Announcing a new Photo Competition. The theme is “Once in a Blue Moon” / Deadline February 28, 2008 You don’t need to have a blue moon in your entry. I am looking more at the phrase “Once in a Blue Moon”, meaning something that doesn’t happen very often (if ever). For example, pigs flying, snow in Los Angeles etc. This is wide open for your imagination. / Requirements: The entries must have been worked on in Photoshop only. No other editing or specialty programs are allowed. See the rules below. / The artwork must be brand new artwork. The purpose of this competition is to encourage people to go out and create something new and different in Photoshop. / Snowdog (winner of last years Blue Moon Photo Comp) and Deon de Waal have graciously volunteered to help me judge this contest. Thanks guys. / Prizes are: / 1st: Red Bubble Gift certificate for $100.00 USD / 2nd: Red Bubble Gift certificate for $ 50.00 USD / 3rd: Red Bubble Gift certificate for $ 25.00 USD / I am working on some additional goodies for the winners (TBA) 2 Honorary awards will each receive a $10.00 Red Bubble Gift certificate (USD) The rules must be strictly adhered to. Failure to do so will mean elimination from the contest. 1. One entry per person. More than one entry means disqualification. 2. Put “oncebluecomp” in your tag line. If you don’t have it in your tagline, you are not entered. 3. Artwork must be completed in 2008 (brand new artwork). 4. Photoshop only. No other editing or specialty program can be used. Photoshop plug-ins from different vendors are allowed. 5. If you use any stock photos in your artwork, you must give the photographer or stock photo company, credit. 6. Collaborations are allowed. I can split the gift certificates if need be. 7. You can change or alter your entry up until Feb. 28, 2008 as long as you stick to the 1 entry per person rule. As a fairly new RedBubble-er, I have been quite pleased with the ability to talk to and compare notes with people all over the world that have the same general interest in photography. I got to this site via a link from a Facebook photo competition application, and have actually spent LESS time on Facebook thanks to RedBubble lol. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing, but I figure anything that is actually using my brain is good for me right? :-P But as I’ve been using RedBubble, I’ve come to realize the vast amount of available artwork and I’ve been questioning exactly what the market is like. For those of you reading this, have you been successful in selling any of your photography or artwork? I’d like to hear your stories of how you came to this site and how much luck you’ve had with it, how long it took before you made your first sale, did you know the person, have you had a lot of repeat customers, etc? Also, for those more famiiar with photography sale sites like RedBubble, what other sites are out there where artists can sell their work through another party? I’ve seen a few but I’d like to know what others think of them. Have you had better luck selling on other sites or is RedBubble working best for you? Thanks in advance for the help and advice. This website is phenomenal and I feel blessed to have found so many helpful, friendly people. Thank you all!
Diesel on Decks – The Art Piece / ...
Diesel on Decks – The Art Piece / - This is my favourite design to date and, as I was rummaging through the house the other day I stumbled across an acrylic paint set. / So I popped down the shop, purchased some 45×60 canvas’ and decided it was time to convert my art from digital to reality. I decided to take some photos of the process and as it stands, I believe I am 1/4 of the way through. Enjoy. —-—-—-—-- / To start, I hopped into Photoshop and made my canvas the same size as the ‘real’ canvas. In this case, 45cm x 60cm, with 300dpi. Then I dragged my vector image across and resized it to fit the Photoshop canvas. Unfortunately I don’t have a massive printer, so I printed the image across 4 pieces of paper, (there was a little bit of the image missing on each page) aligning each page with the reference corner; eg. top left image on the page aligns with top left corner, bottom right aligns to bottom right corner etc. Then, I printed a colour version of the center image, where most of the ‘action’ happens. I will use this image for colour reference, and also tracing later on. Then came the question of how to get that design onto the canvas. Remembering back to primary school, I used a highly advanced technique (WARNING – NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED) called…...TRACING. Told you it was advanced! I coloured the back of the main colour image, and then, using my 4 pages as a guide, I traced the image directly onto the canvas. Ooooooh! Then I posed for this really cool shot. Then next bit was to get my paints out and start colouring in the areas. Even though I will later cover over the edges with thick black outlines, I wanted to be as neat as possible and take my time on this artwork. I tend to usually rush things in real life so it was a good test! When I paint, I have a habit of pouring out way too much paint then I need. Today was no different. I’m sure I will learn to perfect this wasting technique as the days go on. I was drawing/painting for about 2 hours and I’m quite proud of how far I have got already. I’m also very happy with where it is going, and it may not look like much in the final drawing SO FAR, but in my opinion it’s on track! I’m not sure how long it will take to finish it, probably another 4 days when I get the time, but I will put up another Journal entry asap! This is where we leave it for today, but stay tuned…I will finish this! If you like this art piece, please view it here > /

An Abstract Year Thanks everyone and I hope 2009 is an even better year than 2008! Enjoy!

