How do you create your best work. Do you plan and think about what you want to achieve, do you previsualise the end result in your mind before you even start, do you let your environment inspire you and make the decision on the spot. Do you tune out and go into a diffrent place to get inspiration. Does your art or photography just happen. I am normally going out with a very general idea and then let the environment inspire me. My best work or best shots happen when I stop thinking and start being. This may sound extremely cheesy but it is like the camera dissapears and there is just me and the subject left. When do you create your best work?

After viewing a few works around RB tonight, I felt compelled to determine two things: 1. If it is legal to use, edit, or alter photographs of other professional or nonprofessional photographers or artists. This includes photographs of paintings. / 2. If it legal to resell imagery/photographs of other professional or nonprofessional photographers or artists. I was unsure if it were legal/appropriate to make a profit from a composition, montage, mosaic, or crop parts of an original photograph. I viewed a lot of interesting ‘images’ that comprised of montage, mosaic and composition work , and asked: “Is it truly legal to sell this without the permission of the original photographer or artist?” I’ve seen a few montages that incorporate record-covers into interesting circular formations. It looks nice, but is it legally allowed to be sold? There’s no question you can create it and store it on your own computer, but can you sell it to others if you are not the originating artist? Your work might be original … but the images used to create it are someone else’s! A lot of googling, reading, researching has gone for the past THREE HOURS. Verbal debate with my wife on the matter was interesting. We both agreed and disagreed on a number of issues. Thus, I had to compile the list of sites we read through… These web sites may help you to determine if ‘imagery’ may or may not be able to be sold through Redbubble: 01. Legal Pitfalls in Taking or Using Photographs of Copyright Material, Trademarks and People / This one is VITALLY important we all read, specifically Section 1.5 / 1.5 Will you do something that actually constitutes an act which the copyright owner has the exclusive right to make? / As indicated earlier, photographing a copyright work is considered a way of reproducing the work, and this is an act which the copyright owner has the exclusive right to do. This is why you may need to get prior permission to include a copyright work in your shot. Some other activities that only the copyright owner has the exclusive right to do (and for which you may need permission) are: / 1. Making prints of a work, scanning it into digital form, photocopying it, copying digital works, etc.; / 2. Making a collage from several different photographs or images; / 3. Adding new artistic elements to an existing work (e.g., colorizing a black and white picture); / 4. Photographing someone’s work and then displaying the photo to the public (e.g., exhibiting the photo in a gallery, supplying copies to the public in postcard form, putting it on a website, sending it to customers via email, etc.). 02. Publicity Celebrities and Photographs … 15 Minutes of Fame Is A Property Right By Andrew Hudson, PhotoSecrets.com 03. Business of Scanning Art and reselling , Photo.net, July 2004 04. The Law for Photographers: Do I Need Permission? An Introduction to the Legal Aspects of Travel Photography , By Dianne Brinson, copyright attorney for PhotoSecrets.com 05. Copyright : It Costs You Nothing 06. Digital Manipulation of Photography 07. What is Copyright Protection 08. The Australian Commonwealth Consolidated Acts … Copyright Act 1968 09. All of Andrew Nemeth’s Articles and Essays . These make great reading. I started writing this article at about 10.00am. It’s now 1.40am, and my mind is filled with new information that has revolutionised my thoughts about photographing people in public places! 10. Privacy Laws, Commonwealth of Australia Before you react, I don’t mean to be a killjoy. / I applaud the amazing efforts and creativity of the people that spend time producing their work. But I also want you to know what is appropriate and fair use of intellectual property on the internet. You might find yourself in a lot of hot water if you don’t take a read of the websites listed above! So take care when you the following statement on a web page, in a book or wherever … “All images and content on these pages are the exclusive property of name of artist. They may not be saved copied reproduced or used for any reason without written permission from name of artist.” Take care when you present the image of a celebrity within your montage. They may not appreciate you making money at their expense. Would you like to go up against Bono, dollar for dollar? I suspect he can afford bigger lawyers. This post also is a follow up piece to the previous article of a similar nature Laws Against Defacing Art

I have just received my Red Bubble cards in the mail. I had read that they were excellent. I had also been told by a friend that the quality of the photographic paper was very, very good. And they are just perfect. I showed my co-worker and she was so impressed that she said she wanted to order some works as Christmas cards. I decided that my first order would be from photographs I have taken of our farm. I actually joined Red Bubble to upload my essays so I do admit that I am not a “photographer” (and I am sure that others will agree) but over time I decided to add some photos and they are ones that mean a lot to me and my family. Someone actually bought one of the photographs as soon as I made it available as a card. Thank you to that someone! Recently I have been trolling through the site and I have begun to compile a list of photographs from various artists. Thanks Red Bubble for the opportunity to access these wonderful works.

