In NSW, the Beaded Gecko Diplodactylus damaeus is found across the western plains generally in mallee, or spinifex sandhill habitats. This individual was observed in the spinifex sandhills west of Lake Mungo, in south-western NSW. FINALIST IN THE NOVEMBER + DECEMBER 2008 NATURAL DEVELOPMENTS GROUP. This Thick-tailed gecko Underwoodisaurus milii was found during hand searches in spinifex in western NSW. We enjoyed his company during this early morning photo shoot. This species is reasonably common, in particular, through the granite outcrops of the great dividing range. Legless lizards are always being misidentified as snakes, and as a consequence, they often get a shovel over the back of the head! The easiest way to tell is that legless lizards have external ear openings (the small hole behind their eye) and a lizard type pointy nose. This one is the Plain snake-lizard Delma inornata and is found across eastern Australia, particularly in grassland or woodland habitats. This one was found beneath a rock in box gum woodland near Tarcutta, NSW, AU. The total length of this animal was around 20cm and about as thick as your little finger! / / Click on “View Larger” for greater detail. One of the most stunning forms in the World. The incredibly bright green Australian Green Tree is rare in captivity (in Australia) as they command more $ than the more common exotic forms. Eye catching is one way to describe them, beautiful is another..
The Mulga Snake Pseudechis australis (also commonly known as the King Brown) is not a brown snake at all, but a member of the Black Snake family. This species is venomous and should not be approached. As you can see in this image, he was starting to get a bit cranky about our presence seen by his ‘flattening’. It is one of the most common elapid species of western NSW. This one was found north of Wilcannia. Steve is the Principal Ecologist at EnviroKey providing specialist ecological services across Australia.
The Eastern Stone Gecko Diplodactylus vittatus occurs in arid and semi-arid shrublands ranging from mallee to mulga. This individual was found during fauna surveys of spinifex north of Wentworth in far south-western NSW. Steve is the Principal Ecologist at EnviroKey, a specialist ecological consultancy that undertakes surveys, research and education programs across Australia.
This Eastern Blue tongue lizard, one of Our best Aussie Icons, was not too impressed when his morning bask in the sun was interrupted for this photo shot? This shot was taken in a small woodland patch near Murrurundi in the Upper Hunter region of NSW, AU. This Eastern Bearded Dragon Pogona barbata was found sitting on top of an old fence post near Maitland in the Hunter region of NSW, AU. Steve is the Principal Ecologist at EnviroKey, a specialist ecological consultancy that undertakes surveys, research and education programs across Australia.
Every summer these little guys climb the fence posts … Catchin’ a few rays and keeping an eye on the neighbours!! :) LOL Agamid – Central Netted Dragon (Ctenophorus nuchalis) / Mullewa, Western Australia. A last minute calender for 2009, the ‘Lizards of Oz’ showcases some of our great Australian skinks. All pictures are of wild animals in their natural habitats, not captive animals in zoos or private collections.
This endangered Tawny Rock Dragon Ctenophorus decresii male was seen basking in a rocky outcrop in western NSW during field work for the recently approved Silverton Wind Farm. I like this photo as it provides a link between the dragon and one of the threats to known populations: Competition and habitat degradation by Feral Goats. Just behind this male are some goat scats (poo). In many areas, scats can completely fill the rock crevices that these dragons need for refuge and breeding. Recently there’s been a spate of crocodile attacks here in Australia. / / Just last weekend, 11 year old Birony Goodsell was dragged underwater by one and never resurfaced. / / If feel deeply sorry for her and even worse for her family but for crying out loud, she was swiming in our most dangerous state, in a place called Black Jungle Swamp. / / That’s just asking for it. / / So now authorities are setting traps to catch and kill these so called ‘menacing’ crocodiles. / / Fair enough but I think it’s important for all of us to remember that we don’t own this planet. We share it with millions of other species and we have to learn and teach our children to respect them and their rights. / / I’m doing this shirt to present the lighter side of these primordial creatures and point out that they aren’t menacing. They’re just hungry. / / /

I photographed this wonderful bearded dragon at a Reptile show in Wollongong NSW today. He has such amazing texture and beautiful colour. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get too many details about this little fellow as I was trying to chase three of my grandchildren and a friend around the Centre as well as get some photographs. This was taken with my Canon 40 D SLR with the macro lens, whilst moving along a line and through a glass tank. Thanks for visiting
Australian Estuarine Crocodiles “Salties”.... truly fearsome creatures to me. / I spent 2 years living in Darwin convinced that my Husband would be eaten by one…. he likes to fish from the riverbank…... luckily he saw the sense in not doing this while we lived there. These crocs were in captivity so I was quite safe….. but some people insist on putting themselves in danger with crocs in the wild. Check this out and moments later [canon 10000D] Featured – Dimensions group – June 2009
This fellow is one lucky bobtail. I found him in…...a disused pit toilet on our property. I do mean disused for many years, and not actually that deep. I just happened to lift the lid, thinking we really must just fill this in and eliminate the whole set up, when who should I discover, but one very weak and skinny bobtail stuck down there. He/she (they are hard to determine gender) had scrabbled through a small gap in the upper structure, landed with a thud, and possibly had been stuck for a month or two. Bobtails can’t digest food unless the are around 30 degrees C in body temp, so the summer months are vital for fattening up. This isn’t the first bobtail I have nursed, having nursed others through a nasty virus they are prone to – a bobtiail headcold, I have cleaned maggots from a fly blown wound in a bobtail’s jaw…..hence we have named our property ‘The Lucky Bobtail” This Bob is rather cute, and pretty cuddly.