The front and back of the CD Booklet The back CD insert And Here Are Some Product Shots of the Cd / My work is featured in the group Woman Appreciation / (Thanks Jerame and Hello Kitty101) I designed this CD cover for my client who is establishing herself as a solo jazz singer after a long career of being in a jazz group since the early 80’s. Rebecca is still recording a few tracks but will be releasing her debut album 2008 or sometime in 2009. The style of her new CD is big band with all the brass and winds! After a photo shoot with over 700 shots, several wardrobe and lighting changes, I narrowed it down to the images shown here. On to Photoshop to design the cover and layout my work. / I designed this cover to really portray my clients best features and attributes and to express her style accordingly. Her bold flair and love for music was as important as expressing her faith. I tied all of that together for her through this design. Enjoy!

If you have time, please view a second site I have set up at / http://www.redbubble.com/people/souvenir None of us wants to look through page after page of someone’s work unless we have a ton of time on our hands, but we may want to search for an artwork with a particular topic. / Most of us keep our sites trimmed down to only our latest and most popular works and we end up deleting many good works that we have worked very hard on. I thought it was a crying shame to hide these works that still may interest someone to purchase. / This second site is strictly a repository for other artworks for sale. Rather than just hide all older or less popular artworks I decided to create this site so that they can still be available for sale with a minimum of fuss. Due to the volume of photos that will reside here, I am being curt on descriptions, long on tags, and non-existent on replies to comments. / I may respond to those folks kind enough to favor my works with my thanks. / Thanks for listening and looking. / Cheers, Al

I am back after a couple of months away. I’ve missed you all and want you to know that I so appreciated your comments while I was away and your support during the sudden loss of my dog, Bailey. You are all so very kind. This journal is also to address those of you who so kindly comment on my pictures and how I reply to those comments. It was becoming more and more difficult to find time to express a thank you and comment on your photos as well. So while I was able to write a reply, I was rarely getting to see your artwork. So from now on, whenever you comment on one of my photos, instead of a written thank you, I will head over to your RedBubble and thank you by viewing and commenting on yours. That will be my thank you to you. I hope that’s sufficient. It’s the only way I can have time to view all of the wonderful artwork here on RedBubble. I learn from you and am inspired by you and I’m glad that now I’ll have time to visit you. Thanks for your understanding. See you soon! Jan

I just wanted to take this opportunity to Thank each and everyone who is on my favorites list, commented on my photographs, faved my photographs, accepted them in your groups and just made me feel so darn welcome here at RB, from the beginners, like myself, to the more expert of photographers/artists. I know that I am only a beginner at this and that there are far more expert photographers than myself here on RB, but I don’t think I expected to get such great feedback and really good responses back on my work from everyone. It is all truly appreciated and I am honored that you feel like that you would like what I have shared with you all so far. / I thank you all kindly for the boost in confidence / There will be more to come as and when I take some other good photographs. Also, this Thank you note is to all the wonderful and amazingly talented photographs and artists on my list and otherwise who have shared their wonderful talents and photos with me. You are truly all very very talented I envy and appreciate you all. / Thank you so much for sharing your artworks/photos with me. Truly appreciated. I look forward to sharing more of my snapshots with you soon and viewing more of your great works. Take care and Happy Snapping. Jay

I was going through my gallery this evening and happened to see that one of my photos had been viewed 690 times. What most surprised me was that it wasn’t what I considered to be among my top 10 photographs. I decided to do a Top 10 list just to understand what viewers were most attracted to, and it was something of a surprise. Here are the results in order from one to ten – well actually from 1 to 11. Tennessee Country Road, gets the spotlight with 692 views The following are picks 2 through 11 in order of views with No. 2 at 690 views and No. 11 at 168 views. I have to admit I added number 11 because I wanted to include Autumn Fire in the count down, but it really fell in just below with only 168 views. This is surprising because I consider it one of my better works. I am also a little biased because I invested a lot of time and work into this photograph whereas Dreamer’s Lane, which came in at second place, was a spur-of-the-moment shot that took less than 5 minutes to set up and capture. Of course, I’m not complaining. It’s just interesting to see that 10 photographs account for 25% of the 20,000+ views logged on my gallery. I’m trying to think of how this might be significant. I also noticed that Dreamer’s Lane has very few comments for such a high number of views. This could mean that it’s coming up on searches outside RB, (Non-members can view, but not comment on, artwork). It could also mean that viewers are attracted to it via the thumbnail but then are not impressed enough to leave a comment once they’ve seen the large image. (No, that can’t be it … right?). Anyway, I have never really paid attention to the views count before, but I think it’s worth keeping track of and investigating why some photos get above average views, i.e. have an above average attraction.