Are you displaying any of your own Redbubble Artwork within your home? / How many? Card, Canvas, Frame, etc? / Feel free to display the link/original image from within your gallery. I’m keen to know how many artists buy their own work. Because, as I often say to other artists, if it’s so good to put onto Redbubble for someone else to purchase … Have you bought it yourself? Answer this any which way you want, I appreciate your thoughts on this matter. This is the first of a variety of questions I will be asking Redbubble Artists over the next few weeks.

It’s not sales and marketing, it’s marketing and sales. How can you sell something before you’ve marketed it? / Anyhow, for those who thought this was going to be an expose on how to market and sell your redbubble art, you might be slightly dismayed. I say slightly because the message is surprisingly simple. This is marketing . I plurked about my recent befriending of a fellow train-catcher that resulted in a discussion that enabled me to promote my photo-hobby. This is sales: I sold a framed image from my RB gallery today. This is Naked Porcupine , medium, black frame, bright white matte. / For the tech-nerds at Redbubble headquarters who are saying ‘Hang on, hang on, our records show that YOU bought this from your own gallery!’: Yes, you are right, I purchased it myself. Let me explain why: I told a handful of friends earlier today that I’d be ordering a heap of cards and shirts this weekend, and that if they wanted anything in particular to tell me the names (and style) ASAP so I could include them. Within 10 minutes, a request for the aforementioned frame was asked of me, plus a request on how it could be paid for quickly and easily without using online facilities. / I agreed to pay for it myself and deliver to its new home … whereupon payment will be made. In closing, this is for those readers who’ve been hanging out for my usual marketing tips that bring in the sales, here they are: 1. Promote your work wherever you are: / ... Including public transport, family events, football stadiums, your local pub’, and online social networking (and in this circumstance, plurk.com) . / 2. When introducing yourself to new friends, tell them you are a photographer/artist/etc. / ... Don’t be embarrassed to tell people what you enjoy. Even if it’s only a hobby now, a little bit of exposure might be all the push you need to make your time and energy into a career. / 3. When asked to see your artwork, have it available. / ... Finally having an Apple Touch is worthwhile for something more than getting email and free wifi ! / 4. Be prepared to buy your own work if that’s what it takes to sell your artwork. / ... I have two boxes of my own cards, plus an online list available for people to choose which photographs they’d like to buy as card from me . / ... I also keep a handful of cards (protected by individual plastic bags to include the white envelope within the card) in my day-bag for letting people see and feel them. Everyone wants to know about the quality of the paper, the gloss of the image and to see them in-detail. Hope this helps you, because it all works very well for me!

On the way home from Wal-Mart, the place of blender triumph, I did some drawing and painting. Still not finished with the piece, but, here’s an album that shows some of the work in progress. “Work in progress”http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=82013&l=2831d&id=612813763 Hopefully that’ll work, anyway! Though, I shall probably have to change the name of the album. I mean, once I figure out what the name of the painting is, anyway. Otherwise, if I used the same album for all pieces, it would get nigh on confusing to us all! Especially me! For those too lazy to go and read the description, I shall post a couple of the photos here .. if it works! lol That’s the first wee drawing of the painting, done in charcoal on canvas That is while still in the van, but having started with the watercolor paints. No, i don’t usually paint in the van. Sometimes, though, you know, you just gotta do what you gotta do. I had the paints, they were watercolors, my clothes were black, and we were on our way home, so if there had been any major incidents or accidents it wouldn’t have been too big a deal. The main thing i learned from working on this painting, is that I am really, really bad with brushes. Well, the business end of them. I can kick butt with the handle, doing quasi-pointillism

I just wanted to take this opportunity to Thank each and everyone who is on my favorites list, commented on my photographs, faved my photographs, accepted them in your groups and just made me feel so darn welcome here at RB, from the beginners, like myself, to the more expert of photographers/artists. I know that I am only a beginner at this and that there are far more expert photographers than myself here on RB, but I don’t think I expected to get such great feedback and really good responses back on my work from everyone. It is all truly appreciated and I am honored that you feel like that you would like what I have shared with you all so far. / I thank you all kindly for the boost in confidence / There will be more to come as and when I take some other good photographs. Also, this Thank you note is to all the wonderful and amazingly talented photographs and artists on my list and otherwise who have shared their wonderful talents and photos with me. You are truly all very very talented I envy and appreciate you all. / Thank you so much for sharing your artworks/photos with me. Truly appreciated. I look forward to sharing more of my snapshots with you soon and viewing more of your great works. Take care and Happy Snapping. Jay

