Volcanoes Pomerape and Parinacota in the high Altiplano of Lauca National Park, on the Chilean/Bolivian border.
A street person in Lima, Peru – one of many thousands of disenfranchised citizens in this vast, desert metropolis.
The snowy peak of Quisiquisini and Lake Chungara from around 14,000 feet (4300 metres) in the Lauca National Park, northern Chile.
Probably one of my favourite places in the world! This is the aptly named “Valley of the Moon” (Valle de la Luna) in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. In the distance, the peak of the Volcano Licancabur seems to float above the horizon. It is just before sunset when the rocks take on a golden glow. The moment is short lived as the tropical dusk descends quickly. The white stuff is salt and the lack of humiidity makes the Valley of the Moon devoid of life. This is the most inhospitable place on the planet.
We’ve already had the Dos Amigos – and by popular request, here are the Cuatro Amigos, this time four Vicuñas in the high altitude of the Altiplano in northern Chile. I didn’t line them up like this for the shot – they obviously are natural models, and yes, the sky really was very blue! ;o)
.... ha, try saying that over and over…. A white Llama stands guard at the entrance to the Lauca National Park, at the Altiplano end of the Lluta Valley in northern Chile. In the background is the peak of Volcano Parinacota which lies on the Chile/Bolivia border. / /
Wild Vicunas graze in front of Mount Quisiquisini and Lake Chungara in the Lauca National Park, Altiplano, Chile.
... well a lot of people would say this place is more like Mars (how they know, I’m not sure). Nevertheless, on a cold frozen day here in Merrie Olde England I enjoy looking at one of my favourite places which is warm and dry and in Chile. This is the Valley of the Dinosaurs in the Atacama Desert. The driest place on earth – that suits me perfectly – someone pass me a cider…...... ;o)
A small herd of Vicuñas wander across the vast expanse of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.
The weird and wonderful “Tres Marias” in the Valley of the Moon, Atacama Desert, northern Chile.

Taken in Atacama, Chile. looking out on the sunset from the top of a sand dune was pretty spectacular.
A half days riding out of Antofagasta (uphill most of the way) I parked my bicycle and sat down for lunch. I wanted a vehicle to add scale to the vista. A red truck approached. I composed the image and waited… Damn I hadn’t wound the film on. Twenty minutes later another truck approached… click.

Between Antofagasta and Calama in the Atacama desert are abandoned cemeteries with nameless crosses tangled in the wire armatures of wreaths. At the entrance to one graveyard a handwritten sign implored visitors not to desecrate the graves. Across the graveyard I spied a coffin projecting from a broken crypt – a mummified leg poked from coffin – the air in the Atacama is so dry that bodies mummify rather than rot. My first thought was that vandals had smashed the crypt. Looking around I saw collapsed graves, more body parts, arms, and two child sized bodies sharing a grave. I was mortified – what sort of sick mind would do this sort of damage. On my high moral horse by this point I didn’t take pictures of the dead. Days later, still cycling northward I parked my bicycle against a road cutting and climbed up onto the top for lunch. I could hear a large truck approaching and looked up the road to see it. Nothing. I looked down the road. Nothing. The rumble got louder. Still nothing. The ‘truck’ got closer and noisier. The road stretched empty to the horizon in both directions. The earth shook. A doppler effect – the pitch of the noise changed and passed me heading south. An earth tremor. Back at the graveyard the mummified bodies would have rattled in their coffins, their crypts and graves would have crumbled a bit more. Another limb may have appeared… Meanwhile the highly moral cyclist remounted his steel horse and pondered if he would have taken, like, really cool pictures of dead people ‘n stuff, if only he’d earlier sussed out how they came to be on public view in the first place.

The vast empty landscape of the Altiplano, Potosi region, Bolivia . This 4wd ‘road’ is a reasonably well travelled route between Uyuni and San Pedro de Atacama in Chile . Toyota landcruisers ply this route full with travellers and their Bolivian momentos.
