  • The coalsack is a dark gas cloud near the Southern Cross and blocks the light from the more distant stars. This image was taken at Lake Mungo which is in the near Outback in Australia and about 100km from any city so you get fantastic dark skies when the moon is below the horizon.

  • Just acquired an Epson printer/scanner from an op shop, and was delighted to find it has film scanning capability. Quality’s not quite as good as a dedicated unit, but pretty good all the same. So, I’ve been going back through some old negs and slides, and here’s one of the first through. The Coal Sack is a dark dust cloud near the Southern Cross. It obscures the light of the Milky Way beyond it, giving rise to the appearance of a hole in the mass of background stars. Called the Coal Sack by early European astronomers, it is also known as the head of the Emu according to Aboriginal sky lore. This image is a time exposure (approximately 10 minutes), and shows the stars trailing across the film as they apparently revolve around the South Celestial Pole – although it is actually the Earth’s rotation on its axis that gives the appearance of the stars’ movement. It is easy to see in this image that the stars are a variety of colours, from bluish to yellowish; the bluer the star, the hotter it is. Also visible are a few pink areas in the Milky Way, where new stars may be forming in the glowing nebulae of hydrogen gas. / / .......................................................................................... / Image Copyright Duncan Waldron © 2008 / This image may not be reproduced without permission / .......................................................................................... / /

  • This is part of Corona Australis or the Southern Crown. The dark patch in the centre is a Dark Nebula Be157 (not a lot of imagination there). It is a cloud of Dust and gas that blocks the light of the background sky. The tight ball os stars is called a Globular Cluster and contains 100’s of thousands of stars. While it lies in the same field of view it is many 1000’s of lightyears further away. It has the rather boring name of NGC6723. The blue glow surrounding several star is a reflection nebula. the light of the stars is reflecting off the dust and gas surrounding them. / This image was taken with a Nikon D300 using the 70-200VR lens. Set at 200mm and at f2.8 the exposure is 5 minutes. the camera was piggybacked on my friends telescope / In my 20” telescope the darkest section of the nebula fills the view with a medium power eyepiece, and I have taken to naming this the Field of nothing. Hence the name of the image. Featured in DSLR Users Only
