En 1318, l’abbatiale romane devient cathédrale, se dotant d’un grand choeur gothique. La ville est alors un lieu d’activités important. Mais cette prospérité sera stoppée par les Guerres de Religions et la destruction de la cathédrale en 1577.

The glorious mediaeval rosace in the north trancept of St Nazarius’ basilica in Carcassonne.

That bridge was built under the Roman occupation in the Languedoc region (Aude). Taken away by a flood ten years ago, it was recently restored. The date of its construction is estimated around the 1st century A.C.

Watercolour fine grain paper, from an original of R. Costes This monastry dates back to the 6th and 7th century. In the middle of the 12th century a new Romanesque abbey church was built. At the beginning of the 14th century, the cloister was built according to the typical plan of the Benedictine monasteries : its galleries open into moulding Gothic archways hanging over lodgings.

The imposing Aude Gate of the ancient and beautiful Cité de Carcassonne in South West France, one of the best preserved and impressive medieval building in the whole of France. This one was taken at sunrise, the sun was coming up to the right, just over the castle walls. This is a HDR creation, 7 exposures, all 1 ev apart. Photomatix Pro & CS3.

Le Carnaval de Limoux (The Limoux's Carnival) - Aude Cathar Country Southern France)
by Corinne PouzetIts majesty carnival for almost 400 years, Limoux has revelled in an annual celebration of masks and musicians. From January to March, unlike the flower parade, the pageants and other similar events, the Limoux carnival is neither a show nor a parade. It is pure, unadulterated tradition, free of mock folklore and this is why it remains such a distinctive feature of the area. Handed down from generations, it is now part of our heritage. Those masks or ‘Goudils’ belong to the same family, that of the ‘Fecos’ In all countries in the world, carnivals require revellers and spectators to watch them. Limoux’s carnival is unique in that both participate equally to the event. The spectator becomes the partner of the actor, as they improvise a dialogue, exchanging jokes – often bawdy ones – in the local language, “Occitan” with gleeful disrespect for age or social status…..

This quaint little place is in the small town of Fanjeaux, Languedoc. I first noticed the washing hanging up outside the house, only when I looked closer did I spot the rash of circles. I wonder who lives in a house like this…..
