Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Eye See You This Pelican at Monkey Mia, Western Australia, was very different from the ones I had seen before (Australian Pelican). Have included some information regarding the Australian Pelican: The Australian Pelican Australia’s largest flying bird, the pelican has a wingspan of 3.5m and the world’s longest bill at 47cm, with an expandable pouch to hold fish. They forage day and night, alone or in groups, driving fish into the shallows and catching them with their bills. They roost on mudbanks and islands, fluttering their pouch skin to keep cool. They sometimes migrate long distances, flying in loose V formation or in line, soaring up to 3,000m high. They nest in colonies on islands and the chicks gather in groups. Their diet consists of fish and crustaceans. They inhabit fresh and saline lakes, rivers and swamps.
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Christmas Bells Christmas Bell (Blandfordia grandiflora) Blandfordia...After the Marquis of Blandford / grandiflora....large flowered Found in coastal areas of central and northern New South Wales and south-east Queensland. Blandfordia is a small genus of 4 species all confined to south-eastern Australia. They are slow-growing, grass-like plants with narrow leaves and bell-shaped flowers produced on stems arising from the centre of the clump. All are commonly known as “Christmas bells” as they generally flower in December-January. B.grandiflora is the most robust of the 4 species. It is usually found in wet coastal heaths on sandy soils. The tubular flowers occur in groups of 6 or more on stems about 30-60 cm long. The flowers are quite large being up to 50 mm long and flared towards to tip. Typically the flowers are red with a yellow tip but forms with all yellow flowers are also known. The flowers contain nectar and a frequented by honey eating birds. After flowering, seeds are produced in papery pods. The seeds ripen about 3 months after flowering. This is a popular plant in cultivation although it is very slow growing and easily “swamped” by more vigourous plants. It requires moist, well drained soils preferably of a light texture such as sandy loam. It appreciates some protection from full sun but should not be grown in heavy shade. It is tolerant of at least moderate frosts. It is very suitable for growing in pots.
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Male Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus) ============================================= / Featured and chosen as Avatar for the Queensland Group / - July/August/September/October 2008 ============================================= / The male looks his best when in flight or displaying his underwings and flanks. Found usually in rainforests, but ventures into adjoining eucalypt woodland to reach other areas of rainforest. Small flocks roost in tall rainforest trees. In the morning, small groups, noisly move out to feed on big fruiting trees. What a character this guy was – makes me smile just to look at him!
These stunning Japonica flowers are in abundance at the moment… dotting the mass of bare branches and dancing in the winter sunlight!
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Chilli Beach, Cape York Peninsula, Far North Queensland. Chilli Beach is wide and long and fringed with palms – a truly magical spot overlooking Restoration Island, Capt Bligh’s first landing place in 1792. They might say the best time to visit the Cape is May through to October, but I can imagine that the roads would be in very poor condition by August. When we went in May they were just grading the roads preparing for the onset on tourists that visit the Cape. 4WD vehicles only!! Be prepared for corrugations and slow down on those corners – you just might come across a family of wild pigs as we did, luckily we weren’t going fast!! 100% of proceeds received from Redbubble in respect to sales of “Chilli Beach” will be donated to “thegreataustraliancancerbushwalk” for the Cancer Council. Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Country Road on way to Mann River Nature Reserve Nestled amongst magnificent mountain scenery east of the Great Dividing Range in the north of New South Wales, is a lovely and little-known part of the Mann River. It is an area of great interest to naturalists, bushwalkers and photographers. The park is located 48 km east of Glen Innes, 129 km west of Grafton. Turn off the Gwydir Highway onto the old Glen Innes-Grafton road. Take this road between the park and Grafton for a scenic alternative, however it includes 120 km of unsealed road not suitable for caravans. Old Grafton Road, Rural New South Wales, Australia.
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Pink Flowering Gum Possibly an Eucalyptus leucoxylon rosea Tasmania, Australia. At a conservative estimate there are over 900 species and subspecies of eucalypts in Australia. They make up the very essence of ‘the bush’. Generally the mass of olive foliage overpowers the distinct, star-like flowers of eucalypts. Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Rainbow coloured Dahlia For a dramatic spread of colour in summer and autumn Dahlias are hard to beat. They are named after the Swedish botanist, Dr Anders Dahl, and come from the family Asteraceae, which is part of the daisy family. These wonderful flowers originated in the mountain ranges of Mexico, Guatemala and Columbia, before becoming popular throughout the world. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different cultivars and hybrids of Dahlias and about 30 species. This tuberous-rooted perennial plant is characterised by the different flower types. Dahlias come in many lovely shades including bi-colours. / Canon PowerShot A650 IS Shutter Speed: 1/320sec / Aperture: F4.8 / ISO: 100
