I discovered Gotta Rock, just outside Coolah, completely by accident. I have family in central New South Wales and have spent my life driving about the place. On one trip, suddenly I spotted this brilliant outcrop, right next to the road. This is the second painting (see “The Big Sleep) based on a re-imagining of the real place. I wanted to give it a brooding, even malevolent presence.

Acrylic on canvas. This piece was literally painted either side of a storm, I began the base layers as the clouds welled and the thunder began to rumble, I let it dry as the storm passed, and then completed the final layers. I have decided not to make my paintings available on canvas, as they are already on canvas I feel reproductions should be on a different medium.
Oil on canvas applied with palette knife. Featured on the cover of the second album by Kevin Kastning and Sandor Szabo: / It is indeed an honour to have my work represent the wonderful music of these extraordinarily talented musicians. She opened the leather suitcase filled with treasures of vintage fabrics and velvet hats that I made long ago. Layered them over her shoulders and around her waist and asked me to attach them so they wouldn’t fall off. She stood at the back door and I grabbed the camera and took a snapshot. Played with my cool digital tools and this is the result. / / Original pencil drawing on Aquarelle Arches paper 56×76cm / Drawing 15 hours/painting 12 hours = 27 hours total A digitally painted hand drawn artwork… the inspiration for this is “Meeting Places”... As a child one of the most frequent things we did together as a family was to attend church on Sundays, I went to a Catholic School and the church I remember best was St Agnes’ at Port Macquarie… the nuns would come over for morning tea sometimes, and the priests would come for dinner occasionally…they were the days of fun parish picnics and life that wasn’t so hurried..when we took time to socialise, meeting and enjoying one another’s company. Mum was/is a great cook and host…and although this picture isn’t authentic as a portrait of her and myself…it’s representative. It’s also representative of new life and hope for the future, as the mother figure is with child….. and the child herself nurtures the wildlife…perhaps she is taking them to church for a blessing… perhaps the joey has lost his mother and needs nursing til he can fend for himself. The kookaburra is all seeing and all knowing….. the wise overseer of the bush… in this case, he stands in as the owl figure.
