A paper sculpture of The Hermannsburg Mission church out of the text of Albert Namitjira’s biography in a book on Australian Art. One ‘sacred site’ is the Church – the other is Namitjira’s Arrente country. Although the painting is done in an European style – taught to him within the mission church – he was painting significant, spiritual sites. Continuing my series of paper sculptures out of books. (originally titled “The First Intervention” in response to the intervention in the Northern Territory)

Another of the many wondrous scenes to be had in New Norcia, about an hour and a half north of Perth, Western Australia, on the Great Northern Highway. / The church was constructed from bush stones, mud plaster and rough-hewn tree trunks, and the original wooden shingles can still be seen under the eaves. It was opened in 1861 and has been added to over the years. It is interesting to note that the oldest sections of the church have imitation plaster pillars, while later additions have white pillars painted on them. Abbot Torres altered the original contemporary Georgian style in 1908 by adding the Latin-flavoured facade and bell tower. The building’s newest section is the brick addition at the rear, made in the 1920s to house the massive church organ brought back from Germany by the Benedictine composer, Father Stephen Moreno. / Salvado died during a visit to Rome in 1900 at the age of 86, a testament to his physical strength and energy. His remains were brought back to the New Norcia he had loved by his chosen successor Torres in 1903, and are interred in the marble tomb in the church’s choir area. Hanging on the wall is the painting of Our Lady of Good Counsel (also called The Mother of Good Counsel), given to Salvado before he left for Australia in 1845 by Bishop (later Saint) Vincent Palotti. One of New Norcia’s most famous stories relates how Salvado turned back a bushfire threatening the mission’s crops in 1847 by placing this revered painting in its path: / “Scarcely had the sacred picture been placed facing the flames than the wind suddenly changed direction and drove the flames back to the part already burnt, and with this danger ended.” Taken with my Sony alpha 350 / 18 – 70 zoom lens

/ / Original pencil drawing on Aquarelle Arches paper 56×76cm / Drawing 15 hours/painting 12 hours = 27 hours total A digitally painted hand drawn artwork… the inspiration for this is “Meeting Places”... As a child one of the most frequent things we did together as a family was to attend church on Sundays, I went to a Catholic School and the church I remember best was St Agnes’ at Port Macquarie… the nuns would come over for morning tea sometimes, and the priests would come for dinner occasionally…they were the days of fun parish picnics and life that wasn’t so hurried..when we took time to socialise, meeting and enjoying one another’s company. Mum was/is a great cook and host…and although this picture isn’t authentic as a portrait of her and myself…it’s representative. It’s also representative of new life and hope for the future, as the mother figure is with child….. and the child herself nurtures the wildlife…perhaps she is taking them to church for a blessing… perhaps the joey has lost his mother and needs nursing til he can fend for himself. The kookaburra is all seeing and all knowing….. the wise overseer of the bush… in this case, he stands in as the owl figure.
The historic, Australian, Bindoon Holy Trinity Church was erected in 1887. Bindoon was a word used by the local aboriginal people and means place where the yams grow in that dialect.
