As Autumn begins to give way to winter, the morning sky and light becomes more soft, as Mother Nature takes a turn and starts her winter hibernation. This sure was a different styled shot for me. I actually intended to get down to Washington Park and shoot the sunrise but instead was greeted with something that seemed otherworldly. The sun backlighting the clouds and the dampness in the air made for quite a surreal feeling, standing here in absolute solitude, not a sound, not even the Geese you see in the water made a sound…it was ominous. I figured I would try something really different for once and got out my tripod and put on my Minolta 28mm F2.8 lens for this shot ( I am LOVING that damned lens BTW, sharp as a tack!) and started firing off shots, then it hit me,—-why don’t I try a few long exposures, and well, this is the end result. 10 seconds. Personally I kinda like it, an odd impression it gives with the Geese in the water, reminds me of a painting, and surreal as well. Does it work?? I am not entirely sure, you be the judge. I would love to hear what ya all think of this shot. I have gone ahead and submitted it under the surreal category, a category I don’t think I have ever submitted to before…. Winter rolls along in the Colorado High Country along the Mount Evans Wildernes. I decided to do this shot in B&W because I really wanted to emphasize the cold, the drama, and the atmosphere as a whole. Your thoughts, as always, are appreciated! / —John

The night spring arrived.

- Iridescent Altocumulus cloud about 2 hours after sunrise. When viewing this scene without the aid of sunglasses the cloud appeared a very bright white with only a faint hint of color. Only when it is dimmed considerably do the full range of colors become visible. For these images this was done by using camera exposure adjustment only. No filters were used. - My attention was first drawn to it an intriguing and rapidly changing mackeral cloud formation. - With the aperture preview button depressed on the camera I could see these rich colors through the viewfinder except that they were typically more vibrant and shimmering than can be shown here. - Cloud iridescence occurs when sunlight is diffracted by uniformly sized water droplets or ice crystals most commonly in mid level Altocumulus or high level Cirrocumulus. - Also see this image - And this image - Nikon F3, 35mm lens, Fuji Velvia film. 2000 sec at ~f16.
