HAS BEEN FEATURED IN “UTAH LANDSCAPES” AND “A PLACE TO CALL HOME”. The Alpine Loop in American Fork canyon near Orem, Utah, USA is a beautiful place to take a drive, or a hike, during the autumn. This is Mount Timpanogos, famous locally for its’ touring cave after a short, but steep, mile or so hike to the top. I was lucky enough to arrive on a day when the season’s first snow for the higher altitudes had occurred overnight. So not only did I get what I came for, the fall colors, but I got the snow-covered pines as well. The clouds ascended just in time to reveal their handywork for my camera.

A small mountain lake nestled amidst the pines in the Wasatch mountain range in northern Utah, USA. The calm waters reflect the trees of the surrounding forest. This photo was given an artistic, painterly effect using Photoshop CS2’s “dry brush” filter. Would make a nice wall art piece.

The sun is so hot that it boils off its outer layers, and the result is a constant outward expanding very thin gas. This solar wind consists not of atoms and molecules but of protons and electrons (this is called a plasma). Embedded in this solar wind is the magnetic field of the sun. The density is so low that we may well call it a vacuum. However tenuous it is, when this solar wind encounters a planet, it has to flow around it. When this planet has a magnetic field, the solar wind sees this magnetic field as an obstacle, as protons and electrons cannot move freely across a magnetic field. These charged particles are constrained to move almost always only along the magnetic field. Likewise, when they are forced to move in a specific direction, a magnetic field will move with them or will be bent into the direction of the flow. Whether the magnetic field forces the plasma motion or whether the plasma motion bends the magnetic field depends on the strength of the field and the force of the motion. When the solar wind encounters Earth’s magnetic field, it will thus bend the field unless the field gets too strong. The strength of the magnetic field falls off with distance from Earth. The distance at which the solar wind and the magnetic field of the Earth balance each other is about 60,000 km away, or 1/10 of the distance to the moon. The inside of this volume that is bounded by the solar wind is called the Magnetosphere. At the interface of the solar wind and the magnetosphere, energy can be transfered into the magnetosphere by a number of processes. Most effective is a process called Reconnection. When the magnetic field in the solar wind and the magnetic field of the magnetosphere are anti-parallel, the fields can melt together, and the solar wind can drag the magnetospheric field and plasma along. This is very efficient in energizing magnetospheric plasma. Eventually, the magnetosphere responds by dumping electrons and protons into the high latitude upper atmosphere where the energy of the plasma can be dissipated. Chesterton, The Everlasting Man 1925 “Gilbert Keith Chesterton, better known by his initials as G. K. Chesterton, was an English essayist, novelist, poet, journalist, and author of literary and social criticism. Chesterton was a somewhat contentious man, writing on many subjects about which he had strong feelings, but always with charm, wit, and generosity. In 1925 he published The Everlasting Man, which incorporated many ideas suggested in his earlier works. It reflects his own spiritual journey” / “He then asks the next logical question. Is the Church a continuation of Jesus or a breaking away from him? The first might seem hard to accept, but the second involves even greater difficulties. As a help to making the correct choice, Chesterton asks us to reflect on the analogy of a key. Its truth depends on whether it fits the lock. You won’t get very far analyzing its seemingly odd shape. What you have to do is see if it opens the door. In reflecting on the key (the creed) Chesterton uses what he calls “the witness of the heretics.” (a.k.a. dissenters) Each one tried to reshape the key. The church has constantly resisted that. As Chesterton brilliantly illustrates, only if the key retains its shape will it unlock the door. In the final chapter Chesterton gives one of the most remarkable arguments for the truth of faith: the “five deaths” of the Church. We are not the first ones to live in an age which has concluded the church was moribund, passé. But it has experienced some remarkable resurrections like a phoenix rising from its own ashes. Chesterton analyzes five times when that happened and offers his reflection on what that means for us today.”

