Ἀθηνᾶ / Of Pallas Athena, guardian of the city, I begin to sing. Dread is she, and with Ares she loves deeds of war, the sack of cities and the shouting and the battle. It is she who saves the people as they go out to war and come back. / Homeric Hymn to Athena 11.1–5 More Olympians / / / /

The subject of Secrets of Paradise… is the guide of the soul who in Jungian terms is called the anima. She is the angel, the heroine, the goddess who shines through the psychological darkness like a bright sky beckoning the beholder to follow their dream, risk the passage, and at all costs continue the quest. The adorning Peacock feather is symbolic of royalty and potency. In alchemy the peacock is cousin to the Phoenix, the mythical bird who rises from the ashes. The central theme of the image is the feminine eye, focused, a visionary awareness that resides in the human psyche; the third eye. Photography based mixed medium processed image.

Athena, Goddess of Wisdom was a great inventor, credited with the creation of arts, weaving, cooking, numbers, the flute and the trumpet. Refusing mariage offerings from other gods, Athena remained fiercely independent. Her sacred animal is the owl and her Roman name is Minerva.

From this temple Hermias of Atarneus, a student of Plato, ruled Assos, the Troad and Lesbos for a period of time, under which the city experienced its greatest prosperity. (Strangely, Hermias was actually the slave of the ruler of Atarneus*.) Under his rule, he encouraged philosophers to move to the city. As part of this, in 348 BC Aristotle came here and married King Hermeias’s niece, Pythia, before leaving to Lesbos three years later in 345 BC. This ‘golden period’ of Assos ended several years later when the Persians arrived, and subsequently tortured Hermias to death. The Persians were driven out by Alexander the Great in 334 BCE. Between 241 and 133 BC, the city was ruled by the Kings of Pergamon. However, in 133 BC, the Pergamons lost control of the city as it was absorbed by the Roman empire. St. Paul also visited the city during his third missionary journey through Asia Minor, which was between 53-57 AD, on his way to Lesbos. From this period onwards, Assos shrunk to a small village, as it has remained ever since. Ruins around Assos continue to be excavated.

The original ATHENA was the essence of the family bond, symbolized by the home and hearth – and by the mild serpent who, like a household cat, lived in the storehouse and protected the family’s food supplies against destructive rodents. As household goddess, Athena ruled the implements of domestic crafts: the spindle, the pot and the loom. By extrapalation, she was the guardian of the ruler’s home, the goddess of the palace – a symbol of the community itself, the larger social unit based on countless homes. / She is often depicted as a warrior and protector of the tribe – thereto the shield, arrows/quiver and owl or hawk depicted upon sculptures, glyphs and reliefs of her likeness. / This is a photograph of Athena, from Ceasar’s Palace Mall in Las Vegas, Nevada (taken many years ago) – it has been manipulated in photoshop7. / This is for the Divine Feminine “Oh my Goddess” challenge ~ Athena is probably the goddess that I most associate with, besides Lilith. The Parthenon (Ancient Greek: Παρθενών) is a temple of the Greek goddess Athena whom the people of Athens considered their protector. It was built in the 5th century BC on the Athenian Acropolis in Athens, Greece. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered one of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy, and one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments. The Greek Ministry of Culture is currently carrying out a program of restoration and reconstruction. The Parthenon replaced an older temple of Athena, which historians call the Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon, that was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 480 BC. Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon was used as a treasury, and for a time served as the treasury of the Delian League, which later became the Athenian Empire. In the 6th century AD, the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After the Ottoman Turk conquest, it was converted into a mosque in the early 1460s, and it had a minaret built in it. On 26 September 1687 an Ottoman Turk ammunition dump inside the building was ignited by Venetian bombardment. The resulting explosion severely damaged the Parthenon and its sculptures. In 1806, Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin removed some of the surviving sculptures, with Ottoman Turk permission. These sculptures, now known as the Elgin Marbles or the Parthenon Marbles, were sold in 1816 to the British Museum in London, where they are now displayed. The Greek government is committed to the return of the sculptures to Greece, so far with no success. Information supplied by Wikipedia. Single RAW image Tonemapped in Photomatix Pro 3.2.
