RedBubble is still only a baby – just a little over a year old – but we have crawled our way into the arena with the big boys and girls. We have just learnt that we have been recognized as an Official Honoree by the Webby Awards, a distinction that recognizes work exhibiting remarkable achievement. Hailed as the “Oscars of the Internet” , the Webby Awards are the real deal. They are judged by a lot of serious, really famous folk: David Bowie, Harvey Weinstein, Arianna Huffington, AKQA Global Creative Director Rei Inamoto, Matt Groening, Jamie Oliver, Internet inventor Vinton Cerf (now that is serious), and Rob Glaser. “The Webby Awards honors the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the Internet,” said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. “RedBubble’s Official Honoree selection is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators.” And who are “its creators”? Well as we are nothing more than the work on the site, then he must have been talking about you! Martin (aka Pilgrim)

2.14pm – Wednesday afternoon The keys on this plastic alphabet are sticky. The seat has no back and the minutes are expensive. The sub audible hum of ten thousand anxious people reverberate through the terminal floor. The timeless neon glow of Gates 31-40, Baggage Claim, Toilets and a Foodcourt burn into my pores. A voice informs me that Mr Nigel Sankey should really hurry along to Gate 36, because all the people already wedged onto the plane are getting seriously annoyed. In another life our original flight had not suffered the generic ‘engineering difficulties’ and we were already home, but in this life we were destined to spend half a day in Sydney airport at an internet cafe, so still in this life I wrench the keyboard from a neighbouring computer and walk resolutely towards the mannequins at the Virgin Service Desk, a blank look in my eye. / How did it come to this? 7.55am – Earlier that same day El Presidente and I burst into the breakfast room of the Shangri La hotel in Sydney, where NetGuide are holding the ceremony of their yearly internet awards. The room goes slightly quiet, the dog in the corner ceases playing the piano, and the 100% suited and booted occupants turn to look at these last minute arrivals, one in a vibrant red limited edition RedBubble tee, the other in a faux-Napoleonic military jacket. I wave my cane in the direction of some empty seats and we take our place between the MD of eBay and a man from the Bureau of Meteorology. A general air that we may be ‘chancers’ prevails. The ceremony begins, and decorum is held in fine corporate silence, broken by an intermittent golf clap as another nervous individual waddles up to claim their glass shard. The 14th prize is for Best New Site, and it is won by a company called Web Menu, but also has a Highly Commended Category, which RedBubble wins. None of the other categories really have second place awards, and so we still appear like we are here for the free breakfast. The final two awards, however, are a little more prestigious, and they begin with the ‘People’s Choice’ which NetGuide are very proud of, and after building it up to unprecendented heights they announce that RedBubble has conquered it without question. You can hear the room inhale in unison, then vigourously clap. Afterwards everyone was very friendly, coming over to congratulate and talk details, I was even accosted by one man in the gents but I requested he wait until I finish, I think he had something to do with the ceremony. We hand out some t-shirts and greetings cards and even some bubbles, which could be seen floating around the room towards the end of the event. 9.45am After a suitably cheesy photoshoot, we jump into a taxi and head for the airport and hopefully, a quick flight home. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— I’d just like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the whole team, to thank all of you, and not just all of you who managed to read this whole post, or even all of you who voted for us, but ALL of you. Because you really do make this site as vibrant as it is, without you we’re nothing, well, not nothing, we’d be a bunch of nerds in a room with some flashy computers and an endless biscuit supply, but I don’t think there’s an award for that. / So thanks and don’t stop now, we’re just getting warmed up. onetonshadow, and everybody else Oh and big up to NetGuide for the whole event, bacon and free mousemats, here’s what they have to say about it Addendum / I’d also like to thank the mighty Anne van Alkemade for stumbling across the competition in the first place and alerting our eager community. May your days be filled with fine wines and tasty cakes.

  • This photo achieved a highly commended status in the 2007 ANZANG: Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year Award. Ironically the key factors in this photograph were all negative ones, bad weather, poor light, a pitiful ski season, and a less than ideal time to go. As a teacher I only have the opportunity to go ski touring in the school holidays which is either side of the best part of the ski season. Usually this means that I have to travel to the Main Range in NSW which is a fair hike from my home in Melbourne to get to any snow. I had spent the previous day skiing out from Thredbo to the ice covered Lake Albina and as this season had not been overly good the cover was quite patchy. The day I took this shot I had planned to ski up Australia’s second and eighth highest summits, Mt Townsend and Alice Rawson Peak but the weather had produced white out conditions on the heights so by default I ended up skiing below the cloud cover in Lady Northcote’s Canyon. Not too far from my camp I saw these icicles high up a cliff on the Gorge wall. Being alone and so far from assistance should anything go wrong I was in two minds as to whether I should attempt to get to them or not. On three occasions in the most difficult spots I reassessed this decision but the closer I got the better they looked so imprudence won out the day and fortunately nothing went wrong. I don’t know whether it was my presence or the icicles time had come, but after getting two frames off the whole structure collapsed, fortunately the shots came out well. The other element of serendipity was the poor light, in better conditions the icicles would have been dazzlingly bright mitigating any chance of capturing detail in their delicate structure. I have been back to this same spot on two occasions since then to try and recapture this scene with a tripod and better gear but the trips occurred in better conditions resulting in the entire slope having a good cover of snow and therefore no icicles. The fleeting nature of these sorts of scenes is one of the things I love about photography; you can literally eternalise unrepeatable scenes, be it icicles, a sunset or patterns in the sand, what a gift. • Lines in the Sand
    by Travis Easton

