This is the old Beamish wheel in County Durham, England. Painted in watercolour and pencil, in the style of Thomas Hair (1810 – 1875). / My hero from the 1830’s. He is unknown in his own town (Newcastle upon Tyne) and was buried in an unmarked grave, but his work was stunning. Finding artistic beauty, amongst the hellish conditions of industry, in the 1830’s! This is my latest (and my personal favourite) from my Thomas Hair series.

This was a fun one for me to do. I started off with the traditional pastels on a brown mat board, but it didnt feel right. I wanted to try something different, so I started again using acrylic paint and finishing with pastels. An effect I really like :) / Acrylic paint and soft pastels on mat board. 29×54cm. 2008. This image was enhanced just enough to enunciate the colours that blessed this field. It was a sight to behold. Autumn’s colours are not limited to just tree foliage. This is superb evidence of that. These colours were captured with a Nikon D80 and a 70-300mm at f14. The colourful display was found near Hamilton ON Canada, just minutes from my home.

“The Old Year” leaves us with a soft rustle…there is no other sound like it…the air is crisp, sharp with the scent of burning logs…through the tangled leaves above, the skies seem brighter, bluer, lighter….everything is outlined as if the heavens themselves were drawn in pen and ink with washes of red and gold…yet…there is a kind of regret for all those promises made and never kept..letters not sent, friends not met, notes not written, all lost in the swirling flames that mark our days…but as the warmth wraps itself around us, as we shuffle through what is left behind, dreams begin again…next year...Janis “The Old Year” is a Semi- Abstract Landscape in Watercolour on Arches Not Paper