I am in a bit of a pickle, and it is a difficult situation to put into words. As head moderator for Adelaide/SA , I make the final decision on what gets approved and rejected. Whilst Dave, Georgie and Jemma have the ability to say yay or nay on your submissions, I will go through them again and remove those that don’t quite fit the requirements. This is where I am trying to be delicate in my words: The requirements . We have clearly written what is required to fit the theme of this group. In order to achieve this theme, I will say a firm NO to many submissions. Please note: / There are other groups for imagery where the main focus is animals, macros, birds, people, human portraits, framed/bordered images, etc. / When your work comprises of any of these elements ALONE (where it is the main point of focus), you’ll most likely NOT get approved for inclusion within this group. YET when your artwork includes those elements in a setting that is very obviously South Australian, then, yes, your chances of inclusion are excellent. The main point to realise is that we are looking for HIGH QUALITY artwork, images worthy of being framed and hung in your own home. Now for your thoughts on this issue… ( To both members and moderators: Please read the image requirements to know what will be approved and why some are rejected. )

PATCHWORK HISTORY / / Patchwork Elephant I have a real fascination for/with stitchery and after getting a whole dose of it through a good friend, my work started to take on more of that stitched and bound look… as you see about in Patchwork Elephant but i’ve had the fetish for as long as i can remember…probably because my mum is a super sewer and the sound of the sewing machine or watching her thread a needle are impressed deep in my psych Patchwork Quilting goes back many years. Examples of quilting have been found in tombs of Pharohs dating back to 3400BC. Joseph’s coat of many colors was probably patchwork. Even armour was made by quilting heavy fabrics together. Quilted bed covers were recorded in household inventories from the 17th century. Patchwork quilting has even evolved into an art form known as art quilts. The Amish have developed the quilting traditions of other immigrants into America, into their own style. / excerpt taken from Ezine articles Thank you to the buyer of this tshirt this morning, I really appreciate it… ..... + HISTORY KRAFT BROWN PAPER+ / / Smile Baby – Retro Tee This tee (Smile Baby) is great for photographers and camera lovers of all ages, began as a marker pen drawing on a huge piece of Kraft Brown Paper torn from a large role I’d purchased for the purpose of wrapping and sending original artworks through the post (after they’d been appropriately packaged in bubblewrap then cardboard, but i found that i had excess brown paper, and one day, while waiting for my computer to wake up, got bored, grabbed the paper and started experimenting. I played around with the paint drips and making butterflies and crowns and dresses by folding the paper in half…..but eventually just started drawing quite quickly without much though, and began a whole range of new characters all drawn onto brown paper, I made them into a couple of calendars, and they are all available here on redbubble in card/print/calendar or many of them as tshirts also. Thank you to the buyer of Smile Baby – Retro Tee your purchase is greatly appreciated by the artist Here’s the Brown Paper Creations 2010 Calendar and you can see where the brown paper is left to show through, i’ve also used white gesso in large brush strokes across their faces and bodies and a combo of pastels and ink to achieve the outcome Here’s the Children of the World brown paper girl calendar for 2010 – all the images on the back are available separately also / Kraft paper is paper produced by the kraft process from wood pulp. It is strong and relatively coarse. Kraft paper is usually a brown colour but can be bleached to produce white paper. It is used for paper grocery bags, multiwall sacks, envelopes and other packaging / excerpt from* Wiki / The kraft process was developed by Carl F. Dahl in 1879, and a pulp mill using this technology started (in Sweden) in 1890.[2] The invention of the recovery boiler by G.H. Tomlinson in the early 1930s, was a milestone in the advancement of the kraft process.[3] It enabled the recovery and reuse of the inorganic pulping chemicals such that a kraft mill is a nearly closed-cycle with respect to inorganic chemicals, apart from those used in the bleaching process. For this reason, in the 1940s, the kraft process surpassed the sulfite process as the dominant method for producing wood pulp.[2] / excerpt from Wiki Last, but not least, here’s the Love is a Big Hug 2010 calendar, which has a selection of brown paper creations with a mix of other sweet loving artworks for girls of all ages