    US$3.80–US$101.33

Lines in the sand recieved a highly commended award in the the black and white category of the 2007 ANZANG Nature and Landscape Photographer of the year competition (ANZANG: Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, New Guinea bio-region). It also won a first place in a local competition run by Harvey Norman. It was taken in the immense dune field between Lake Wau Wauka and Iron Prince Reef in the Howe Wilderness Zone, Croajingolong National Park. It is just near Cape Howe on the Victorian, New South Wales border where the coast line takes a dramatic turn north resulting in the sand building up on this rock flanked headland. On this particular day I had arisen an hour before dawn and witnessed the white dunes absorb all the predawn colours before a spectacular ocean sunrise had me chewing through my film in awe. I wandered around the huge dune field taking advantage of the morning light that emphasised the ripples in the sand. After some inclement weather this part of the dune field had dried out unevenly resulting in sand bands of differing moisture content being blown in alternate directions. The result was this remarkable, and logic defying pattern. This particular shot was literally the next frame in the camera after my 2006 ANZANG black and white runner up shot, Dunes near Wau Wauka For more pictures of this area check out my Croajingolong gallery. • Dunes near Wau Wauka
    by Travis Easton

    US$3.80–US$101.33

This shot recieved a runner up award in the Black and White division of the ANZANG Nature and Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006. The day before the shot was taken we had hiked 25 sandy km along the Howe Wilderness Zone coastline near the NSW / Victorian border. After a lengthy struggle through the dunes and undergrowth to get to Lake Wau Wauka we filled up with water and retraced our steps to camp on the edge of the dune field. The next morning I got up an hour before sunrise and witnessed the white dunes absorb all the predawn colours before a spectacular ocean sunrise had me chewing through my film in awe. I wandered around the huge dune fields taking advantage of the morning light that emphasised the ripples in the sand. The truly special element was the effect some rain had had on the dunes from a few days earlier. The sand in some areas had not dried out completely and as the wind had blown the lighter dry sand away amazing patterns had been left in the remaining wet sand. For more pictures of this area check out my Croajingolong gallery. For more shots like this check out my Textures gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

The upcoming 51st Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts will be held Thursday 5th June to Monday 9th June, 2008. Some good news on a personal level is that my image Dog Rocks has been judged the Best Photograph Of The Exhibition in the photography competition. The award to be presented is a bronze statuette which has been sculptured by Michael Mandelc, and it depicts Henry Lawson’s “The Drover’s Wife”. Dog Rocks also won the Open Colour section of the competition. I’ve been kindly invited by Tim Wood, coordinator of the photography competition, to attend the Awards Dinner at Grenfell on Saturday 7 June, 2008 6:30PM to receive the award. There is a distinct connection with Redbubble regarding this achievement. Hop Dac, RB staff member, posted a topic in the main forum informing members of this competition. It was there I became aware of the competition, and I thank Hop for doing so. Upon deciding to enter, I ordered six Redbubble matted prints specifically for the competition. I wrote a journal regarding the quality of the matted prints on April 19, 2008 and it can be found here. I’m pleased to say that Redbubble and its community have played a significant role regarding this achievement and I highly value the continued encouragement given by Peter Styles, Redbubble staff and Redbubble members. The achievement is dedicated to my mate Joe Mortelliti, for it was because of him that Dog Rocks was photographed on August 25, 2007. Special thanks to my family for their continued support. Folks, enjoy your creative pursuits here at Redbubble and beyond. Cheers, / Darren. When I did the Foothills Fall Festival back in October of 07, that in itself was an honor to me. To be the event photog, and be responsible for capturing the moments of the events, everything from the arts and crafts, to the kids, to the finale` of the concerts. The woman in charge of the event contacted me literally Two days before the submission deadline to pick out my favorite shot, to enter into the Kaleidoscope Awards. Something I have NO clue of what it is all about. I had only 3199 shots to choose from. I do know it’s a national event for festivals around this area, and that is about it. / So after careful concideration, I chose a shot. Wasnt really expecting much, of course had the hope something would come of it, but with so many other festivals going on..who knows what would happen. Yesterday I get an email from her, with the PDF file, showing what was going to be printed in one of our local newspapers, and yes..it was on the Front Page :):) / This is the link to the paper Maryville’s Foothill Fall Festival named best in Southeast If you read down alittle ways, you will see where I won the Bronze Award for “Best Event Photograph” :):) It hasnt really sunk in yet, dont know what I will get from it, a plague, certificate, dont know yet…lol And yes, I want something Solid, showing what it’s all about! / This is the shot I chose. / / It’s here on RB, called “still loved by the fans”. The reason I chose this shot, is because of the “tells a story”, you have a celebrity, totally involved with his fans, his fan’s looking onward admiring him, him holding his fan’s hands..and something about that look in his eyes. For me ..shows total and complete happiness!! Another reason I chose this, was because of the tech’s on it. My shooting conditions were a challenge for even the most seasoned photog, concert was at night. The only light I had to work with was the lights coming off stage, into my face. So I had to really think out what might happen, and hope when it did, I had the lighting working for me. The way the focus turned out concidering my lighting conditions, I was shooting at a fairly high SS mode for the conditions for lighting. / I am in heaven right now, this is something I never expected, but just hoped for. / Im just hoping they allow me the honor to shoot this year’s festival for them. I had a blast, and have already thought of a few things I would add to what I had already done! / I am so hyped by this, every now and then, it will hit me that I won the Bronze Award (which is A OK with me). Other then that, it hasnt quite sunk in yet….lol / I dont want anyone to pinch me, because I dont want to wake up from this dream :)

