  • Morning dog walk down by the lake and not a soul around, well apart from a few hundred birds …. Cambridge, NZ / . /

  • As Autumn begins to give way to winter, the morning sky and light becomes more soft, as Mother Nature takes a turn and starts her winter hibernation. This sure was a different styled shot for me. I actually intended to get down to Washington Park and shoot the sunrise but instead was greeted with something that seemed otherworldly. The sun backlighting the clouds and the dampness in the air made for quite a surreal feeling, standing here in absolute solitude, not a sound, not even the Geese you see in the water made a sound…it was ominous. I figured I would try something really different for once and got out my tripod and put on my Minolta 28mm F2.8 lens for this shot ( I am LOVING that damned lens BTW, sharp as a tack!) and started firing off shots, then it hit me,—-why don’t I try a few long exposures, and well, this is the end result. 10 seconds. Personally I kinda like it, an odd impression it gives with the Geese in the water, reminds me of a painting, and surreal as well. Does it work?? I am not entirely sure, you be the judge. I would love to hear what ya all think of this shot. I have gone ahead and submitted it under the surreal category, a category I don’t think I have ever submitted to before…. Anyways, I would love some feedback on this! / Thanks all! / -John / -—-—-—-——- See more on my website jdebordphoto.com / All artwork is © John De Bord, All Rights Reserved. • A collage of a skeleton leaf and a paper bird…I struggled to choose between this image which has had nothing at all done to it, and one that I have manipulated and added things to. In the end I decided I still need to see the raw light and untouched image sometimes, and resist my love affair with digital collage. But it was a tough decision.

  • Nuthatch – Sitta europaea. Devon, UK This is the only species of nuthatch in the UK. Unlike woodpeckers and treecreepers, they commonly descend tree trunks headfirst. They live for about 11 years and are found in England and Wales, France and Iberia, east through much of the Mediterranean area to parts of Turkey and the Caucasus and north to southern Scandinavia and Russia. They also breed in a limited area of Morocco. Their favoured habitats include woodland, parks and gardens, and they sometimes visit bird tables. They feed on insects, as well as nuts and seeds, which they hammer into trees and split open with their sharp beak. Nuthatches are agile birds that spend the majority of their time in the trees. They are able to run headfirst down trunks as well as upwards, picking insects from the bark. Nuthatches nest in holes in trees, often plastering up the hole with mud if it is too large. They lay 6-9 eggs, which are incubated for 14-15 days. The chicks fledge after 23-25 days.
