  • Man fishing off Nambucca Heads, NSW, Australia so involved he didn’t flinch no matter how big the sea spray! /

  • THE SUBJECT: / The subject is really the rigging of a 100+yo sailing ship called the ‘Alma Doepel’, a three masted topsail schooner, Australian built. I was just lucky that this young seadog was clambering in the rigging as I was making the shot. / He had been sent aloft by the organisers of the event because one of the official flags was seen to be flying upside down. As that is an international sign of distress, there was a lot of mumbling among the elders to rectify this error quickly. So this ‘Jack Tar’ scampered up the rigging like an old salt, hung the flag right way up and I was there just as he was coming back down. THE LOCATION: / This very “autumn sunset” photograph was taken from the Town Green in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on Australia Day 2006. THE MAKING of ‘Send That Man Aloft!’: / Now the 26th of January happens to be smack in the middle of the heat of summer here in Australia. How did I get this beautiful autumn colouring? / Well, after I passed a copy of my original through Photoshop CS I tried out a few filters from the OptikVerve Lab’s Virtual Photographer free filter plug-in for Photoshop, just to see what they would do. The one that brought about this lovely affect is called ‘Colourise’. So far this is the only image it has work on well enough for me to keep the change! There is nothing wrong with the original. As a matter of fact it looks quite good. But this affect is just so warm and smooth while keeping all the nice sharp detail. / Fuji S5500: High resolution jpg, f/3.1 @ 1/420sec, ISO100, Hand held. / Photoshop CS. • THE SUBJECT: / Out with a couple of Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mates scouting the Pappinbarra district on a very grey, damp day in summer. We came across this man of the land hard at work slashing a paddock. I decided to wait until he had done a lap so as to include him and his orange tractor in the landscape.
