4–5 adult tigers/100 km 2 (39 mile 2) in optimal lowland rainforest. As elevation increases through submontain and montain forests, the number of tigers in any given area decreases because there is less prey available. Status in the wild: 400-500 wild Sumatran tigers were believed to exist in 1998, primarily in the island’s national park areas, but no island-wide census or monitoring system has been possible. Tiger numbers have continued to decline because of poaching of tigers to supply the illegal trade in tiger parts. The last remnants of lowland forest are being eliminated to establish oil palm plantations and for shifting agriculture by recent settlers from other areas of Sumatra and Indonesia. Ongoing road development makes many formerly inaccessible mountain areas accessible to illegal logging even on the steepest slopes, and many mountainous areas are being converted into plantations for coffee and other products for international markets. Tigers are legally protected but are not highly valued. Captive breeding: For three years, the Indonesian Zoological Parks’ Association (PKBSI) has been working with the Tiger Global Conservation Strategy to develop a conservation program for Sumatran tigers. In addition to the 65 Sumatran tigers living in Indonesian zoos, there are 55 tigers managed by North American zoos, 100 in European zoos, and 12 in Australasian zoos. This captive population is descended from 37 wild-caught founders. The Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Masterplan now has the potential to function as the heart of the Sumatran tiger population worldwide. It is designed to preserve sufficient genetic diversity to reinforce both captive and wild populations, thus fulfilling its goal to ensure that the in situ tiger program comprises verifiable founders permanently identified and registered in the Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Studbook. It also extends the capabilities of Indonesian zoo staff to professionally manage their tiger programs in Indonesia, and at the same time serves as a model for other range country tiger management programs in Southeast Asia.

This Western Lowland Gorilla and her baby son was shot from 100 feet away. All I wanted to do was get closer. It was starting to rain and she moved into the entrance to her shelter. I consider myself lucky to get this shot.

This elderly woman sits at the window and contemplates the world outside. She does not see far beyond the window frame because her world has diminished considerably. Two years ago she was officially diagnosed with dementia after a life threatening surgery and long hospital stay. However, her family and friends noticed a difference in her personality over the last several years. Once a proud and hard working single mom, she raised two children during the 60’s and 70’s at a time when single parenthood was not as widely accepted as it is today. At present, she is reduced to little more than the passive demeanor of a quiet child. She is aware of the reduction in both her mental and physical abilities. She also understands that she is helpless to change anything. / It takes great courage to face the inevitable. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia; it accounts for 64 per cent of all dementias. For example right now in the US, Alzeihmer’s has surpassed diabetes and is the sixth leading cause of death. As baby boomers are rapidly approaching the age of retirement it is believed that 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s in their lifetime. by KcranmerArtDear friends… Per the request of my dear friend Sarah Moore I am re-uploading a dream request I created for her and her family in the honor of her baby boy Axel. Sarah…since the day you asked me to create your dream request of your sweet Axel…was the day I felt like Axel stepped into my heart. I’ve never put so much passion into one image in my life. And to explain in more detail…it takes me some time to create a new image…but when I created this of your boy…everything came to me like 2nd nature. I really and truly feel in my heart, that a little helper was at my side when I made this. I wanted to tell you this when I first created it for you…but knew how emotional the times were…so with that…I am once again honored to share the spirit of Axel! Many of you will remember, and some of you may be new to the news of Sarah Moore’s little boy Axel. Please read below. Sad news …This is Rosalie, Sarah’s mum writing on Sarah’s behalf. / Locals may have heard already on the news of the drowning of a 15mth old in the northwest of Sydney. This is Axel, Sarah and Glen’s little son. / As you can imagine everyone is devestated. One never expects it to happen in your own family … / Please feel free to leave messages here if you feel so moved – they are rather overwhelmed with calls and all the due processes right now but do appreciate the care that their friends are offering. / Feel free to bubblemail me directly (RosalieDale) if you have any questions or any direct messages – I’ll check in a couple of times a day just to check for mail. / Thank you all … / Rosalie Sarah’s Heart Felt Thanks / I finally have a few minutes to catch my breath and thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for your thoughts, prayers and incredible generosity. This image was from a pastel on watercolor wash series titled, “Madonnas del Agua.” This picture was so popular that I had to do two, one for each grandmother! It was featured on one of my books as cover art. I am of the school of human evolution popularized by Elaine Morgan in such works as “The Aquatic Ape.” She explains the theory of human evolution taking a turn in the shadow ocean off the coast of Africa before returning to the plain as the “mighty hunter.” Once you read this theory, every other theory is pretty much ridiculous. To celebrate humans, I did many pictures of them in a more natural environment of under water. Babies under the age of 4 months readily take the water and have no problems holding their breaths. It is only after this age that a fear of water will occur. As for me, I swim better than I walk!

Perhaps the older girl is the little one’s mother or sister, perhaps she is sensei passing down instructions on how to tend the flowers. / / “Beach Picnic” is a pencil drawing which I’ve coloured digitally, I hope you like this image with mother and daughter in similar sundresses. As a child we enjoyed beach picnics all the time, mum would make us special fried chicken (better than Kentucky Fried) and we would go out on the boat to a little island, where i would play with soldier crabs for hours on end, while dad fished and mum sunbaked… they were wonderful times. We also went on the annual Beach Picnic to Bonny Hills with the church and we were great friends with the priest back in those days who was a top water skier.. We would see so many things at Bonny Hills, sea snakes slithered past in the creek where we were swimming and there were amazing white clay deposits in the sand….hours of fun were had by all… not to mention we even had a little mass there… top fun :)

As a child one of the most frequent things we did together as a family was to attend church on Sundays, I went to a Catholic School and the church I remember best was St Agnes’ at Port Macquarie… the nuns would come over for morning tea sometimes, and the priests would come for dinner occasionally…they were the days of fun parish picnics and life that wasn’t so hurried..when we took time to socialise, meeting and enjoying one another’s company. Mum was/is a great cook and host…and although this picture isn’t authentic as a portrait of her and myself…it’s representative. It’s also representative of new life and hope for the future, as the mother figure is with child….. and the child herself nurtures the wildlife…perhaps she is taking them to church for a blessing… perhaps the joey has lost his mother and needs nursing til he can fend for himself. The kookaburra is all seeing and all knowing….. the wise overseer of the bush… in this case, he stands in as the owl figure.
