The Icelandic Harvester. / / When I came across this old vessel moored to the pier my imagination started running wild with scenarios of what life aboard this wooden vessel would have been like. I could almost feel the sineous texture of the ropes as they hung there coated in the ice cold saltwater of the frigid North Atlantic Ocean. I could nearly hear the calls of the sailors as they shouted commands back and forth across her weather beaten decks as the waves crashed down upon her on any one of her numerous voyages. What sights must have been seen as sailors of old lined the rails to peer down at the mysteries of the sea. Whitesand Bay is situated a few miles from Lands End on Cornwall’s rugged North coast, a very popular destination for water sports enthusiasts and moreso for people like myself who enjoy the natural beauty and peace of the location. I took this image from the high ground above Sennen Cove looking down and along the mile long golden sands of Sennen Beach towards Cape Cornwall, some three miles in the distance. The pink flowers in the foreground are Pink Seathrift and they grace the coast of Cornwall in early Summer, there were only about six people on the beach the day I was there and they were walking along the beach watching the Atlantic waves rolling in, so peaceful. I’ve just returned from a most enjoyable holiday in Cornwall and hope you will enjoy seeing some of the beauty that the county has to offer the visitor. This composition is taken looking Eastwards from near Pendeen lighthouse on the North coast, as I walked down the track and past masses of bluebells and other wildflowers, the view along the rugged coast looked particularly beautiful. A sheltered golden beach with nobody on it, the rugged coast and the Atlantic breakers were our only companions, perhaps you can understand why I choose to spend many of my holidays in Cornwall rather than going overseas. I took this shot on Bell Island, if you look closely at the base of the cliff you can see a natural tunnel that has been bored through the rock by the water and out to the other side. This is La Courtine, one of the most beautiful cliff I’ve ever seen. La Courtine is part of the amazing rocky coast around Etretat in Upper Normandy, France, altogether known as Les Failases d’Etretat. I took this picture last August, on a very windy – as usual over there – late afternoon. / I wanted to have the sea looking as much smooth as possible, but I was in full daylight, as it was around 19:30 hours. Even with the overcasted sky, and even full stopping down the lens, the exposure time was only 1/2 seconds, a too fast time to move the sea surface. Using a polarizer and a 8x ND filter I gained 5 more stops, obtaining therefore, with a slight over-exposure, 20 secs of exposure time. Finally, I used a graduated filter to darken the sky, while keeping a correct exposure on the cliffs and the sea. / This allowed me to give the sea surface a watercolour paint look, and I also obtained a slight movement in the clouds, thanks to the strong wind. The Botallack mine was part of the St. Just mining complex that mined the hard rock for black tin and copper for centuries. Many generations of Cornish families were employed in this dangerous industry till the stocks of black tin and prices for the ore made it unworkable. Situated a few miles from Lands End on the rugged North coast of Cornwall, this image is of the Crown Engine Pump House which was at it’s peak in the early nineteenth century, the main shaft from it, the Boscawen Shaft reaches under the Atlantic Ocean diagonally for some 800 metres, most of the other mine pump houses are situated on the cliff tops high above this one. The promontory that the engine house is sited on is Crown Rock, the seam of black tin ore is very visible in this image just above sea level. though the many different colours of ore are also visible on the rocky headland. There is always a lot of wave activity in this rugged cove, even on a fine Summer’s day like this the Ocean is very choppy and I wanted to capture the wave action as well as the detail on the mine and cliff so quite a number of exposures were tried. A wider view of Lands End, the most Westerly point on the UK mainland, looking towards the Lands End Hotel perched on the rugged coastline with the Antlantic Ocean crashing on the cliffs below. I took this image around Midsummer, just before sunset when the light is at it’s best for this kind of composition. The small suspension bridge, centre left, crosses a ravine or inlet on the rugged coast and you can look directly down to the waves crashing spectacularly from it, it is known as the Bridge over the Atlantic. American White Ibis, Eudocimus albus is a species of wading bird of the ibis family Threskiornithidae which occurs from the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States south through most of the New World tropics. It occurs in marshy wetlands and pools near the coast. It also occurs on mowed grass, lawns, and has become common in some city parks, where it can be found feeding alone or with other Ibis. It builds a stick nest in trees, bushes, or over water, and 2 to 5 eggs are typically laid. White ibises are monogamous and colonial, usually nesting in mixed colonies with other wading species. This ibis feeds by probing with its long, downcurved beak. Its diet consists of various fish, frogs and other water creatures, as well as insects and small reptiles. Adults are 65 cm long with a 95 cm wingspan. They have all-white plumage except for black wingtips (visible in flight) and reddish bills and legs. The red bill blends into the face of breeding birds; non-breeding birds show a pink to red face. Juveniles are largely brown with duller bare parts; they are distinguished from the Glossy and White-faced Ibises by white underparts and rumps. Over all both sexes look alike. Like the other species of ibis, the White Ibis flies with neck and legs outstretched, often in long, loose lines. The song of the male is an advertising hunk-hunk-hunk-hunk. The female squeals. When feeding, the birds often give a soft, grunting croo, croo, croo as they forage.
