Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Eye See You This Pelican at Monkey Mia, Western Australia, was very different from the ones I had seen before (Australian Pelican). Have included some information regarding the Australian Pelican: The Australian Pelican Australia’s largest flying bird, the pelican has a wingspan of 3.5m and the world’s longest bill at 47cm, with an expandable pouch to hold fish. They forage day and night, alone or in groups, driving fish into the shallows and catching them with their bills. They roost on mudbanks and islands, fluttering their pouch skin to keep cool. They sometimes migrate long distances, flying in loose V formation or in line, soaring up to 3,000m high. They nest in colonies on islands and the chicks gather in groups. Their diet consists of fish and crustaceans. They inhabit fresh and saline lakes, rivers and swamps.

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Twin Beach Lookout Cape Hillsborough National Park, Queensland, Australia. Cape Hillsborough with its 816 hectare coastal National Park about 20 kilometres north of Mackay is renowned for its rugged scenery, walking tracks and native wildlife. The closest thing to a crowd on a beachfront stroll in this neck of the woods is likely to be a friendly family of wallabies. The park is scattered with walking trails, the most popular being the 1.6 kilometres Juipera Plants Trail. This trail illustrates the way the Juipera Aboriginals used the parks native plants for survival. Other walks include the Diversity Boardwalk, Beachcomber Cover Track and Andrew Points walking track which passes six lookouts offering spectacular views make the climb up numerous steps at the beginning of this track worthwhile. At low tide a causeway links the end of the track to Wedge Island. Over 150 species of bird life and tropical butterflies live amongst the parks eucalypt forests, hoop pines, creeks, mangroves and headlands. The family Proteaceae is a very ancient, widespread family occurring in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America and eastern Asia. Both sexes look alike, with a blue (mauve) head and belly, green wings, tail and back, and an orange/yellow breast. They are often seen in loud and fast-moving flocks, or in communal roosts at dusk. They are such colourful parrots that it is hard to mistake them for other species. The related Scaly-breasted Lorikeet is similar in size and shape, but can be distinguished by its all-green head and body. Found in coastal regions across northern and eastern Australia, with a local population in Perth (Western Australia), initiated from aviary releases. All of the proceeds will go to WRAP (Wildlife Rescue And Protection Incorporated) ========================================================= Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Brush-tailed possums are marsupials, and their young are usually born in May and June after a gestation period of 17 days. The newborn possum finds its way to the mother’s pouch and attaches itself to a teat. After feeding and growing for about five months in the pouch, the young possum spends another two months clinging to its mother’s back as she moves about. Usually only one young is born at a time, and males do not take part in looking after the young. By the time they are seven months old, the young possums are independent of their mothers. They are fully grown by about 10 months, and the females will usually start to breed for the first time when they reach 12 months of age. The brush-tailed possum is the most widely distributed possum in Australia. It can be found in forests and woodlands all along the east coast, and also lives in inland areas along tree-lined rivers and creeks. The mountains in Mount Kaputar National Park are the remains of active volcanoes in the area from 17-20 million years ago. These remarkable rock patterns are created when molten lava cools slowly enabling individual crystals to form and take shape as the lava shrinks as it cools.

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Australian King Parrot Sets of Two: / A_Top_Spot The colours of the male King Parrot are striking, with the head and underparts being vivid scarlet, the back and wings are a rich green and the tail a deep blue. It has pale green markings on its wings. Their eyes have a yellow ring and their bill is red above and blackish below. / The King Parrot can be found along the eastern side of Australia’s mainland, from Cooktown in Queensland and inland to the Carnarvon Ranges, into the NSW wooded coastline and inland to the Warrumbungles National Park, down to the bottom end of Victoria and inland to Wodonga. Their habitat varies to include rainforests, palm forests, eucalypt forests, dense gullies, clearings, coastal woodlands, farms and orchards, parks and gardens. / Their diet consists of leaf buds and new shoots, blossoms, nectar and seeds from natives such as eucalypt and acacia, as well as introduced plants, but they are also known to raid orchards and farms for fruit and vegetables such as apple and corn. / The King Parrot breeds from September to January and builds its nest in tree hollows, high off the ground. Three to five eggs are laid which are incubated by the female for around twenty days. The young are fed initially by the female, but then by both parents once half grown. Young fledge after five weeks. The Parrot is common in its ranges.

The Mt Kaputar (pronounced cap you tar) National Park lies to the east of Narrabri (approximately 53Km) and to the west of Barraba (approximately 55Km). Mt Kaputar, on the western edge of the Great Dividing Range, is the highest point until you reach Africa, and from its peak (on a clear day), about 10 percent of New South Wales is visible for 360º. The Mt Kaputar National Park is very much a local secret and holds a diverse range of vegetation and wildlife, including many threatened species. As much as 17 million years of erosion has sculpted the now extinct Nandewar volcano and what is left offers a majestic skyline of rocky outcrops with spectacular views. The koala gets its name from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning “no drink” because it receives over 90% of its hydration from the Eucalyptus leaves (also known as gum leaves) it eats, and only drinks when ill or times when there is not enough moisture in the leaves, ie during droughts etc. The koala is the only mammal, other than the Greater Glider and Ringtail Possum, which can survive on a diet of eucalyptus leaves.

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Swamp Bloodwood Sets of Two / Red_Bloodwood_Eucalypt / Corymbia ptychocarpa was formerly known as Eucalyptus ptychocarpa prior to a fairly recent reclassification of those eucalypts loosely called bloodwoods. It is a very showy tree from the tropical regions, which is also very bird attractant. The large flowers come in various colours from white, through pink to crimson, although pink is the most common colour. They normally occur as umbels of up to 7 flowers in late Summer to Autumn. The flowers are followed by large woody seed capsules, around 4 cm (1¾ inches) long, and up to 3 cm (1¼ inches) wide. These capsules are popular in dried flower arrangements. It’s natural distribution is the topical Kimberley region of Western Australia and the northern area of the Northern Territory, which experience Summer wet seasons with a yearly average rainfall around 1000-1600 cms (3- 5½ feet). Temperature range is around 10ºC-40ºC. It is found in open forest on stream banks and moist areas. It will grow to a height in excess of 15 metres (50 feet) in favourable conditions. Canon DSLR 350D
