by carrysmithThese beautiful butterflies are Ulysses. All of them are male. I just saw the blue and fawn colour together on something and then came up with these butterflies in a rainforest setting which is their natural habitat. I think the two colours work well together. I get inspired alot by colour and the combination of colours together. I saw alot of these butterflies in nature where I grew up as a child in Weipa Queensland, Australia. They are just so magnificent in real life. I could never take my eyes of them. The original oil on canvas measures 60×90cm and has sold. Predatory Australian fly called a “Robber Fly” – looks like it has a mask on. Photo taken in situ in grassland north of Melbourne with a Nikon D80 and Sigma 150mm macro lens balanced on my knees while I waited for the wind to stop! It’s one of my favorite photos because it was bloody hot and it took an hour following this beastie around before I got a suitably sharp one – it was riding this like a cowboy!

Another shot from the secret little place where these beautiful ladybirds seem to congregate and hide down in little caverns, caves and gaps. The background glow is more of them further down the tunnel! Located near Mt Burr in the Limestone Coast area of South Australia. Canon 400D Sigma 200 macro.

Red-Eyed Tree Frog. Red-Eyed Tree Frogs are mostly nocturnal. Seeing this one out during the day was extremely lucky. This gorgeous frog uses its colouration to camouflage into its rainforest environments. It’s sticky toe pads allow it to climb up vertical surfaces with ease. The Location: / A very tight, isolated corner at the rear of my home in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. The Subject: / Seemingly suspended in mid-air this marvellous specimen of a female Deinopis subrufa (Net Casting Spider) was all set up with her net for a night’s hunting when I found her just before sunset on a very grey, damp summer day. / The spider’s location and orientation made it extremely difficult for me to make a good shot but with some patience, perseverance and experimentation using the fence post to brace the camera, I finally made a couple of shots for my collection. / The shot was made looking down at an angle with the camera rotated to the portrait format so as to end up with the subject’s orientation in the shot.. / The ambient light reflecting back from the white fence post gave the subject a beautiful modelling light. Yes their back! The ladybirds from Mount Burr made an emergence yesterday with thousands massing in a number of spots within the forest. This group were huddled together in their hundreds on a power pole just above ground level. As with all things in life there is always one or two who stand out in a crowd. Canon 400D 18-55 taken at night with aid of a speedlight. Processed in Photo shop CS3.

Yesterday I reported the swarming of thousands of these beautiful creatures in the Mount Burr Forest in the South East of the State. This lot were clustered around the nut on a bolt holding the side plate onto a powerpole. Interestingly I went back today and nearly all of the tens of thousands had disappeared back to wherever they came from. What a magical twenty four hours this was. Thanks to Biggzie (see his site for some great images) I can now tell you that they are the: Common Spotted Ladybird / Harmonia conformis Canon 400D 18 – 55 lens with speedlight.

Another trip out to the swarming of ladybirds that I have been reporting on at Mount Burr South Australia. This time we took them flowers!!!!!! The thousands I have posted on recently have dwindled to small groups of twenty to thirty and are slowly moving on. They climbed aboard our flowers which gave us opportunities to take some images a little different to those uploaded over the last few days. I promise the ladybirds shots will stop soon but they are just such brilliant works of nature that I can’t help keep going back whilst they are there. Canon 400D 18 – 55 lens with two stage extension tubes and speedlight.
