Aurora Australis (or Southern Aurora) March 1990, from Queenscliff Pier, Victoria, Australia. / This aurora appeared out of the darkness unexpectedly just before driving back to Melbourne after a days outing. It’s sudden appearance grew and peaked in brightness in less than a minute and gradually diminished over about 10-15 minutes. / Nikon F3, Fuji RDP film. / © Ern Mainka Severe Geomagnetic Storm Intervals in History / And Future Prospects… / ’....Historically, some of the most intense geomagnetic and auroral storms have occurred during the declining years of the solar cycle. For example, the most severe geomagnetic storm on record occurred on 17 September 1941. That was 53 months after the solar maximum. In fact, this 1941 storm occurred during a time when the sun was closer to the solar minimum than the solar maximum. Severe geomagnetic storms have also occurred within just a few months of the Sun’s actual solar minimum as well, which confirms the fact that significant space weather activity can occur at any time during the solar cycle. We hope that this information will help dispell the popular myth that geomagnetic and auroral storm activity on the Earth will stop now that we have passed the solar maximum. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Statistically, the declining years of the solar cycle are the most stormy in terms of geomagnetic and auroral activity.’

Painted from an 1880’s photo, of the fishing port of Whitby on the North East coast of England. Here, laid up, is the collier brig, ‘Opal’. The ruins of the priory, immortalised by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, can be seen on the hill. My first pen and watercolour work. Watercolour washes over a pencil drawing, then finished in ink. Hannemuhle, 200lb paper 7”x 8”.

A Conversation With the Clouds Captured at an elevation of 11,990 ft (3,655 m), standing atop Loveland Pass is like being able to touch heaven and the clouds. When I captured this, the slight hint of the scent of snow was in the air, and conditions up here can change literally by the second. It is right along the Continental Divide, and the views from up here are simply paradise! Processed in HDR and captured on my Minolta 5D using a Minolta 18-200 DT Lens and a Hoya Polarizer http://www.redbubble.com/products/configure/5778657

featured in the ALL ABOUT BOATING group October 22nd, 2009 As the storm was rolling in at Lough Mask, this little boat was lit beautifully by a small opening in the clouds. Lucky me for being at the right spot! Picture taken at Lough Mask, co. Mayo, Ireland PP: Contrast and a bit of burn and dodge.

Rural northern Boulder County, Colorado Honest to God above, this was utterly amazing….I can’t really find the wards to describe the whole scene to you all but I will try my best. I had to handhold this, along with the other shots to come, my knee is totally kaput so using a tripod was pretty much out of the question, however that isn’t the only reason…as we were shooting last evening, the lightning was all over the place, and well there were times when I wanted to grab it and try, but thought better of it lol Tripods make for great Lightning conductors! lol The clouds were just insane, and I mean really crazy, this storm went severe dropping reports of funnel clouds to the north east of us and hail as well. It passed over our heads, but sure made for some utterly incredible atmospheric shots! So you take that, a Sunflower field the size of a small state, the sunset, a country road, and the foothills and mountains as a backdrop, and friends, you have quite a scene you will NEVER forget!
