Autumn arrives with authority here in the mountains. The damp air is tinged with the smell of woodsmoke and tannin. A chill comes overnight and ends any continuing thoughts of summer. It begins a time of gentle rains that last all day. “Soaking rains” as the locals say …and “Lord, don’t we need it.” In the street the running water collects and clumps the first fallen leaves into the gutters. Car tires of those few that have ventured out, hiss on the soaked pavement; the wake of their passing imparts an odd feeling of loneliness. One is looking up 21st Street towards Indian Gap in the Blue Ridge. Just a few blocks further on the pavement ends and the town melds into woodland. National forest actually where the steady drip of the rain on the fallen leaves plays a symphony in the stillness, Gouache on paper

It’s tough to try and explain where this image comes from. I’d like to think that it is a celebration of the serene and the poetic, with some elements of creation and spirituality thrown into the mix. Perhaps it is just somewhere that I aspire to be at the zenith of my own process of personal growth. All interpretations are very welcome…......
