  • The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights or Merry Dancers, seen from Orkney. http://www.orcadiaimages.co.uk

  • A picture I took while in a dream.

  • Produced with the fractal design program Ultra Fractal.

  • Taken in January 2005, just south of Perth, Scotland. I looked out the window here late one evening to see a “cloud” of luminous green oriented downwards – “that’s no cloud!” and 5mins later I was a couple of miles away in the middle of nowhere on the road south of Moncrieffe Hill, admiring the pretty greens and reds :)

  • Recorded during the solar maximum in 1991. / The Southern Cross is near the top of the image.

  • When I start to create a digital abstract, I never really know what it’s going to end up like; sometimes something comes out of the background to overshadow what I’ve been preparing as the main focus of the piece. / / As in this image, when I realized that the backdrop was way more interesting than the design in front, / I was tempted to ditch the design and let the background stand on its own. But it looked more interesting with the design layer faded into near oblivion, giving the digital smoke something to react against. / / Was going to title the piece Digital Smoke, but thought that was somewhat unimaginative; I wanted to recognize a perceived aura of the aurora borealis. And I like alliteration. / / As always, I am ecstatic when a piece fits nicely onto a card with minimal cropping damage

  • Aurora Australis (or Southern Aurora) March 1990, from Queenscliff Pier, Victoria, Australia. / This aurora appeared out of the darkness unexpectedly just before driving back to Melbourne after a days outing. It’s sudden appearance grew and peaked in brightness in less than a minute and gradually diminished over about 10-15 minutes. / Nikon F3, Fuji RDP film. / © Ern Mainka Severe Geomagnetic Storm Intervals in History / And Future Prospects… / ’....Historically, some of the most intense geomagnetic and auroral storms have occurred during the declining years of the solar cycle. For example, the most severe geomagnetic storm on record occurred on 17 September 1941. That was 53 months after the solar maximum. In fact, this 1941 storm occurred during a time when the sun was closer to the solar minimum than the solar maximum. Severe geomagnetic storms have also occurred within just a few months of the Sun’s actual solar minimum as well, which confirms the fact that significant space weather activity can occur at any time during the solar cycle. We hope that this information will help dispell the popular myth that geomagnetic and auroral storm activity on the Earth will stop now that we have passed the solar maximum. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Statistically, the declining years of the solar cycle are the most stormy in terms of geomagnetic and auroral activity.’

  • My inner rumblings reflect my personal trials, dreams, needs and obligations. My Artwork reflects who I am! / This colorful fractal it seems just wrapped its way around this beautiful polar bear so naturally. Aurora Polaris was so fitting of a title. Shortly after I worked on this piece of art, our treasured Polar Bear Debbie that lived in our zoo, (Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada) passed away being the oldest polar bear in captivity at the age of 42. AURORA POLARIS In Memory Of Debbie…. / / Photography / Fractal Art / By: Madeline M. Allen Thank you for viewing my work. Image copyright © 2008, Madeline M. • A gentle piece by Giclee Artist Skye Ryan-Evans. This scene of a lone Polar Bear silently gliding through Arctic waters while an Aurora Borelis shimmers behind him, is serene and unforgettable!
