By Darren Stones With the New Year upon us, have you considered where you are going to purchase your ‘08 calendars? Before you go shopping, spare a moment or two. The courier has just delivered a new-release RedBubble calendar courtesy of James Pierce. Calendar contains pics from onetonshadow. My first impression of the calendar is that it’s a premium product and has plenty of weight – not some cheap and nasty looking thing. It’s an A3 size – in plain speak that measures; 11.7in x 16.5in or 297mm x 420mm. The cover page consists of a white matte paper which has a chunky feel to it (300gsm for the tech minded). Quite simply, it looks and feels good. From a marketing viewpoint, I believe it needs the artist’s name included on the cover page. Something for the RedBubble team to consider. The monthly calendar pages are made of (175gsm) white matte paper which has a clean fresh look. The numerals on each monthly page are not overly large, although they are easy to read. Being grey, they are more subtle than obvious and don’t distract from the artwork. There’s plenty of room to scrawl birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and due dates for your favourite debts. The title of each image and artist’s name is printed underneath the image on each of the calendar month pages. The artist’s RedBubble URL is also printed in the bottom right corner of each monthly page. So, there’s good exposure for those seeking world domination regarding sales. The binding is the white plastic-coated type and it allows for easy turning of each page. It seems a good choice for the product as the pages hang flat. Remember, 2008 is a leap year so there’s a smidgeon of extra value contained. Humpback Whale Calendar 2008 – for sale Reviewer’s note: My qualification for reviewing calendars; I’ve been on the planet for nearly 15,000 days.

This is me!!! Nobody else was home, so I had to make do with using the mirror!! But at least it sort of worked ;D Here’s the garden too… Its so much like a real backyard with a veggie patch and rainwater tank!!! Green tank of course! Even all the concrete frogs and cats look happier ;D The veggie patch… includes pretty little weeds with pink flowers growing wherever they like on the pavers, plus tomatoes, spinach, phacelia and pansies!! / At the foot of those ratbag kitties is a frog encouraging all to grow!! / I have another frog like this one… he says ‘I tried but it died’. Doesn’t make a pretty picture as its in a dead pot plant (says it all really). Now you have seen my haven ;D

RedBubble was Hitwise Number 1 Award winner for the quarter ending ending April – June 2008. During this period RedBubble was No. 1 based on market share of visits among all Australian websites in the Hitwise Entertainment – Arts industry. Not a bad achievement in a little over a year. And Australia represents less than one third of our total traffic. To learn more about Hitwise and the Top 10 awards click here.

  • MY FAVOURITES - "The Albion" by Paul Louis Villani
    by Adriana Glackin

    I love Australian architecture & I particularly lo…

I love Australian architecture & I particularly love the treatment of this early architecture by Paul Louis Villani. Everytime I view “The Albion”, I see something that I’m sure wasn’t there before. The sheer detail, flaking paintwork, slat gate, fretwork on the verandah & under the eaves, the missing awning, the new iron sheets. I can imagine the storm that blew away that awning – it knocked out a piece of fretwork on the verandah along the way & goodness knows where those iron sheets landed when they blew off the roof… “The Albion” also tells me that life back then, the early 1900’s, wouldn’t have been as simple as those who pine for the “good old days” would have us think. Was it really that simple, pleasant? Sure, they didn’t have to worry about recharging their mobile phones, or running over the broadband limit each month, or missing their favourite show on tv, or how many friends they have on facebook, or how many people have viewed their images on RB, or more important things like what they’re going to be when they grow up, should they have a gap year, or how many different careers can they squeeze in. No, their worries were very different. Their working hours were long; children definitely seen but not heard; they had one job, from school to retirement – if they made it that far; fridges washing machines, stoves, motor vehicles weren’t available to people living in workers’ cottages. In fact, fridges in the 1950’s still cost 250pounds, the equivalent to about $8,000 today (how much was that LCD/Plasma Screen again??) Industrial accidents, if not fatal, would be the ruin of the family and children sent to live with relatives. Wow, I could go on, I’m painting a bleak and depressing picture, something that “The Albion” is not. “The Albion” is a magestic home, it’s withstood all these years, innovations, progress – it’s still standing proud and beautiful and well-loved – is that cable for broadband?

Well I’ve decided I’m not going to leave RedBubble, but I’m not going to involve myself in stupid arguments on the internet (touch wood). I really don’t have time to immerse myself in debates with people who won’t change their minds no matter how illogical their thought processes. Anyhow… In happier and more interesting news, I’ve been asked to shoot a cover for the first issue of a new magazine described as a cross between Rolling Stone and VICE magazine. So naturally I’m very excited to have been headhunted for the job. Coincidentally, the first issue is on the topic of what it means to be Australian and will most probably involve an Australian flag as part of the image – which will be interesting after all the debate on Red Bubble about flags over the last week. Hopefully I can come up with the goods and create an image that will make people think and hopefully make them laugh a little too.

