This Kookaburra amused me for hours while I was out in the garden. He or she would hang around where I was digging in the garden and then land right next to me and stick his beak in the ground for worms. He or she would peck at the ground intensely to get that grub or worm.

This little Eastern SpineBill is enjoying a freshly caught dragonfly … unfortunately he stayed amongst the branches and this was the best of several captures. Rock wallabies specialise in rugged terrain and have modified feet designed to grip rock with skin friction rather than dig into soil with large claws. There are at least fifteen species and the relationship between several of them is poorly understood. Several are endangered. This photograph was taken at a Granite Gorge, Far North Queensland. Wombats don’t usually play together, but young ones are very playful, usually giving mother wombat a hard time of it. I once cared for two orphan wombats at once, sometimes they would both get in the silly playful mood.

My Thai wife Diew and daughter Mindy had never seen a wallaby in the wild, if you could call Pebbly Beach in southern New South Wales ‘wild’. It was a long time ago, before Steve Erwin took Bindy to see a crocodile….up close, and even before the Chamberline baby was snatched by a dingo in the outback….so I didn’t think much about it. When I rediscovered this old slide, I couldn’t resist having a bit of fun with it. Diew was a bit like..”Do these things bite?” I, of course, said something like “Nah, completely harmless.”