From my collection: / Song of a Dream ~ The Golden Threshold Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved Sunset near Goldstream / Interior Alaska North Star This is a composite of two images taken in the same location at the same time stitched one over the other so that you may better see what I see as I am standing here gazing at this sensational sunset as the swans are feeding in the peat bog nearby. “There is a quiet spirit in these woods, / That dwells where’er the gentle south-wind blows; / Where, underneath the white-thorn, in the glade, / The wild flowers bloom, or, kissing the soft air, / The leaves above their sunny palms outspread. / With what a tender and impassioned voice / It fills the nice and delicate ear of thought, / When the fast ushering star of morning comes / O’er-riding the gray hills with golden scarf; / Or when the cowled and dusky-sandaled Eve, / In mourning weeds, from out the western gate, / Departs with silent pace! That spirit moves In the green valley, where the silver brook, / From its full laver, pours the white cascade; / And, babbling low amid the tangled woods, / Slips down through moss-grown stones with endless laughter. / And frequent, on the everlasting hills, / Its feet go forth, when it doth wrap itself In all the dark embroidery of the storm, And shouts the stern, strong wind. This magnificent Cow Moose and her young calf were photographed with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi near North Pole Alaska. North Pole Alaska is about a twenty minute drive from Fairbanks Alaska on Badger Road. Did you know more than one Moose is still Moose? Many Moose, or two Moose, or one Moose, it is always Moose. Just thought you would want to know that. :) I have many more images of this beautiful Cow Moose and her yearling calf as they permitted me to watch and photograph them for over an hour! I have over 100 shots of them. Of course I wouldn’t wish to post them all, but I will upload a few more if you would like to see them! Thank you so much!! Many of my viewers seem to perceive I am standing on the ground within arms length of this 1200+ lb Moose!! I wish for everyone to know and understand that I remained in my truck watching her with her adorable calf for well over an hour. And while she did approach me as I remained in my truck watching her, (with my engine idling and heater blowing as the temps were subzero!) once she decided I was no threat to her, she seemed as curious about me as I was about her and her darling calf! The Cows are very protective of their young, and the Bulls are aggressive and unpredictable as well. And I would advise everyone to never approach a Moose. She is a ‘resident’ Moose, and she and her calf live in the deep forest surrounding my home in the wilderness when I lived in Alaska near North Pole. She is wild, and certainly not tame, as someone asked. A Cow Moose will kill you if you come between her and her calves. Cows are generally not hunted, and she is simply accustomed to being around humans since she is one of several generations of Moose born in this area. With an abundance of Diamond Willow (their favourite) and other tender shoots along the roadways, and the remnants of summer gardens, they simply brush off the snow with their noses and browse. She has no need to migrate. There are many many more in this area. They are elusive however, and nocturnal for the most part, so it is always a thrill to see one! It is only in winter when one sees them struggling to survive the deep winter browsing during the “daylight” hours. And then too, in winter it is dark for so many hours so the night is extended! Most people think of Alaska as The Land of the Midnight Sun. That is true only for a short time in a very brief summer. In winter Alaska is The Land of Perpetual Darkness. The calf’s first winter is the most precarious. This calf is experiencing her first winter. I can see that she is a female calf by her fine feminine sex characteristics. The male calves are larger and masculine. As we drove down from the summit of Haleakala on Skyline Drive, here we are entering the dense clouds and fog belt of the Kula Forest Reserve at 6200 feet elevation. This recreation area is 6,200 feet above sea level in the Kula Forest Reserve. Polipoli Springs is an upcountry park with towering trees and stunning views of the Maui lowlands and the neighboring islands of Lana’i and Kaho’olawe. Polipoli Springs is most notable for its mature forest of beautiful Redwood trees and other exotic indigenous Hawaiian trees such as Plum, Cypress, Sugi, towering Eucalyptus, O’hia and Ash. Extensive trail systems transverse the reserve. Thousands of feet above sea level, there are no mosquitoes in the area, but the temperatures can get quite cold. Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi
