Capt. John Davis and Bombardier Lt. Carl Thompson are walking passed their bird to meet the rest of the boys for a few beers. Both can faintly hear music and laughter of men spilling from a tent near the end of the runway. Davis looks back into the setting sun, listens to the big radial engines still ticking from an earlier test flight. The distinct smell of burnt oil still lingers in the air. / “God I love that smell” he thinks to himself. / He gazes down upon the puddles of oil underneath the port and starboard engines. / “Hey, does it look like engine one is leaking more than usual?” John asks, turning to Carl who had his half smoked cigarette in the corner of his mouth. / “It’s been leaking more since Frankfurt”, Carl replies. / “Frankfurt? Yeah, I think you’re right”. Davis can still hear the screams of the waistgunner, when the shrapnel tore through the entire port side. / “Poor Sammy, he never had a chance”, Davis says. / Carl didn’t reply, just walked quietly next to John, the setting sun throwing long shadows onto the tarmac, making them both look like giants. / Both men knew that tonight they indeed feel larger than life, because there is no mission tonight. Groovy shades onna horsefly.
Shot this at one of my most favourite places – Tucson, Arizona…. the barren landscape just speaks volumes to me and the discarded fighter jet engines prove the perfect antithesis to the landscape.

Featured in the Faux Vintage Fictions Group – Thank you / / Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902 – August 26, 1974) (nicknamed “Lucky Lindy” and “The Lone Eagle”) was an American aviator, author, inventor and explorer. On May 20–21, 1927, Lindbergh emerged instantaneously from virtual obscurity to world fame as the result of his Orteig Prize-winning solo non-stop 33 hour flight from Roosevelt Field in New York City to Le Bourget Field in Paris in the single-seat, single-engine monoplane Spirit of St. Louis. Lindbergh, an Army reserve officer, was also awarded the nation’s highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his historic exploit. (Ref: Wikipedia)

During World War 2, the Germans launched V1 flying bombs from the coast of France, targeted at London. / The RAF worked out that if a fast fighter, usually a Spitfire or a P51 Mustang, could fly level with the V1, the V1 could be destroyed by placing the fighter`s wing tip beneath the wing of the rocket, and flipping it over, sending it out of control. A comment by Peter follows:— “Spitfires were not fast enough to catch them in level flight and we used to watch them (they were based at Kenley) dive down on these, get in close alongside and use their wings to tip the things over, thereby upsetting theit delicate gyro mechanism and causing them to crash. My most scary wartime memory was cycling home from school across a recreation ground and hearing a voice yelling “Get down”, “Get down” It was an air raid warden in a nearby post. He pointed up and my heart stopped becuas literally just a few feet above me was one of these flying bombs in a silent glide. I remember it was all silver and so sleek. I flung myself off my bike and on to the road (not much traffic in those days) and between my fingers I watched it following the contour of the hill as it glided down. Our house was down there and Mum was home on her own. Suddenly there was a mighty explosion and I was lifted up and dumped down again before jumping on my bike and hurtling down the hill as fast as I could. The bomb had crashed at the end of a long garden on the other side of the hill and our house was spared, although all the windows were blown out. Mum and the lady next door were outside crying their eyes out. Two years ago I was chatting with someone on here and it turned out that where the bomb crashed (Coulsdon) was his grandmother’s garden!! How about that???” Peter A Quote From Jell:- ” I actually saw this operation carried out over the SE of England many times when i was very young. Also waiting for the rocket motor to cut out. and then the bang. Lovely work”
I couldn’t believe it, went for a country walk the other week and was wandering along the banks of Lake Windermere, I had my big zoom lens on my camera and was shooting some ducks just by the waterside and I heard this deafening roar, I turned to my left and this Typhoon came out of the Blue, I quickly put all the correct focus settings on my camera and whipped the camera up to the sky, focused and followed this beauty through the shot and snapped this one just has it was passing, ‘well done’ I said to myself, all of a sudden I was being woken up in bed by my good lady, ‘wake up, wake up you are gonna be late’..I was just having a fantastic dream, this really didn’t happen :-( LOL, Sounds like a good story though hehe, actually this is 2 shots in one, The Typhoon was shot at RAF Cosford against a white sky and the background is of Windermere in the lake district, applied a little motion blur to give that real speed effect too. / Pretty pleased with it meself.. / Both images shot witha Nikon D70s and 18-700mm lens and 70-300mm lens

This morning..we made it to the aerodrome for 5am and had an awesome and exhilarating time watching the balloons inflate for take off at sunrise and then over 90 hot air balloons rise in the sky all around us. It was an amazing experience.
