The 21st Century has arrived. We have said ‘sorry’ to our indigenous population. There’s talk of a republic. So here’s my suggestion for a new flag. An INTERIM flag for using on the way to the great republic that shall unite all brothers – regardless of colour, origins or sexual preferences. It’s not the ultimate australian flag. It’s an interim one. Which means we could have it for the next 100 years. Assuming anyone anywhere liked it enough to even think of using it. I just thought it time to throw something in the mix…. Do not be shy. Break the rules and comment your opinions – good or bad. I invite honest comment and debate.
We were at Darling Harbour in Sydney and there is this massive flag pole which has the Australian flag flying from it. It was a really wild overcast day but I really liked the way the wind was catching the flag…
Manly Beach in Sydney was where I found this shot. The pine tree shadow and the beach flag just lined up perfectly. I thought it would make a lovely Xmas Card. JP

OK here I am glued to the ‘puter on this beautiful sunny day… working on an entry for a comp out there in the real world….just a while ago put up my first version of Australia Day.... and took on board the feedback I got… this one is basically the same but the elements of the Australian Aboriginal Flag have been more emphasised to push its harmonizing elements more into the image of the beachgoers here at my local beach…. now is this too strong or too overwhelming or too biased toward this particular flag design?..... our other Aussie Flag having been hijacked somewhat by a less than attractive subset of the genus australianus in recent times…..
I put up an artwork I was working on for a photo comp I was interested in entering and it occurs to me that it would look pretty cool as a tee shirt as well…..
This is your iconic Australian image. The beach, sun surf and beach sports. / This was taken on a beach on Australia’s Mornington Peninsula.
Victoria Bushfires 2009 – Black Saturday. In Feb 09 the state of Victoria in Australia burnt in a unforgetable series of events. The hours, days and weeks to pass after this I will never forget. The communities of Kinglake that pulled together as we were restoring power to ravaged houses showed the true spirit of Australia. This flag set amongst the charred ruins of a house gave hope to all that passed by and even now glasses my eyes when I think of that day.

These flags carry the famous symbol of the Australian Open tennis tournament, one of the world’s four major titles that constitute the coveted grand slam. It was a scorching hot January morning and the flags were being whipped by a hostile northerly breeze – away from me. Then for one brief moment, they filled my screen. The flags, on the corner of Punt Road, were several metres high but because I chose to shoot this from Platform One at Richmond station, I was shooting at almost the same height as the flags! I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. Featured in FLAGS IN MOTION, May 2009. Featured in SPIRIT, August 2009. Runner-up, FLAGS IN MOTION October avatar challenge.
This shot was taken late last winter, when any splash of colour stood out on a very grey Melbourne day with low cloud and intermittent drizzle. This was shot at Federation Square, during the event called “The Great Australian Sunny Sizzle”. The woman’s costume caught my eye from several metres away, with her red jacket and her red bonnet highlighting her waistcoat, which as you can see is emblazoned with several Australian flags. I actually shot this (and another frame) completely unposed and then showed her both shots on the LCD screen of my camera. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my work in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/180 sec, ISO 400, focal length 98mm. 81-5981
Perhaps one of the most over-used (but much loved) sayings of the moment… wear it on your chest today! For a slightly less ‘naff’ and somewhat grungier version of this idea, click here
