  • These fighting kittiwakes were an extremely challenging subject to photograph – with very poor light and it always happens so fast. / / (Diskobukta, Spitsbergen – Scandinavian Arctic) / / / >< / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • Gentoo Penguin on top of some tussac grass. / / (Antarctic Peninsula) / / Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice reduces vital food sources, such as krill. / / Gentoos are now listed as nearly endangered on the IUCN Red List. / Read about it yourself here / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • In watching this little fellow scratching around in the duff for bits of food I was amaized at the quickness of it’s movements. When I opened up this image on my computer this shot really caught my eye—the fact that the birds body is in full motion yet it’s head is perfectly still. I have always been intrigued by the mechanics of motion and discovering movement like this may be the reason for that intrest. / I have a hard time distinquishing one LBB (little brown bird) from another but I believe this is a Song Sparrow Melospiza melodia.

  • Malachite Kingfisher / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • I captured this image of an immature bald eagle outside of Vaughn Bay, Washington. They usually don’t get their white head and tail until the age of 5 years old. /

  • WILD AND FREE / / On the last morning of our Arctic trip we had a few hours to spend in Longyearbyen before our departure. We went for a walk along the shore and came across these Arctic Terns. They were very protective and dived bombed everyone. This image was taken with a 10mm lens – so he was pretty close! (Spitzbergen – Scandinavian Arctic) /

  • A Great Blue Heron at sunrise.

  • This Immature Red Tailed Hawk seemed to be asking me to be quiet as he hunted for food.

  • Red Tailed Hawk in flight in Portland Maine. How majestic is this bird? A thing of natural beauty.

  • A close up of a Woodstorks Beek reveals a crusty look unlike any other bird out there. Somewhat a scary bird, but absolutely a peaceful quiet and solitary creature.

  • Took this shot of a juvenile Pacific Gull (Larus pacificus) at Red Bluff last week on a family holiday at Lake Tyers. Another shot that demonstrates the liberating power of my new 5DmkII as this sort of pic was difficult and expensive (on motor drive) for me to take with my old landscape optimized Velvia50 film set up. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM @ 300mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 200? / Shutter Speed: 1/250thsec / Aperture: f/13 / WB: Auto / Post production: jpeg, straightened, cropped and levels in Microsoft Office Picture Manager (yuk, I’ll redo it properly next week from the RAW in PS) Check out my Birds gallery for more avian delights. For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

  • Asian member of the Wood Duck Family the Mandrian Duck / Aix galericalata.

  • Here is another very delicately collared bird dressed also in Batik by use of Fractalius plugin to artistically enhance the real thing. I hope you enjoy this transformation.

  • I don’t know if I just never noticed them before or if they’re new additions to the park, but there’s a group of cormorants hanging out. This one was perched, planning for breakfast when I arrived, and it didn’t take long for him to decide to find a new perch. Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) / Crown Hill Park / Wheat Ridge, CO / Sony a700 / Sigma 150-500 / Giottos tripod, Acratech ballhead, Wimberley Sidekick ISO400, 1/640sec, f/8, 280mm

  • The birds love our feeders which are located just outside our breakfast room window. I often take shots of them through the glass. This was taken a few days ago. Canon 40D / Lens: 100-400mm / 125/sec / F:10 / ISO200 / 250mm
