This was a case of right place at the right time. This picture doesn’t actually do the sunset justice. It had to be seen to be believed, and of course, I was with my cousin and not my Fiance!

I took this shot on Bell Island, if you look closely at the base of the cliff you can see a natural tunnel that has been bored through the rock by the water and out to the other side. This is La Courtine, one of the most beautiful cliff I’ve ever seen. La Courtine is part of the amazing rocky coast around Etretat in Upper Normandy, France, altogether known as Les Failases d’Etretat. I took this picture last August, on a very windy – as usual over there – late afternoon. / I wanted to have the sea looking as much smooth as possible, but I was in full daylight, as it was around 19:30 hours. Even with the overcasted sky, and even full stopping down the lens, the exposure time was only 1/2 seconds, a too fast time to move the sea surface. Using a polarizer and a 8x ND filter I gained 5 more stops, obtaining therefore, with a slight over-exposure, 20 secs of exposure time. Finally, I used a graduated filter to darken the sky, while keeping a correct exposure on the cliffs and the sea. / This allowed me to give the sea surface a watercolour paint look, and I also obtained a slight movement in the clouds, thanks to the strong wind. The Icelandic Harvester. / / When I came across this old vessel moored to the pier my imagination started running wild with scenarios of what life aboard this wooden vessel would have been like. I could almost feel the sineous texture of the ropes as they hung there coated in the ice cold saltwater of the frigid North Atlantic Ocean. I could nearly hear the calls of the sailors as they shouted commands back and forth across her weather beaten decks as the waves crashed down upon her on any one of her numerous voyages. What sights must have been seen as sailors of old lined the rails to peer down at the mysteries of the sea. I’ve just returned from a most enjoyable holiday in Cornwall and hope you will enjoy seeing some of the beauty that the county has to offer the visitor. This composition is taken looking Eastwards from near Pendeen lighthouse on the North coast, as I walked down the track and past masses of bluebells and other wildflowers, the view along the rugged coast looked particularly beautiful. A sheltered golden beach with nobody on it, the rugged coast and the Atlantic breakers were our only companions, perhaps you can understand why I choose to spend many of my holidays in Cornwall rather than going overseas. Whitesand Bay is situated a few miles from Lands End on Cornwall’s rugged North coast, a very popular destination for water sports enthusiasts and moreso for people like myself who enjoy the natural beauty and peace of the location. I took this image from the high ground above Sennen Cove looking down and along the mile long golden sands of Sennen Beach towards Cape Cornwall, some three miles in the distance. The pink flowers in the foreground are Pink Seathrift and they grace the coast of Cornwall in early Summer, there were only about six people on the beach the day I was there and they were walking along the beach watching the Atlantic waves rolling in, so peaceful. The Botallack mine was part of the St. Just mining complex that mined the hard rock for black tin and copper for centuries. Many generations of Cornish families were employed in this dangerous industry till the stocks of black tin and prices for the ore made it unworkable. Situated a few miles from Lands End on the rugged North coast of Cornwall, this image is of the Crown Engine Pump House which was at it’s peak in the early nineteenth century, the main shaft from it, the Boscawen Shaft reaches under the Atlantic Ocean diagonally for some 800 metres, most of the other mine pump houses are situated on the cliff tops high above this one. The promontory that the engine house is sited on is Crown Rock, the seam of black tin ore is very visible in this image just above sea level. though the many different colours of ore are also visible on the rocky headland. There is always a lot of wave activity in this rugged cove, even on a fine Summer’s day like this the Ocean is very choppy and I wanted to capture the wave action as well as the detail on the mine and cliff so quite a number of exposures were tried. “Floating on Clouds” was shot in Goulds Newfoundland Canada. This is The Dory in natural light. I was talking to a friend about shooting “The Dory” and “Floating on Clouds” and how I used a polarizer to bring out the clouds on the water (as seen here) and removed it and used a flash to shoot “The Dory”. I was wondering in hindsight what I would have come up with if I had used the polarizer and flash at the same time. I know I would have given up about up to two stops with the filter which would have meant a slower shutter speed and the boat was moving, ever so slightly, so it may not have worked out? But maybe next time, live and learn!
