Black-shouldered Kite (elanus axillaris). I have spent many rewarding and challenging / hours in the great outdoors finding and / photographing some of Australia’s wonderful wildlife. / Here I present a piece featuring a beautiful bird / of prey: the Black-shouldered Kite. I find it a striking bird with its snowy white / feathers and intense amber/orange eyes. / On a couple of occasions I have been able / to get close views of them in the wild. The image features a photograph of a real White Raven (also known as a “Spirit Raven” by local Haida people) born in May, 2008 on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. He is one of two rare white and 3 black Ravens born to 2 accepting (black) parents. The two rare birds are not albino which is what makes them so unusual. Their eyes are quite blue. All 5 siblings are getting along extremely well and all are thriving. White Ravens are very rare and hold sacred meaning for many groups and cultures throughout the World, including Native American Indian, Celtic, Norse and Wiccans. This artwork is another tribute to these remarkably intelligent and friendly birds. 50% proceeds from all sales go to the Mountainaire Avian Society in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. From a photograph of a real White Raven (aka “Spirit Raven” born in May 2008 on Vancouver Island with an identical sibling), this fantasy scene was born. “Keeper of Worlds” represents the powerful status of “Raven” in our various cultures and societies. He is a protector of home and worker of natural magic. If anyone was assigned to “manage” our Solar System, Raven would be up for the task, having proven himself in mythologies, stories and dreams. NB: Note the planet Earth in his beak. 25% from sales proceeds are donated to I.F.A.W. Well you have to admit this guy’s footwear matches his feathery coat. This is a juvenile Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus). When he is mature, he will have almost pure white plumage. The Gentoo Penguin is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. Temperatures on the frozen continent are rising five times faster than the global average due to the unprecedented rate of climate change, pushing four species perilously close to extinction. Warmer temperatures are forcing penguins to raise their young on increasingly thinner and more precarious ice floes, while stronger winds mean many eggs and chicks are being blown away from their parents before they are able to survive on their own. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice destroys nesting sites and reduces vital food sources, such as krill.