Sorry folks, I can’t help myself – feeling happy. Just received my final assessment for my Freelance Photography course with Thomson Education Direct – it was an A. I achieved ten straight A’s for the course and I’m rapt. I didn’t take an easy way out when doing my assignments. I did more than required and that has been recognised by my tutor. I’ve just commenced the Professional Freelance Journalism course with Thomson Education Direct, and to date it looks very interesting. Time for a glass or two of bubbly. Cheers.

By Darren Stones Hi friends. Some of you may be aware I recently enrolled in the Cengage Education (formerly Thomson Education Direct) Professional Freelance Journalism correspondence course under the tutelage of, Simon Townsend. I’ve completed the first of 16 assignments for the course and received my grading for it. I achieved an A Grade, and that surpasses my expectations. Simon Townsend has provided me with an enormous amount of information and advice in his first correspondence, and he goes on to state “email me 10 times a day if you wish (I’m not kidding).” One of the reasons I enrolled in this course was to tap into the knowledge and experience of Simon. He’s been there – done that, in Australia, and done it successfully for over four decades. He comes across as a passionate man and one who is willing to share his vast knowledge. To those who have assisted me in recent times – a big thanks. I’ll continue to do my best to promote as time permits, due to my new and exciting direction. Also, a special mention to my sponsors for the course. Thank you for your support. Cheers and happy days folks. Cattle Drive: The Henry Lawson Way, New South Wales, Australia. Tonight… I am pacing in excitement and starry eyed… I just got an email from my district gallery to say… da dut du dahhhh…. I have 2 (not one, but 2) entries selected as finalists in the 2008 Art Awards (which incidentally was judged by the Curatorial Assistant of Contemporary Australian Art for the Queensland Art Gallery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) This is BIG for me… Australian Pacific Triennial is NEXT!!! 2009… For anyone who might be interested… my selected works are (with the accompanying statements): 2D Works Open Section / / Gaea the Living Earth / Conceptualising the local area to intertwine artistically with my love of Greek Mythology, the waterfall photograph is Mt. Glorious after recent rain. / A self portrait depicting my connection to Glorious but also the story of the creation of Earth at the beginning of the Cosmos. Montage contains 5 photographs. / (so even if I don’t win the Bubble comp. I got me some attention…) and Category Four / Special Photography/Digital Art/Computer Art – ‘Memories of Pine’ / / Habitat, 2007 / Digital Photograph taken of the ‘Petrie on Pine’ estate from the lookout on Dayboro Road. This was a morning following a tremendous bush fire in Brendale. / The distant mountains are completely veiled in the all encompassing smoke, it struck me as quite eerie and still. Even just being a finalist puts me in the same park as Bianca Beetson and Gordon Bennet… they are my heros.... YIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Hey everyone!! The wonderfully creative Jo O’Brien has just begun a chain of interviews to bring all of us closer to some of our favorite artists!! The first ball was given to MuscularTeeth who interviewed the famous Karin Taylor and Butchart. Karin then proceed to interview me and Mui-Ling !! What an honor!! Yay!! So now presenting Midori Furze!!! ....................................................................................................................................................... How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspect of your life? I carry a timer set up as an alarm clock. / When I am in the mode of creativity I often forget the time, so I set the timer for whenever my next important time will be e.g. picking up children, start cooking dinner or phone call someone. / When the bell goes, I switch myself and remember where I am and do what I’m suppose to do so I can manage my days on this planet. / I also have a diary which tells me what I must do on that day. / If the diary has a blank space, I smile and go straight to my studio and stay there all day but these days I always have something on it. : ((( / I am lucky to have a husband who accepts me as I am. I hope he does. / He might believe that it’s normal because I am Japanese. Hehehe… / By the way I thought he was a bit different from others but I liked him as he is and I thought “Well… he is an unusual guy. I guess because he is an Australian!!” After we moved to Australia I realised he IS a unique, even from others in Australia. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful I am a great fan of Karin Taylor and Frozenfa. I know many wonderful people on Red Bubble and I love them too, but Karin and fa are soooooooooooooo special to me. / They are special to many people on RB and I am proud I know them too. / Oh, it has to be one person? / OK then, that will be TIM ( the Twisted Inner Monster is a Frozenfa’s creation). / I know he isn’t really a person, but I think he is close enough. / He makes me smile. / He makes me laugh. / Hug~! Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you I have been on RB for 6 months, and I have met a lot of wonderful people and seen great artworks. It is very difficult to choose only 5 works. Can I put 50? No? Oh, it is soooooooooooooo tough!! OK, here it is… / The Band! by Ellen / Ron Carter 02 by Jean M. Laffita / Shoreline by kafka / Dead Friends 5 by John Douglas / Imaginary Life 2007 by Paul Ruiz If you see their works, you will understand why I choose them!! / I’m also inspired by these lovely people and their works, – hahpistuff, Ken Mucke, Tine Wiggens, yanmos, Matt Tworkowski, vladstudio, girlinthestars, Cailean, Ronald wigman and of course Karin Taylor and Frozenfa.
