  • This is the last glimpse of Australia I had as I flew home to New Zealand. I think this is one of those archetypal Planet shots. A beautiful, quiet Earth a few hours before that devastating Tsunami of 2005

  • Above the thick overcast London sky, lay a city of clouds.

  • I discovered Gotta Rock, just outside Coolah, completely by accident. I have family in central New South Wales and have spent my life driving about the place. On one trip, suddenly I spotted this brilliant outcrop, right next to the road. This is the second painting (see “The Big Sleep) based on a re-imagining of the real place. I wanted to give it a brooding, even malevolent presence.

  • Rainbow Spokes. / March 2008. Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia. / FZ50 / © Ern Mainka Earth Science Picture of the Day / ‘This breathtaking rainbow wheel was photographed from the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia, late in the day on March 25, 2008. Shadows in the sky (in this case caused by cumulonimbus clouds on the western horizon – not visible here) appear to converge towards the antisolar point because of the effects of perspective. This is also the direction we look to find rainbows. The bright spokes of the wheel are similar to anticrepuscular rays except that light is directed into specific directions by large raindrops rather than being widely scattered by dust and aerosol particles. Note that the spokes don’t stop at the rainbow. On this early autumn day, the striking rays and colorful bow painted an unforgettable canvas.’

  • It may sound silly in the beauty of spring, but sometimes my photographic heart longs back to the mysterious light and atmosphere of November. There is nothing like this to be found in our forest here now. Near Hilversum, 14th November 2007, 9.29 am / Nikon D80, Nikkor 18-200 mm at 95 mm / F 11, 1/60, ISO 400

  • I DON’T KNOW IF THIS STORY IS TRUE OR NOT, BUT THIS IS THE WAY I HEARD IT, SO IT’S THE WAY I’LL TELL IT TO YOU. RIGHT AROUND THE TURN OF THE 20th CENTURY A VERY WEALTHY MIDDLE-AGE MAN NAMED SQUIRES MARRIED A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG WOMAN HALF HIS AGE. / HE WAS COMPLETELY, DESPERATELY, HEAD-OVER-HEELS IN LOVE WITH HER AND SAID THAT SHE SHOULD BE LIVING IN A CASTLE, SO HE WAS GOING TO BUILD HER ONE AN A HUGE PIECE OF LAND THAT HE OWNED IN THE CHAGRIN RIVER VALLEY EAST OF CLEVELAND, OHIO. / SOON AFTER THE COACH HOUSE WAS COMPLETED, AND BEFORE CONSTRUCTION BEGAN ON THE CASTLE ON THE HILL BEHIND IT, SHE BECAME VERY ILL AND DIED. / MR. SQUIRES WAS HEARTBROKEN AND NEVER BUILT THE CASTLE. THE LAND WAS EVENTUALLY DONATED TO THE NORTH CHAGRIN RESERVATION, AND IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR PLACES IN THE CLEVELAND METROPRKS SYSTEM, AND ALTHOUGH IT’S ACTUALLY JUST THE COACH HOUSE, IT’S CALLED SQUIRES’ CASTLE. Lately I am all about letting go – of labels we place upon ourselves, of expectations, of negative thoughts and self-defeating behaviours. The effect of letting go has been tremendous for me. I feel even more at peace these days. New doors are opening up for me. Good things are coming to me so easily.