I have noticed over the weeks that there are some really excellent wildlife photos being posted on RB and many of these would make great ref material for my WWF work. I have mentioned this to some of you already and it appears that the general consensus is that you would be willing to let me use your work for ref purposes, in return for a small one off fee ( which I would pay you, not the WWF!) Rather than me telling this individually to every wildlife photographer on RB, it seems to me to make more sense for me to request photos of a specific subject, should I need them, as a Journal entry, and let people who have shots of the subject, to email them to me to assess, and if suitable, we can then negotiate via BM. A warning though: It would have to be the EXACT species, as many critters / ( especially birds, like the coots I posted recently) have a number of ‘sub-species’ which are all slightly different, so that means you have to be pretty clued up on exactly what it is you photographed. / I would have any photos I chose vetted by the WWF zoologist, and so you don’t need a degree in zoology yourself, but it would be helpful if you at least have a good knowledge of your subject to save wasting time.. Usually, the WWF provide excellent ref but sometimes even they have trouble finding enough and I don’t like to go trawling the Net for it because that raises all sorts of copyright infringement problems that I can do without! So if I we can help each other out on RB, I avoid all of that and some of you get to make a little money and have the satisfaction of knowing your work was an integral part of creating art for the WWF Stamp Collection. Please let me know if any of you are interested so I can at least set up a little ‘database’.

PATCHWORK HISTORY / / Patchwork Elephant I have a real fascination for/with stitchery and after getting a whole dose of it through a good friend, my work started to take on more of that stitched and bound look… as you see about in Patchwork Elephant but i’ve had the fetish for as long as i can remember…probably because my mum is a super sewer and the sound of the sewing machine or watching her thread a needle are impressed deep in my psych Patchwork Quilting goes back many years. Examples of quilting have been found in tombs of Pharohs dating back to 3400BC. Joseph’s coat of many colors was probably patchwork. Even armour was made by quilting heavy fabrics together. Quilted bed covers were recorded in household inventories from the 17th century. Patchwork quilting has even evolved into an art form known as art quilts. The Amish have developed the quilting traditions of other immigrants into America, into their own style. / excerpt taken from Ezine articles Thank you to the buyer of this tshirt this morning, I really appreciate it… ..... + HISTORY KRAFT BROWN PAPER+ / / Smile Baby – Retro Tee This tee (Smile Baby) is great for photographers and camera lovers of all ages, began as a marker pen drawing on a huge piece of Kraft Brown Paper torn from a large role I’d purchased for the purpose of wrapping and sending original artworks through the post (after they’d been appropriately packaged in bubblewrap then cardboard, but i found that i had excess brown paper, and one day, while waiting for my computer to wake up, got bored, grabbed the paper and started experimenting. I played around with the paint drips and making butterflies and crowns and dresses by folding the paper in half…..but eventually just started drawing quite quickly without much though, and began a whole range of new characters all drawn onto brown paper, I made them into a couple of calendars, and they are all available here on redbubble in card/print/calendar or many of them as tshirts also. Thank you to the buyer of Smile Baby – Retro Tee your purchase is greatly appreciated by the artist Here’s the Brown Paper Creations 2010 Calendar and you can see where the brown paper is left to show through, i’ve also used white gesso in large brush strokes across their faces and bodies and a combo of pastels and ink to achieve the outcome Here’s the Children of the World brown paper girl calendar for 2010 – all the images on the back are available separately also / Kraft paper is paper produced by the kraft process from wood pulp. It is strong and relatively coarse. Kraft paper is usually a brown colour but can be bleached to produce white paper. It is used for paper grocery bags, multiwall sacks, envelopes and other packaging / excerpt from* Wiki / The kraft process was developed by Carl F. Dahl in 1879, and a pulp mill using this technology started (in Sweden) in 1890.[2] The invention of the recovery boiler by G.H. Tomlinson in the early 1930s, was a milestone in the advancement of the kraft process.[3] It enabled the recovery and reuse of the inorganic pulping chemicals such that a kraft mill is a nearly closed-cycle with respect to inorganic chemicals, apart from those used in the bleaching process. For this reason, in the 1940s, the kraft process surpassed the sulfite process as the dominant method for producing wood pulp.[2] / excerpt from Wiki Last, but not least, here’s the Love is a Big Hug 2010 calendar, which has a selection of brown paper creations with a mix of other sweet loving artworks for girls of all ages

Thanks everyone for adding this to your favourites. Terry Hinkle is going to co-host the “Photo Realistic Artwork Group” with me and an application is pending with Red Bubble. Can’t wait to get this group started and showcase the amazing photo-realistic works on the bubble. I’ll keep everyone posted! / Jo Hi Bubblers! / I’m interested in starting a new group on the bubble to showcase PHOTO REALISTIC ARTWORK and am looking for a co-host. There are some mind-blowing pieces on Red Bubble that are so incredibly realistic that you have to actually double-check to make sure that they aren’t a photo! These are the types of works I’d love to showcase. I know how time consuming photo realistic work is and how much patience is required to pull it off so I think it would be great if there were a group to celebrate these efforts. The group would accept all traditional mediums and all real-life subjects (portraiture, landscapes, animals etc..). I haven’t been able to find a group like this on the bubble so if one exists, please let me know! If you are interested in co-hosting with me, please let me know. It’s something I’d really like to start up in the new year. / Jo