I didn’t wish to say anything, but have been absent from the bubble for a while due to illness. I have not been able to get online much due to an escalation in an ongoing condition that is not easy to live with, and needed the respite…. just trying to find some real “time out” and heal myself a little, which is not easy with four children, one who is autistic and very very demanding…...and many work commitments. I have felt really sad about not replying to comments, responding to b-mails, or being able to view all the beautiful creations that have been posted lately so just wanted to apologize. I don’t know what else to say… my apologies….. However, today, something happened that has moved me to share…....I had a phone call from the gallery owner where I had recently entered two new pieces of work in an annual exhibition/art award – The Mullalyup Muster…... and they informed me I had won FIRST PRIZE with my work. The theme was Endangered Species – Notes from a romance with economic rationalism….... / (the works I had entered are not on redbubble as for entry in such exhibitions or galleries, the works need to be “one offs” or strictly limited editions. ) / I am totally stunned….. the artists who enter works into this prestigious award are so talented and diverse….....all mediums are represented, and when in such company, I always feel that digital art is the relative newcomer and perhaps, sometimes not taken as seriously. I am always humbled just to see my work hanging in such company! But in the case of the Mullalyup Gallery, I have been acknowledged in the highest way, not only by judges but also buyers, and I am deeply honoured. / I am also quite upset that my ill health prevented me from attending the opening of the exhibition to hear of my wonderful good fortune! So I just wanted to share my good news with you, my friends at redbubble…..as my head is spinning and I just can’t believe my good fortune! I am so thankful for the support here and encouragement that helps me to “believe” and keep the inspirational flame burning! / So I dedicate my joy at this award to all of you….. I hope to back with you all in the not too distant future…...

/ The Big 30…30,000 views!!! WOW! I’m feeling old! LOL! No really, it’s great…no actually it’s fantastic! Thank you to each and every one who has become a part of my life, my views and even my artwork itself. Here are some of my favorite highlights since the last ten thousand miles… The biggest news I probably have to announce is the publishing of my artwork in “Artists of The West” book! It is a true milestone for me and a great personal success. It was an amazing project to be involved in and over a three year journey. I ended up making some great friends and contacts along the way and really bonded with everyone involved in the book. / After the release of the book there was some really exciting events to follow like the first book signing in St. Helens with the official release. / I am also doing a public book signing, autographs and a special unveiling of three of my new paintings at the Astoria Sunday Market later this month. The Astoria Sunday Market / / (Feel free to shoot me an e-mail if you’re interested or would like more information on the event) Also I am VERY excited to be a part of the RedBubble Rialto Towers art exhibit ironically also on July 27th the same date of my book signing in Astoria, Oregon! My work First Tree was chosen along with 40 other works of art to show in the foyer of the Rialto Towers for a two week art show! I am honored and thrilled to be showing my work alongside the other amazing artists and my RedBubble friends! I was also a part of some wonderful collaborations My collaboration piece Through The Past To The Future with my friend Michael Gatch was a total success and incredibly fun! It was inspired by his photo Through The Past / We had such a good time we did another one… / Apple Harvest which was inspired by Michael’s photo Old Apple When I looked at this work I saw the tree as the point of life that was celebrated and brought people and family together. I wanted to I take it back in time or to another time perhaps. I also had a fantastic collaboration with my dear friend Paul Hobday / I was really inspired by his photo Twisted and had a vision of what eventually became…The Other Side Of The Fence my newest work. Again THANK YOU to each of you who took the time to view my work, comment on my work and invest into me and my career. My art work is the road in this life that I have chosen to make a living on and really…it is my life. In each painting or drawing I create I try to leave a bit of myself to be shared with another person. / Thank you so much for supporting and embracing me and one of my true loves…art!
